She is the best top 20 player to play both doubles and singels with a combined ranking of 13,
so she is the best top 20 player in both discipline followed by Paola Suarez (17).
And Sveta will try to qualify for YEC in both singles and doubles.
But ever since she grew out of AER, she has been playing a lot.

Sveta has gone 42-16 in singles, 40-10 in doubles, and that's over 100 matches this year.
Kim Clijsters reached #1 in both singles and doubles playing well over 100 matches in 2003,
and she has been out for 4 months this year, Sveta could be putting herself in danger of injuries.
Even though Sveta is top 10 in singles, top 5 in doubles justified, is doubles hindering her singles results?

Anastasia Myskina's record in 2004 is 43-13 in singles, 14-10 in doubles, with 80 matches played.
But her lack of doubles success has been overshadowed by her accomplishment in singles.

Many people have considered Svetlana to be even more talented than Maria, but has she played too many doubles preventing herself from making top 5 in singles and possibly winning a slam? 100 matches in a year really is a lot.

well she doesnt seem to get injured a lot but she is playing as much as Martina did so she better watch out. but players like Jelena Dokic play over 30 tournaments a year and still manage to stay healthy (physically) but Jelena doesnt play a lot of doubles so. and if Kim were playing right now, she would probably be the best top 20 player in both singles and doubles.

I cant believe she's number 4 in doubles, she dumped every volley into the net the other day in her 2nd round match, even the commentators were laughing. Mark Woodforde was saying how shocked his was with her volleying skills and how attrocious they were.

That's right, Justine even though is miles away from what Kim has accomplished in doubles, she IS considered to be the greatest Belgian player ever. And partly thanks to her concentration on the singles.

While Martina probably played close to 1000 matches in her career in singles and doubles by age 22 thus causing the burn-out. I dont see the point Sveta trying to do this well in doubles while failing in singles unable to accomplish what she is capable of.

if svetlana didnt play as much doubles as she does, theres no way in hell she'd be anywhere near as high ranked as she is.

Its BECAUSE of her doubles that she is ranked so high in singles, not the other way around

I agree with this poster. Martina N. has played some singles matches as a practise for doubles. In the same way Daniela can use doubles play as a practise for her singles. Besides if she does well in doubles this can give her more confidence in singles.

Definitely no. She should continue to play both in doubles and singles.
Playing doubles should not hurt her in the slightest.
Plus playing doubles brings her more money. The more money, the better of course!
Money rules the world!

Besides if she does well in doubles this can give her more confidence in singles. But for Svetlana, she has won 0 slams in single, and 0 slams in doubles......
Unlike Martina N who is content having won all 12 titles completing the 100K golden slam, Sveta needs to focus and not do too much like what she is doing now. Last year she was restricted to play less by AER, not this year.
Doing too much in singles and doubles will make her lose focus in one.
I believe she does have the confidence in both finishing high in both rankings, and she does have a T2 title to prove that. But like Kim, her doubles play could take energy off her and thus making her tank in her singles some times.
She is going to be the one with the most matches played this if she keeps this up , and that is not a good.
Hopefully she'll reach #1 in doubles soon, but that's a long shot if she doesnt win a slam.
Good luck Sveta, and win US Open for yourselfhttp://wtaworld.com/images/smilies/angel.gif.

I think she's doing good in singles and doubles. I don't think quitting doubles willl help her win slams.

I believe she should do whatever she feels helps her game the most...Perhaps doubles relaxes her...Plus, it's her priorities that matter...
