View Full Version : Why didn't the USA Network cover 1 point of Chakvetadze's historic upset of Myskina?

I still can't believe the USA Network didn't show 1 point of this match live when they had ample opportunities to do so. Do we really need to see Nick's Pick's and Andre Agassi's 10 minute warmup when one of the biggest upsets in grand slam history is taking place with Anna Chakvetadze ranked #175 upset 4 ranked Anastasia Myskina in straight sets? This was bush league coverage at it's worst from the USA Newtwork. :fiery: I'm not asking to see a half hour of this match although that would have been nice. But they certainly could have spared 5 or ten minutes to cover this match. But maybe since Tracy Austin doesn't know who Anna Chakvetadze is or how to pronounce her name they didn't want to embarrass her by covering the match. And then after the match and not showing the second set scores Al Trautwig says they have the first major upset of the U.S. Open. I think I'm going to see highlights of the upset but instead the USA Newtwork only showes us match point! :fiery:

Someone sounds bitter here! :p

Seriously...This is not the first time I heard US coverage sucks...I hear Americans complain about it all the time...I guess they just don't care about non-Americans or something like that...I'm sure that if Anna was American they would have showed the entire match...

But I also think that has something to do with the viewers...I can't believe they wouldn't show the non-Americans more often if that would get them more viewers...The true tennis fans, of whom we got so many here, may want to see matches like this...But I think the majority of the people over there just rather watches Agassi's warmup and Nick's Picks than "just" two Russians...It's a matter of supply and demand...

This is just my opinion of course...I'm not American and I don't live in America so I'm purely speculating right now...

We got the Nastya game on Eurosport. Made a nice change from court 11. American's would also complain if they didn't get the Arthur Ashe court. I'm sure you'd prefer to watch Juju and Venus. You'll probably get highlights of the Anna/Nastya game later.

In America do they not have interactive tv? In the UK, during Wimbledon you press the interactive button and you can choose between 5 courts. Thought they'd have something similar in the states.

I'm so jealous of you guys and your interactive telvision coverage.

And yes Frank, some Americans are known to complain about our television coverage. But I only complain when it's warranted. And I don't like having Agassi and Roddick shoved down our throats at every turn because I want to watch a broad array of tennis matches and not just those played by top Americans.

I wish we had interactive tv here...

We do have a system like that with football but it's very expensive and the Champions League matches of my favourite team are covered by Dutch television anyway...

Cat, I agree with you...Luckily we don't have that problem here...I guess it's also an advantage there are no Dutch players in the tournament anymore...They've got plenty of time to show something of every match...:)

Well Myskina is not American and her name is not Maria

Really.. if that was anybody either than Agassi or Roddick on Ashe, i'm sure that they would have showed us the end of it.

Do watch Roddick's second round match, though ;)

While I'm surprised they did not show any of this match, is this upset really historic?

Thanks Becca. ;) Agassi was in his 10 minute warmup when Chakvetadze's huge upset of Myskina was taking place. I would think they could leave Agassi's warmup for 5 minutes to cover one of the biggest upsets in grand slam history. But I guess I'm asking for too much.

Becca, did you attend U.S. Open this year and make it 3 years in a row?

You're wrong they did show one point, the match point. That's obviously enough to summarize the match. They should show all the matches like this, its much faster and leaves out all those other boring points.

Ofcourse not it is only historic when it's a Williams.

Ok that's not what I meant at all. However in this case, if venus had lost it would be historic cause it would be the first time in her US Open History that she had not made the semis. It's not like Myskina was defending champion, or the number one seed, so again I don't see how wher losing is historic. If I am missing something and it is infact historic then by all means please share it.

USA's tennis coverage is the best!!!!!! 100 times better than ESPN.

I'm sure there are many, including me,who could care less about watching Myskina. USA made the right call not showing her match.

As soon as the BOSS's match from hell ended the telecast went directly to
Myskina's match from hell.

I hate this girl who won. She irked me. The whole lefty thing threw
Myskina off her usually great rallies. You can't figure what direction
any of the little punk's balls were going. :p

But I would have liked to have seen MORE of the #3 ranked player in the world

This punk who won looked like the class smarty pants who
always raises her hand to answer questions. She also never
forgets to bring presents to the teacher. I felt like smacking her.
Funny, so did Myskina, from the look of the Frosty the Snowman
end of match handshake. :p

You bet :)

I went Thursday and Friday of qualies and Monday and Tuesday of the main draw.

Now.. pray with me that Nadal will be able to get a racquet on Roddick's serve and we might actually get a good match :p

The first two sets of Andre's match were very good. Mayer has a great unorthodox style :)

Serious question, Sky in the UK showed the match (Eurosport are showing Sky coverage) alongside 4 others - 3 are commentated by largely US teams. I can't believe they are televising this just for Sky? Isn't someone in the US showing it all too?

I think we are getting the international feed which features
the big seeds, and depending on your country, also shows
local favorites.

Our coverage in South East Asia was as follow today.
Paradorn, Justine, Myskina, Agassi, Venus, and Moya.

Japan's coverage was Shinobu, Justine, Agassi, Venus and Moya.

Really strange that Asia get's full Venus, and not the USA?

USA's tennis coverge is much, much better than ESPN's. I am one of those who could care less about Myskina. I am sure that if they had shown that match viewership would have gone down.

It seems as if they are willing to show tough mens matches with non popular players but they won't do the same for the women. I can understand if she won 6-0 6-1 but jeez....

the cat, do you remember USA's coverage last year? At every turn, they put down Myskina. I bet the people in charge at USA still don't think of Myskina as a true threat to win a slam, and thus don't bother with her.

Which "non popular" mens players? They did show Dent and Fish, but ... they are American, so that isn't a big surprise. Either than that, who have they shown? Massu? He's the gold medalist and was playing in the second longest match at the USO ever. I applaud USA for showing us some of that.

And last night the USA Network cam on the air at 7pm EST and the Williams/Golovin match didn't start until 7:30pm EST. They had a half hour to show some of the thrilling Nalbandian/Youhzny match but they completely ignored it.
