OK there's already a thread like this but no poll. Here's the poll!

My bet is that Maria picks up her game a lot. I'm hedging two bets:

Normal amount of UE's: Maria wins 26 75 64
Low amount of UE's: Maria wins 64 62

Many people are giving Sharapova no chance. I am.

Very Very Close match but I think Sharapova will get her....she fights harder than Mary.

If Maria picks it up, she wins....at this stage of their career she is better than Mary..but if Maria comes out and decides this is a walk in the park, she could be in for a rude awakening.

I really think Maria will win this easily, but then again, the last time i thought one of Mary Pierce's opponents would beat her easily(Venus) she lost, so who knows.

Interesting that more people thought that Jankovic would beat Sharapova, but now more people think Sharapova will beat Pierce...

I picked Mary in two.... based on Maria's first two rounds... but who knows like someone said she could pick it up right now and win. I like both players! :wavey: Good luck ladies!!!

Pierce has been steamrollering her opposition up to now. If Maria can find a way of countering Pierce's power, and not get overwhelmed by it, then she has got the qualities to win.

I think hardcourt experience and power are on Mary's side. If she comes out of the block serving well (high first serve %) and clocking those returns, Sharapova has no chance as she'll be on her heels from the get-go. Plus, Maria's game seems like it would fit right into Mary's strike zone. I wonder if there's anyone left at Bollettieri who remembers how to coach a player on how to beat Mary Pierce...

If Mary plays well and keeps her UE's down, then she will win.

If Sharapova plays well, then Pierce has no chance at all, but that is a big IF.

Hmm...Maria could be the perfect opponent for Mary if Mary zones....bam, bam,bam but not much defence. Hmm, we all KNOW what Mary can do if she zones.....Maria better be on her toes.

I dont think she'll win that easily!

IF she does win, I'm certain it will be in three sets.

But Maria will win anyway so... ^_^

I think Mary will win, but I want Maria to win so that Justine can bitch slap her in the QF

Justine hasn't been the best this week... If Sharapova beats Pierce and is on top of her game vs JHH, she'll give her a hard time.

Mary will be a REAL test for Sharapova. She has more weapons than Sharapova's past opponents and won't choke or be intimidated by Sharapova. If Mary and Sharapova continue the same level of play then Mary will win.

Go Mary!!! :D

It's possibly a good thing that no-one is giving Sharapova a chance. She's sort of the underdog ATM.

Plus, if she squares off against JHH in the 4th round, and loses, well... it's no disgrace losing to the world #1.

Anyway, she only had 2r points to defend here so she'll move forward regardless. Others around her have much more to lose.

This is going to be a big test for Maria, if she doesn't raise her game she will lose  Mary has been playing amazing so far

Absolutely. I am probably one of the few Maria fans who wouldn't be too disappointed if she lost her match today. She has defended last years points and progressed further. That is good enough for me. As long as she continues to advance progressively further at this tournament in the next few years, that will signify progress is being made.

She has made progress this year, and I'm sure she will continue to make progress next year and the year beyond.

But this US Open is not over for Maria yet. She ahs a good chance of defeating Pierce, if she approaches the match in the correct way.

Good Luck Maria! :yeah:

As I said, Mary likes to steamroller opponents by dominating the play. Someone who stands up to her and moves her out of her comfort zone can start doing a lot of damage.

Go Maria! You are the one to do it.

Bookies base their odds on all the factors - otherwise they're out of business very fast.

I desperately want Mary to win but I think its going to be a lot closer than some people are suggesting. In Sharapova's first round match she was in trouble because Hopkins just got everything back - and Maria started making mistakes. Mary won't be able to run down as many balls as Sharapova's other opponents to date, but on the other hand, Mary has more weapons than those players do.

I can see a very close match but I think Mary needs to win the first set to stand a realistic chance.

I also think Mary will be able to pull an upset. Saw her in Athens, if she cuts down the UEs, I'll see her winning in two sets. If she kept the UEs, well, who else can win then?

Hopkins? You mean Granville?...

If Sharapova can get Mary moving heaps... run her from side to side... i think she can sneak through... obviously to 73% of voters on the poll's dismay!

The match is in Maria's hands as she is the better and more talented player. If she makes 50 unforced errors then its gonna be hard for her. If she plays reasonably well she will win easily.

anyway ... Mary is going to win this one in ... let me think - 2 straight sets 6:3 6:2

Talk about some serious power hitting tennis. Both these girls hit hard and harder. Depends on who is "on". If Mary starts out well, I can see her winning this in straight sets....one easy set and one 7-6 or 7-5 set. If it goes to three, I think Maria will have the advantage. It depends on who is moving forward and finishing points off at the net. They both can do it, but who can get the jump? I also think Mary's backhand DTL could be a big factor.

Of course if Mary comes out and is hitting forehands that hit the backstop and endanger linespeople, it could be ugly and over very fast. That's Meryl for ya :)

I thought Mary would have to do it quick in two sets, but she surprised me and won it in three. Great match from Mary. Work on those DFs, Maria!
