That pathetic forehand into the net at 6-5 Hantuchova.:tears: I was really pulling for her, wanted to see her get this win and really start her comeback trail to the top of women's tennis. Nice fight from Patty, but Daniela needs to get more firm in the big occasions, those looks she gave to her people in the stands was reminicent of Daniela of 2003 when she was about to burst into tears.:o Still a good tournament for Dani though, I hope she continues to improve.:)

My heart was beating so fast during that tiebreak..so intense and seeing Dani SOO distressed..

RELAX DANI! I know how important this is but you HAVE to be calm and composed..

Dani has done one thing right this year and hopefully it will be a big step coming for next year..she STILL needs to work on that mentality..

BTW nice win from Patty who has SO much talent..hope she gives Serena a good fight!

One of the better matches of the tournament so far, ok the second set was shit (Dani was missing loads, and Patty went into moon ball mode)...but the rest of the match was excellent, the game Schyder broke in the first set lasted 25 minutes  and Schnyder was very good when match point down playing cooly, and aggresivly. Heartbreaker for Dani, but at least shes putting herself in good positions now rather then just losing badly.

at the same time i'm upset for dani - all the signs are there that her game is back but she can't let this get her down. i wished she didn't lose so many matchpoints but at least it means she came as close as possible to winning

Patty was always very good when she was aggressive. She just went into La La land node and threw in two bad service games to make it a three setter. On the points that mattered she broke back or won. Dani can take a lot away too she came back several times and dominated at times - she just couldn't serve it out or match Patty the attacker.

patty!! i can't believe i am reading so many people say she fought for something. what a great sign. this tournament really changes her feel of her whole because she produced results throughout now. of course this tournament isn't over but it looks very good for her the indoor season because it has become her best surface.

Its deceptive - the commentators were saying how placid patty looked most of the time (poker faced) and she could have been thiking of her holidays at times for all she showed and they compared her to Dani who was very demonstrative and shed the odd tear. Patty not showing it though doesn't mean she isn't feeling it. Patty kept on coming back though and the clenched fist appeared when she broke to stay out there and saved match points. She was very up and went into zone when she needed too - you just wish she could have done it in two by not throwing in the two bad service games.Patty falls to her knees at the end looking very happy. There is also a lovely shot near the end of the long 25 minute first set game when Patty looks as if she is having difficulty not laughing as Dani failed to convert yet another game point. She then closes the game out by grabbing the last two poinrs.

Dani stopped going for her shots in the TB, she really played into the hands of Patty who was moonballing her. And she puts so much pressure on herself that when she loses a single point, it's like the end of the world and that affects her concentration.

Too bad cause this win would have benefited her way more than Patty.

Daniela looked bad at the end, she had three match points but didn't come close to winning any of them. She wanted to Patty to give her the match, but Patty held firm and refused to give it away. Patty always has nerves of ICE against Dani, she keeps such an emotionless face, it looks like there is just nothing inside her at all. It's weird but as soon as i saw the score of Dani saving match points to beat Pin in the first round, it came into my head that Dani would beat Molik and then Patty would get to the fourth round, bcuz she always beats Dani.

JR who is Patty's new hitting partner, do tell - i think you are onto something there, Patty seems to have somewhat better results when she leaves Hubby Hofmann at home in Zurich to feed the cats.

It's a good win for Patty obviously, but we have to remember that it's "only" Hantuchova she beat, and Dani is far from a feared player on the tour these days. It's a big win not because of who Patty beat, but because of where she did it. I wouldn't say beating Dani yet again (she's done it five straight times now) necessarily means Patty has "turned the corner" for the future. She will have to play a lot better than she did today, if she is going to challenge Serena. But i'm certainly not counting Patty out of it.

:hug: I'm serious though. Every time Patty clocked one of those loopy forehands it's like time standing still. And then she looped one right on the line (matchpoint down too i think  ). As for my Venus love, I'm passed the point of putting high hopes one certain players to do well. it's only Patty's 2nd ever USOpen 4th round appearance (the other one was in '98, when she beat Graf in the night match on the middle Sunday of the tournie.)

so you admit you didn't see the match on the one hand but then make the assessment that beating a former top 5 player on her way back means she can't give "Serena a run for her money"?

switzy i think you are over-valuing Hantuchova a bit. She bears no resemblance whatsoever to a Top 5 player - maybe she's "on her way back" to the Top 20, but not to the Top 5. Patty isn't playing her best tennis right now (except for AO and Charleston, she hasn't done so all year), but then neither is Serena, she is slower and less deadly than she was at her peak. So i think that for this reason Patty has a chance.

vogy to me hantuchova resembled the player she once was against molik (not fully but to a certain extant). i know patty isn't player her best but that really means very little because patty basically never plays at the same standard from match to match and usually lifts in these types of situations. i find it hard to see her beating serena but as i have said i'm just excited she's their because patty is the queen of achieving the unexpected - in terms of both beating top players and losing to not so great ones as well.

there's no other player outside the very top of the game who has demolished the top players in sets or matches like patty has - beating mauresmo 6-2, 6-2; myksina 6-1, 6-1; dementieva 6-3, 6-1; winning sets off henin on clay 6-1 and 6-2; beating world no.1 capriati in straight sets; graf in straight sets etc etc. she almost always does this to players when they are at their highest ranks as well.

for so long she pissed me off with her inconsistancy but i have come to love it these days because every week you know this could be the one where she makes everyone sit up. i can't support the top players - i find supporting dominating sports people/teams boring. i mean my favourites are patty, chanda, myriam, babsi, dani, mary. need i say more?

I think that lob in the tie-break by Patty was the blow for Dani...after that her spirit went waaaaayyyyyy down.ITA. She was completely crushed after that moment. I felt so bad for her, she is still so emotionally fragile :sad; but she has a hell of a lot of positives to take from this match on the road back to the top.

But, I was rooting for Patty and she showed such spirit to hang in there after being 5-2 down in the TB!

honestly switzy no offense but i don't care much for any of your other faves (except maybe Casanova who is growing on me). Patty is different because she is BETTER than those other players you named. I hate seeing Patty grouped in a category with Rubin, Schett, and Dani, because for me Patty is just better than they are, she is mentally tougher and she has more game. It's a big tragedy that Patty hasn't really shown that except at two or three tournies in her career. I tend to see Patty as more similar to MY other faves, Dementieva, Petrova, Shenay Perry etc, rather than yours. Patty could actually be a top player herself, instead of a second tier dark horse. On the other hand it would have been an even bigger tragedy if Patty had quit the game 5 years ago and not been playing at all, so i guess we have to take what we can get.

honestly switzy no offense but i don't care much for any of your other faves (except maybe Casanova who is growing on me). Patty is different because she is BETTER than those other players you named. i was talking about frustration they cause me from having ability but getting injuries in the way etc. i don't know why you go on about patty being mentally tough - she have been in this match but it's purely her mental weakness that has prevented her rise to the top. she normally is pretty good at showing her frustration on court as well.

no offense as well but i don't care for any of your faves either - i think petrova and dementeiva are two of the most boring players i have ever seen.
