I only watched the second and third set so I can't judge the first...

The second set was horrible to watch at times...Horrible serves, horrible UE's, everything was horrible from both players...
At times both players were playing pretty good but it usually would last only a couple of points...

In the third set Maria somehow managed to put herself together a bit while Jankovic seemed to have lost her mind completely at that point...She took an injury break which Masha used to practice her serve and some other points which turned out well since she played better after that break...

Jankovic didn't look like she was injured but Maria just improved her game a lot in the third...She still hit too many UE's but at least she covered that with good play...

In the end Jankovic didn't have any chance and Maria won the match relatively easy...

If Maria plays like this against Pierce though, I'm afraid she'll be slaughtered...

Maybe she was just very nervous, but she was not her real self in any case...She was way too tensed...

*why am i even trying...* *here we go again*

Why is Maria a cheat?

And can't you call somebody a one slam wonder untill AFTER their carreer. Plus, she isn't even OUT of the open yet...

And maybe Maria was playing bad...But Jankovic was even worse at times...

Not a pretty 2nd set for Maria but credit to Jankovic, she really put the pressure on.

Slaughtered? I doubt it. If she p;ays like this she may get beat by Pierce, true. However, slaughtered is not the word that comes to my mind. To be honest,I'm expecting Sharapova to beat Mary Pierce IF that is who she has to play.

I will say that unforced errors are a big problem that Sharapova has. Without those, who knows how much her game would improve?

Eurosport only showed the 2nd and 3rd sets. The 2nd nearly gave me heart failure. She seems to be having 2nd set lapses here.

The 3rd was good. (Despite Jelena's so-called "injury" break as soon as she went down 3-0). So if you ignore the middle set, Maria was playing excellent... ;)

Unfortunately Pierce seems to be having her once every two years power surge, and is playing like the Terminator on steroids at the moment, so Maria will need everything to stop her.

Good Luck Maria.

mary is back in form carrying her great olympic form over to the US Open. i just hope she doesn't run out of gas because the form she is showing so far would be challenge maria significantly at her best let alone how she has played thus far. that's not a swipe at maria - it's just that i've seen mary's two matches so far and she really is playing like the slam winning pierce - who in my opinion had one of the best games ever seen.

I have to say it was a pretty strange match..breaks everywhere.. Jankovic's serve was not good at all... Sharapova looks really shaky.. I think she'll lose to Pierce, unless she keeps her level of play consistent

oh well atleast jelena got a set :) im sure she will be p[leased wih that aspect f the match! she was playing the wimbeldon champ so i dont think getting a bagel and breadstick is too shameful.

maria better pick it up against mary...it seems as marias form gets better in the latter rounds and the reverse is true for mary so well see

Yay Maria! She only had R2 points to defend here so she'll move forward.

Still too many UE's, but less than her first match. Let's see them go down even more next time.

actually, she constantly touched her hip (or thereabouts), something seemed to bother her.

Jelena Jankovic is a good player, but yesterday she didn't play well at all. Maria shouldn't have lost a 2nd set. ;)
Ok, Masha in the 3rd against Pierce, gonna be interesting! :)

She was touching the hip all the time in 2nd set. But anyway i don't call tennis, what Maria plays, it's just plain aggressive, nervous behaviour on court. She has agood body, but her face is really ugly, Kirilenko is a babe compared to Sharapova. Way to agressive for a tennis player, maybe she should have some hyper activity off court, so she could control the one on court. And Jelena was just too passive, and that serve, well maybe only Dementieva can call it serve

Slaughtered is exaggerated, I admit...

But Pierce seemed pretty impressive to me, and if Maria plays like she played the second set against Jankovic...She has no chance...
