Maria can be very proud, too!
Beating 2 giants of modern tennis in the first two rounds like a drum & losing in a squeaker against one of the best ever who has at last matured fully!

OK, Austin, Graf, Seles, Hingis did cope slightly better with the pressure when 17 years old ...
But the game has "moved on" in the last 3 years. So much talent everywhere! And blond russians in short skirts galore!!

Me too! What an amazing match for Mary. Maria hit so many double faults - but only because of the pressure Mary was putting on her serve and her amazing returns.

I thought she had lost it when Maria saved break points to go 2-0 up, but Mary was so fired up for that match! :bounce:

Her reaction at the end was lovely - it meant so much to her and brought a tear to my eye too.

Fan-bloody-tastic

And to all you Maria haters out there, I was impressed with her fighting spirit and belief in herself. She reminds me of Serena a few years ago. I'm sure she'll be back winning again soon.

Pierce could've won this match without the shopping spree of UE's from Sharapova but in all fairness to Maria her head was clearly not into this tournament. Between the pressure of being the WTA's newest star and the murders of the Russian children she just wasn't in the frame of mind to really compete.

Mary played awesome, hitting with so much power and depth, and putting winners away at will! She hit even harder than Sharapova.

I cant stand how the commentators were always drooling over Masha, praising her whenever she hit a winner and ignoring whenever Mary did the same thing. They even had the nerve to say that Mary didnt outplay Maria but Maria selfdestructed
Kerryn Pratt is usually very reasonble too, except when she talks about her darling Masha. This is why people get sick of the media love affair with Masha.

Well played by Mary :yeah:.

After Sharapova took the first set I was worried it might all end very quickly.

After the first set i still thought Mary had a chance, bc Maria was playing awesome in that set, she played her best and couldnt play any better. Mary though, wasnt playing her best in that set, but it was still close. Once Mary cut down her UE's and lifted her serve % she steamrolled Maria in the next two sets.
