Who's the next #1.. Or will Lindsay hold it so long that's a stupid question? <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

Note on Jenn: She does have to defend OZ, but her closest competitors have points to defend there as well. Jenn only won one other tournament before RG. If she can make the semi at OZ and win a couple Tier I's, she defends the points even if she doesn't win OZ.

If Jen plays Sydney, she will take the number 1 from Davenport, because she only defends 2rd points, and she will lose it again after the Australian Open.

If Jen doesn't play Sydney, she won't recapture the number 1 in a while...and Hingis has lots of points to defend in January, so she will fall in the rankings...my bet is Venus.

Venus seems the obvious and most reasonable choice - but then again she was that at this time last year, so ...

JenCap may transiently be no.1 after Sydney even if she doesn't play, as Lindsay is defending a final appearance there.

It is almost a mathematical certainty that Capriati will be #1 at AO week, so the poll is meaningless. If you want it for real, ask at least "after AO"..

I'm with ys i think a better title would be who will be number #1 after the OZ Open.

Gandalf is right. Jen will be no. 1 cos of the few points she has to defend at Sydney. After that, who knows?

I hate to seem faithless, but I'm not that invested in the title of the thread. Okay.

Who's going to be the first new player to #1 AFTER OZ 2002?

either way, depending on how certain people do at the australian and barring a strong pperformance by venus(which everyone knows she can do),i think venus could be #1 before the end of the month.

Mathematically only one of the top 3 can be #1 after AO 2002 ... Hingis at #4 has a final to defend so she will gain points only if she wins it (don't make me laugh!!!!) but even so it won't be enough because she will fall in the ranking points after Sydney! Capriati could be a serious contender depending on how she does at Sydney (she will regain the #1 spot there though!) but I don't think she will defend her title and my guess is that she will lose ranking points after the AO. Davenport and Venus reached the SF last year at The AO so they will have the same points to defend. Davenport has a final to defend at Sydney though while Venus has some few points to gain at Gold Coast. My bet is that Venus will win or will make at least the final at the Gold Coast and Davenport will reach the final at Sydney but will lose to Serena. Venus will be then much closer to the #1 spot before the AO. If Davenport loses before the SF, I'd say that Venus has a good shot at #1 after AO! But if Davenport makes it to the final, I'd say that she will regain #1 spot after AO.

My guess is Venus #1 after AO because she will win her third GS in a row!!!! Davenport #2, Capriati #3, Serena #4, Kim #5 and Hingis #6!!!! <br /> <img src="graemlins/bounce.gif" border="0" alt="[Bounce]" /> <img src="graemlins/bounce.gif" border="0" alt="[Bounce]" /> <img src="graemlins/bounce.gif" border="0" alt="[Bounce]" /> <img src="graemlins/bounce.gif" border="0" alt="[Bounce]" /> <img src="graemlins/bounce.gif" border="0" alt="[Bounce]" />
