Venus victory puts four black women into third round for first time By HAL BOCK, AP Sports Writer
September 2, 2004 NEW YORK (AP) -- Venus Williams (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/87/)' victory Thursday night made for history at the U.S. Open. For the first time at the tournament, four black women advanced to the third round.

Williams joined her sister, Serena, along with Chanda Rubin (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/90/) and Angela Haynes (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/784/) in advancing.

``The best thing is that we're all American, and this tournament represents America,'' Venus said.

At 19, Haynes entered as a wild card. She grew up in Compton, Calif., as did the Williams sisters.

``They're doing a good job with the young players,'' Venus said.

All four players will not reach the fourth round. Venus Williams and Rubin face each other in their next match.

On Friday, Haynes plays Francesca Schiavone (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/150/) while Serena Williams (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/134/) takes on Tatiana Golovin (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/565/).

That's excellent news, Althea Gibson would be so proud that more African Americans and other people of color are getting involved in tennis
