Basing my pick on today's matches - Lindsay.
Basing my pick on R1-R3 - Lindsay.
Basing my pick on Summer 2004 - Lindsay.
Basing my pick on all 2004 - Lindsay.

So, I'll say Venus wins.

I want Venus to win, but I would not be surprised it Lindsay did.

BTW, if Venus wins, she gets to the final; if Lindsay does, Justine gets to the final.

I really truly want Venus to win, but I love Lindsay and want the best for her and would be happy if she won as well. I'm looking forward to this match---a rare occasion for me.

If they keep the level of tennis that they're playing at the moment, then Lindsay will win. If Venus steps it up she KNOWS how to beat Lindsay and really gave her a stiff challenge in the Stanford final which could have gone either way. If Venus picks it up and cleans up her forehand, then I can see Venus winning.

No.

The winner of this match goes on to face either Eleni Daniilidou or Asagoe (this was Myskina's quarter). I think either one of them can beat the both of them, but if Justine gets through to the semifinals, as I expect her to, I think Venus' chances are better at beating Justine than Lindsay as I believe Venus has a better GS SF record than Lindsay does (and a better record against Justine).

Lindsay had never beaten Venus for years before this summer but went on to beat her twice in two tournaments. I see no reason why the same shouldn't hold true in case of Venus v/s Justine :)

Davenport is playing really good so that would give her the edge. Venus knows she is the underdog and I think Venus will prevail. I know she played a ugly match against Rubin, but I saw some positives. Venus is building her confidence little by little and that's what she really needs now!

I like Lindsay's chances. She's on a roll winning twenty straight matches including one over V. Besides Venus made far too many errors tonight and Lindsay will make her pay by playing smarter and bigger than Chanda on the important points. I see a close match but Lindsay prevailing.

Maybe, but Justine said herself that she has trouble playing Venus because even when she is down, you cannot tell because of her poker face, similar to tonight.

True, Lindsay beat her twice, but she has not beaten her three times in a row in a long time. It could happen Monday, but you never know.

If the Venus of 2004 shows up, Lindsay will win easily.

If Venus the former World #1 shows up, she'll beat Lindsay easily, no matter the level of Lindsay's game.

With that said, Lindsay will probably win.

I think Davenport is playing really well, but my gut tells me Venus will win. She had a much tougher match tonight although the scores are almost the exact same. I keep waiting for Lindsay to have that one off match thats been bound to happen like it does to all players on a hot streak but she's played well so far. I think Venus will pick up her game and will win in 3 tough sets.

Does anybody know if it will be a night match or if we'll have to watch Danilidou/Asagoe on Ashe instead.:P

i don't know... This is gonna be a very tough game, I can feel it.
But my guts say that Lindsay is gonna win in a very tight three setter.
Anyhow, I'd like both of them to win , and both of them to lose since they'll both be threats to my favs Juju and Momo :p

Venus will do it this time. The way she played against Chanda proved it to me, contrary to general opinion.

- Davey won't attack the net the way Chanda did today.
- Davey doesn't have Chanda's speed, and, as a result, Venus won't have to go for the lines that often. She will play safer, hence fewer UE's.
- Venus knows Davey's game very well and will exploit her weaknesses. The reverse is true too, but history is on Venus's side.

This is such a crucial match because if Venus wins, it will jumpstart her career. If Davenport loses after such a great summer, it maybe permanently stall hers. I just hope Venus brings her A game. Then we'll know what will happen...

I voted for Venus. I hope she pulls something special out her hat because if she doesnt she's toast.

I take heart that she nearly beat Davenport in the third set tie break and was up five zero in the next match against her before it fell apart due to injury.

So lets go kick some but vee but the odds sure arent in her favor.

DEFY THE ODDS VENUS!

This is really too close to call. Based on recent form Davenport is obviously the favourite and Venus did not seem in top form against Rubin.

I think this could well come down to a few points either way. Whomever wins, I hope they go on to the final.

Funny how people say Venus has struggled this and that..what about Lindsay?! She hasn´t been exactly destroying her opponents either....couldn´t make a dent till 4-4 in her first match, went down a break in her second and nearly blew a 5-2 lead in the second, then had to face sp´s against Lina the other day...

For a player who has been soooooo dominating, she has known her troubles too.

