I think Angela was too cocky in proclaiming that she would be disappointed in anything less than a quarterfinal!  :tape:

She should be careful not to think that "knowing Serena and Venus" means that she is one of them or getting too cocky. Other than that, i really like Angela and it's a bummer but Fran must have been fired up because she has qf points to defend.

Francesca seems to be playing well.
But of course she will choke against Amelie. The first set will be close but then she will go down badly without a fight. :)

How is Angela saying that she would be dissapointed if she did not make the qtrs being cocky?

WTH does this have to do with her knowing Serena and Venus? So, she is cocky for believing in her game? Angela did not even say anything cocky like that Sesil and the majority of you guys were praising her when the young lad has not even made it out of pampers.

well, it is cocky 100%. it probably fired Schiavone up who is already beyond feisty and is RANKED HIGHER!!! HELLOOOOOOOO!

I just worry that trying to associate her with the Williams and this "straight outta compton" BS and making quotes like that just puts her under immensely more pressure.

As far as Sesil is concerned, she was womanhandled by Kuzy and is young and has much to learn and I don't even care 2 cents about her skinny butt. LOL:p

Sesil was pretty damn close to beating Maria and she just turned 15 - no need to insult her.

obviously you don't see how the media buzz around her is so strongly related to her ties to the Williams. Her career pales in comparison.

I wish her the best though cuz Angela seems much more likeable to me than a lot of struggling/but improving journeywoman players.

Sorry treufreund you really make no sense. I have heard MANY players say they would be dissapointed if they did not get to a certain point in a tournament, and noone said they were cocky.

Angela is straight out of compton and it's not BS. What is wrong with her saying where she is from? Every other girl on tour is willing and ready to holler about where they are from, what's the problem?

Have you heard Sesil's comments and rude behaviour? Some folks act like that's ok, but then call Angela cocky for saying she would be dissapointed if she did not make the qtrs. Give me a frigging break!!

yes it makes sense when you have never been that far and don't have the record to back it up. i am just saying that playing it low key would put less pressure on herself. had Jennifer Capriati or Serena Williams said that anything less than a qf showing would be disappointing, then nobody would raise an eyebrow because they are multiple grand slam winners and former #1's.

and there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with Angela being 100% proud of her roots. I was criticizing the media who tries to play that up and INFER that she is destined for something special because of her ties to Serena and Venus. They don't come out and say that but it's a clever form of marketing. Obviously ever girl comes from somewhere and you don't hear about it in this vein.

lastly, I am aware that we may not be able to see eye to eye on this but i can see where you are coming from and don't want to seem like i am against Angela. I just think playing things a little cooler is wise and her loss today, while not proving my point at all, at the very least bolsters it.

I had the pleasure of talking to Sesil in Vancouver, and she is not one bit rude or cocky.

If she didn't say she wanted to win or get to the next round why show up? IMO in any sport if you aren't there to progress or succeed you might as well stay at home, this isn't a cocky attitude it is a competitive attitude. This attitude separates the really good players from the great ones.

Angie has every right to proclaim her confidence in herself. sorry that she isn't meek and humble enuf for some of y'all but it is this same cockiness that will take her places. and if she finds herself inspired by the success of two older African-American players, that's all good too as far as i am concerned. it would be nice to see more folks complimenting her run than trying already to tear her down.

go Angie!!!! :bounce: hope you learned from this experience and have much better success at your next tourny.

Good win by schiavone....nice between the legs shot. Angela needs to work on her serve and on movement....she can´t defend all too well.

Funny how whenever a black person states a goal he/she has it´s called: cockiness.

And harloo is right: when was the outcry when sesil proclaimed she was gonna wipe the floor with Maria at Nasdaq?!

Harloo,
You can't take anything these SIMPLE IDIOTS say on here with any substance. Whenever someone Openly states their personal goals they've set...they're cocky. I saw no such evidence of that, i did see confidence. It's like me saying, anything less than an "A" on my exam would be dissappointing...am I cocky for expecting more or the best out of myself?
Don't listen to these UNDER 21 year olds....with no "Formidable Education" LMAO.

Good Tournament Angela...ALWAYS expect the best from yourself...!!

Too bad Angela didn't win the tie break but it was a very good tournament for her anyway hopefully she can build on this. I don't see anything wrong with what Angela said what is shooting low going to get her?? good for her for believing in herself and her game if she doesn't nobody else will do it .

Great win by Francesca. She has trouble with power players and countered it by playing like one for the first set. We had the characteristic relaxation in the second set followed by the poor service game that allows the opponent in but then she came out fighting. The crowd loved the match, the between the legs shot is one to show the kids. New more aggressive all court volleying Fran will take some beating if she shows in the 4R.

Now she has Momo who wasn't playing as well as Haynes when I watched her and Fran has beaten her this year and Fran will want to defend her QF points.... could be interesting. Go Fran....

Well done Franny and great tournament Angela :D :yeah:

I actually think Francesca has a chance against Amelie for several reasons. She's playing well, she's already beaten Momo this year, and Amelie is not in her best form (although today was an improvement). The opportunity to play on Arthur Ashe today will also help. :)

I don't think what Angela said was cocky..however it did make me laugh out loud :p

Goals are great all and but I'm sure she was well aware that in order to get to the quarters she would've had to go thru Schiavone and Mauresmo.

Her ambitious attitude might be helpful in the future though.

Anyway, go Momo. Give Francesca another good whipping like last time.

treufreund, comprehension skills from some people are clearly lacking. They don't get it. I went through this in another thread. People don't or can't read. I don't think they read enough of the other threads either because Sesil was absolutely taken to the cleaners when she made her comments about beating Sharapova. About this thread, I see their point and I see your point. You explained yourself well. If people see something in your words and feel victimized, then that's their problem, not yours. They've had their say and you've had yours.

I didn't read anything cocky about Angela's comments either, but I do think that publicly stating her goals put more pressure on herself than duly necessary. But she's probably not as media savvy as most of the top players because it's not like she has to deal with them on a regular basis.

Great match, especially the second set, and Francesca's 'through the legs' shot, hysterical!! I've really enjoyed watching Angela this week, saw her beat Maggie; and hope to see her more in the future :D . Just wondering why she hasn't had any USTA funding (according to the commentators her Dad's had to pay for all her coaching); she looks pretty talented to me....

Cocky or not, I enjoyed watching this match and although I would have preferred Angela (in the underdog position) to win it, Schiavone deserved it, that shot between her legs was awesome !

I just wish that people wouldn't entangle in endless discussions wether a player is cocky or not instead of talking about the on-court action.

And why should the Williams sisters be dragged into every discussion ? I thought this thread was about the Schiavone - Haynes match and not about the sisters...

Fantastic is correct. Angie is just not media savvy and was ill-prepared in dealing with reporters because she's never really had to. I can't fault her for being over-enthused because this is all is so new to her. She'll learn from this whole experience as much other players have when they made their first breakthrough of sorts at the Grand Slams.

Congratulations and good luck to Schiavone.
