It doesn't matter to her. She just wants to play, and with Ollie
starting at 11am I think Armstrong is used for the benefit for
Belgium tv coverage. With the timezones, USA night matches
become midnight tv matches for Europe. They prefer the
day session viewing.

I can't believe they put Justine on Armstrong and Sharapova on Ashe, I would say that's pretty disrespectful.

Yes. They could have put Justine between Federer and Agassi.

I would say, however, that Sharapova vs. Pierce on center court is justifiable. It's not only about Sharapova but also Pierce, a two-time slam winner who has just beat Venus at the Olympics.

in 2002, they have ladies night on Saturday as well. At that time it was Hingis vs coetzer, Capriati vs Shaunessy and then they have Anna/Martina in doubles.

I am not surprised they did it again this time. We have three very strong women match which is primetime material, should be a cracker

It shows that CBS don't care about Davenport and Venus...

The Saturday night session has always been shitty, it's usually the 2 matches CBS don't want to show. Honestly a night session with 2 womens match kinda sucks, it's like a night session with only a mens match.

Actually I think they're just trying to make as much money as possible... They know the night matches get the most people and if it's lead by great players it will definitely be sold out!!!

No, CBS decides which matches they want to show during the afternoon... And the 2 less interesting matches for them in term of ratings get the night session.

They have Henin, Sharapova, Agassi and Federer in the day session... If CBS would consider Venus or Davenport as more popular than any of those 4 players, they would have been in the day session.

Davenport, Venus to play under the lights Saturday at U.S. Open

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - Saturday's schedule at the U.S. Open might as well be called "Ladies' Night."
No. 5 seed Lindsay Davenport and No. 11 Venus Williams both take the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium under the lights as third-round play continues at the National Tennis Center.

The first night session that featured a pair of women's matches took place on August 31, 2002. Traditionally, night sessions include one women's match followed by a men's match, but the popularity of players such as Davenport and Williams has helped make this change possible.

Davenport takes a 19-match winning streak into her meeting with No. 26 seed Elena Bovina of Russia. Williams will follow against fellow American Chanda Rubin, who is seeded 20th. Williams is 8-1 lifetime against Rubin.

Top seed Justine Henin-Hardenne, the defending champion, meets American Lisa Raymond. Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, the seventh seed, takes on two-time Grand Slam champion Mary Pierce of France.

Sharapova, the 17-year-old Russian who has become a fan favorite, has been pushed to three sets in each of the first two rounds. Pierce, who has never faced Sharapova, has looked sharp in dropping only four games through two matches.

Andre Agassi received a break on Thursday when second-round opponent Florian Mayer of Germany retired in the fourth set. The 34-year-old Agassi takes on No. 25 seed Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic to try to cement his 14th career fourth-round appearance at the U.S. Open.

Top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland has had two days off for his third-round encounter with No. 31 Fabrice Santoro of France. Federer, the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, has dropped just one set in the first two rounds.

No. 3 seed Carlos Moya of Spain and No. 5 Tim Henman of Britain also are in action against unseeded opponents. Moya has beaten a pair of wild cards to advance to a matchup with Belgium's Olivier Rochus while Henman meets qualifier Michal Tabara of the Czech Republic.

How so?

The only reason there's 2 women matches instead of 1 is because CBS wanted both Agassi and Federer during the day...

If CBS would consider Venus or Davenport more popular (ratings) than Fed or Agassi, Fed would have played the night session and Venus or Davenport would be in the day session.

It's the same thing every year. Believe what you want to believe.

In case you have not looked at the calendar, they USO isn't concerned about the ratings this weekend because it is Labor Day weekend. Many people are travelling and not watching TV, but those visiting NY may stop over at the USO in Queens and because Lindsay and Venus are popluar, they decided to put then on the night card to generate better attendance, which they will get.

Next week it is about ratings.

"they USO isn't concerned about the ratings"

CBS isn't concerned about the ratings? That has to be the funniest thing I've ever read...

The USA Networks don't have a word to say about the schedule, but CBS does... It's common knowledge. The 3 days there is a CBS coverage for the first 11 days (Saturday, Sunday and Monday), all the best matches are during the day. That's why Agassi NEVER play at night for his third round match and fourth round match.

Again, I was at laides' night two years ago, and the stadum was not only packed, USA got some of its best ratings of the tournament because they put POPULAR payers on the bill.

You can try to convince yourself of Venus and Lindsay are not god enough tio put on the day session today, so if they both win, I guess they will play on Monday night since CBS will not want to see them during the day, which is fine with me because I may not be home.

Did I say that Venus and Lindsay are not good enough to put on the day session? Maybe you need to learn how to read. I'm simply saying there are other matches CBS consider they'll get better ratings (Agassi, Sharapova and Federer).

I've never said CBS don't want to show them.

Besides, Davenport vs Venus IS the match of the tournement. Of course it's gonna be during the day Monday. It's gonna be the second match of the day, right before Agassi.

I was always under the impression that the most popular players (and those who will get the highest ratings tv wise) are always on the night session. Hence Agassi plays a lot at night, Roddick has played 2 of his 3 matches on the night sessions, as has Serena. I thought getting the night match was a big deal in the US

Actually, Serena vs. Capriati is THE match of the tournament; that is what many people are talking about since most believe Venus willl be beaten by Lindsay.

You implied that they are not good enough or popular enough to be on the day session schedule.

Yes they do, EXCEPT FOR THE THREE DAYS CBS COVER THE TOURNEMENT.

You won't see Agassi getting a night match today or in 2 days, just like Davenport vs Venus won't be the night match in 2 days.

CBS is not the only one deciding the scheduling, they have heavy influence, but in the endputting two ladies match is not becuase they find them unmarketable, it is exactly the opposite.

CBS do not have a choice on who they can show all the time, if that is the case, they will probably put Francesca Schivaone and Ai Sugiyama on night matches!!!
