"I haven’t played her for a long time, but actually I prefer playing Serena than Venus because I think Venus’ backhand is better than Serena’s," Schnyder said. "So I try to play my game over her backhand. I hope that she’s not a hundred percent and just give it my best shot."

Haven't heard that in a few years....

Wow....when did she say that? in 00/01?......
Because Serena has outgrown Venus by miles, but Patty is pretty smart, I guess Venus is the one harder to beat.

Interesting.....might be some truth there..because Serena´s backhand is good, but Venus´s is KILLER. I hope she is not 100 %, huh Patty?!

Patty's lefty so she hits her forehand to players backhand, so of course she'd want to play Rena over Vee. Plus, she beat Serena once so she thinks she can do it again. :haha:

Stay away from the crack Patty.

(Maybe that's why her hair is so f*cked)

Is she kidding???? Serena has one of the best back hands in the game!!!!!! As of now, that is Serena's forte!

That's because Venus' backhand is better than Serena's ;). But that forehand is a different story...

Wow....that's interesting, I guess she is trying to psych Serena out;)....
Hopefully this will be brought up when Serena does her interview.

We´ll see....Serena first has to beat Tatiana. Then we will worry about Patty.

Patty knows what she's talking about. ;)
Plus she's beaten Serena before, so it figures that she would like playing her more. She thinks she has more of a chance!

H2H is 5-1 Serena. On a clay court Patty had the edge that day, but this is fast hardcourts. Serena in 2 sets.

So Patty is hoping that Serena's backhand is off so she can win. Someone needs to tell her to find a new strategy.:o

BTW, she is right Vee's backhand is more lethal than Serena's but at this point Vee is not doing everything else right in her game. I hope Vee picks it up.

in the match at Charleston '02 where Patty beat Serena, Serena made (not exaggerating) 20 backhand unforced errors in the deciding set. Patty just kept hitting to that side of Serena when she saw what was going on. Patty's just stating a basic truth about the sisters, that Venus has the better backhand and Serena has the better forehand.

If Serena is smart, she will be the one playing to Patty's backhand. If she does that, Patty goes out in straights, maybe with a bagel ;)

I think Patty is great, but many top players don't know how to match her well, while worse players than Patty actually have the need to think on court and dissect her game, so they can have a chance. That's why lesser ranked players beat her, and Patty beats a lot of top players. Top players are so used to playing their dominating game without having to adjust to their opponents' games, because they don't normally have to, that they can't think properly on court. Mauresmo is one of them. Patty builds her game around her forehand, and since she's left handed it can creat some havoc. She is the one picking her opponent's game apart, most of the times, but her own game can be countered with ease. Just play to her backhand :)

thanks

so true, Patty's own backhand is much weaker than her lefty forehand, and that's how the lower ranked players beat her, by simply being conscious of that, and playing a lot of balls to that side. It's funny but you're really right, the top players seem to be the only ones who haven't caught on.

I think she has beated Serena more than she has Venus..matter fact.... i dont know if she has ever beaten Venus....has she? Either way the cookie crumbles..if either one of them is 100% she is going to loose reguardless.

Why are you people so shocked about this? While Serena has had the better results the last couple of years, this year is arguable, I would say there are several players who would rather play Serena then Venus. Jennifer Capriati and Justine Henin Hardenne come to mind.

it's true but one thing that changes this a bit is that patty has really improved her slice backhand this year and i believe it is an effective tool to use against serena because she doesn't like changes in pace.

i wouldn't just say that it's players hitting her to backhand that allows lower players to win because patty can be horrible in every aspect of her game at times, and sometimes her backhand can actually be a very good shot and this is when she usually beats the top players.

the reality is that she hasn't had many bad losses on hardcourt this besides against ashley (and even that was close).

Yeah, just like Martina hingis and Lindsay Davenport would rather play Venus than Serena. It really doesnt say anything about how good the player is necessarily, just about how good their respective games match up.

patty's serve is a much more effective weapon these days as well and serena might have trouble returning her swinging out wide serves.

of course the reality is that a 100% serena on hardcourt is not going to be challenged by patty (or anyone for that matter), but playing at her level against golovin (which wasn't bad) patty has a chance to put herself in the match.

I didn't say her backhand was bad. I just said that if you play to her forehand, you're history. It may seem like you are actually dictating, but she can win the point with her forehand in a million different ways. You never know if she's going to moonball, just hit with topspin or blast a winner down the line. On the other hand, she uses her backhand mostly for changes in rythm.

When Patty gets on a roll in a tournament, she's very dangerous. That's because the deeper she gets into a tournament, the more top players she faces and there they go, underestimating Patty and playing their game without tactics.
Such examples include Zurich 2002, Charleston 2002, and maybe Zurich 2003. In 2003, she waxed Mauresmo 6-2 6-2 in one of the best matches I've ever seen from Patty, but also one of the dumbest matches I've ever seen from a top player like Mauresmo. And then next round, it was Patty's turn to get waxed, by someone who most people seem to believe has no tactics whatsoever, but whom I saw dismantle Patty's game: Jelena Dokic. Dokic came out with a strategy to shut Patty down by not letting her play more than one forehand during a point, as she directed her game at Patty's backhand. And since Patty's BH is not a weapon, Dokic dominated the match from the start. Patty was clueless and lost 6-0 6-3