Venus had Lindsay on the ropes at L.A...people forget that. I think if Venus can be confident, she CAN pull this off....this isn´t as case-closed as people seem to think.

Yeah, here we are: THE match of the US Open that cd be a final and which is only a 4th round...When I saw the draw, I was like "OMG, bad luck for Lindsay!!" .Of course, she's just beaten Vee twice in a row this summer , but this match as a 4th round , it's difficult for both of them , considering that other matches are , for instance Daniilidou-Asagoe, also in 4th Rd... But that's how it works in tennis, and surprises can always happen.
For this match, I 'll say that I would really like Lindsay to win coz she's an amazing player and I think she deserves to win this tournament before saying goodbye(much later I hope...) and as regards her results in 2004, I wd say she's the favourite, but I'm afraid of this match...
I say Linz in 3 and hope I will be right.
Good luck Lindsay, I'm with you!!! :bounce:

I really hope lindsay wins.....and i think she has the favourite edge (due to recent form), but you jest can never right Venus off she's such a dangerous player whatever stse off mind she is in. She will run down every ball we all know that, and i believe she will up her game tomorrow.

If lindsay serves well and her groundies stay strong.......but most off all she stays positive mentally.........linds should come through in 2 sets. If it goes to a 3rd i would be a bit worried that lindsay's negativity may creep in and could be curtains down for her!

its gonne be THE match of the tournament by far, and as many fans have said is highly unlucky for it to be a 4th round draw. However im hoping for good tennis tomorrow ngihtand hopefully thats what we get! Its only a tennis match and i think both players know that.......the world will keep turning no matter what happens!

Good luck to both players!

(but Linds you are my all time favourite and ill be rooting you on big time tomorrow night! Go Kick Butt dude!)

Yep I agree, I think possibly the main reason why Vee made so many errors against Chanda was because Chanda was constantly charging to the net, catching Venus off-guard.Don't see Lindsay adopting the same tactics as Chanda though.Anyway my gut feeling is telling me that Venus will win this match in straight sets. :) :bounce: :bounce:

Venus will win. When she gets to Flushing Meadows, she just hits another gear. She does what she has to do in order to win. A lot of the people who have previously posted have said some great things. Venus has been tested much more than Davenport has. But a few things stuck out. Venus has not lost to Davenport in a grand slam this millennium. Venus, the last time they played, was up 5-0 and her wrist injury sealed her fate. Another thing, Rubin was MUCH faster, last night, than Davenport will EVER be. Venus is building confidence and going for big shots. If Venus gets over 48% of her first serves in, she should win in straight sets. Yeah I said it, STRAIGHT SETS! If Venus struggles in the first set, I think she’ll pick it up and get it together in the second and win the next two. I honestly think that it will be a tight match from first ball to match point, but I think that Venus will win. I honestly do. When there is a full field, the woman with the best summer, doesn’t do so well at the US Open, and the woman with the not so great summer, usually wins (Look at Serena in ’02). The women’s game is all about who is the best…right at this second, and I think that Venus will win. Call it whatever you want but not only will she win, but she will make it to the finals and give Serena a run for her money, but Serena will win, and all will be alright in the world of the WTA.

GO VENUS!

Andrew.
Sep 5th, 2004, 08:23 PM
LA is really blown up. Lindsay had break point in each of Venus' service games up to 5-0, and then Lindsay started hitting many more winners and making much fewer errors once down 5-0. Venus' injury didn't even appear to be bothersome until around 5-3 or 5-4. Lindsay earned that victory.

...and by the way, Venus is the most dangerous, when she is underestimated!

Her dad did it in the spring of 2000, look what happened.
Everyone did it in the spring of 2004, and she went on a 17 match streak.

NEVER underestimate VENUS!

I know one thing, Lindsay's gonna come out attacking Vee's forehand, that's a given. Vee will counter by hitting down the line (as opposed to cross court) to get away from that strategy. Ought to be a fun match. I say Vee in three.

Heck no, If Venus brough her old game, it would be lights out for Davenport. Why? Because Venus's ability to hit on the run, that's why. Whatever, I don't care what anybody says, if a Williams Sister loses, 95% of it is because they hit unforced errors, not their opponents play.:wavey:

Venus is looking for revenge, I say she'll defeat Lindsay. Plus if her mental state of getting reinjured is out of the way this should be all Venus! It's in Venuss' hands just like Stanford.
