now its for granted

after the no show at the olympics and the early exit at the US Open Barbara Schett retires after the Australian Open 05. Until then she will play Linz and one more tournament

in a statement she says , " I cant win tight matches anymore. It´s a mental problem that during a match I suddenly think I cant win this battle therefore its necessary to stop now"

She wants to work as a coach or as a tournament director now

bye bye Babsi

OMG....Babsi....:sad::sad:......
But good career she had, at least she had a run for that top 10 ranking,
especially that upset over Venus in RG, she'll be remembered.
Good Luck in your future Babsi:D.

A good decision, it was sad to see her leap outside the top 50 and go on her string of losses early last year.

Schett was a pretty average player until she had a breakthrough in 1999 where she reached the top 10... she is a brilliantly consistent and crafty player with smooth groundstrokes.

I hope she enjoys her last few tournaments, especially with the Fed Cup semis and goes out after a strong Aussie Open, one of her favourite tourneys :)

omg!! is this for real? how sad, but then i understand. her form since 2002 has gone downhill very quickly.

1999 was her year, and what a great year for her it was!

 I like Babsi very much!! I remember (with a lot of fondness) her doubles partnership with Anke Huber - Team Schuber... ;) I'm sorry to read this news but she's an amazing player (former Top 10 player of course :yeah: ) and I wish her happiness in whatever she does with her life... :) Viel Glück Babsi!!

*sending best wishes to Babsi fans* :)

Oh, Babsi...
She has always been really kind and nice! And still one of the prettiest players, definetely :-)
But I think it is the best decision, she is in danger of dropping out of the top 100 soon, and it would be sad for her only to play for the main draw...
Anyway, I remember her co-commentating on Eurosport, (I think it was Filderstadt and Linz) and she did a really good job!!! It is nice to her something from people who really know the players who they are talking about!!!
Hope we will hear from her, in the future! And good luck for the last tournaments :crying2:

Sigh..she definitely had talent but not the mind to win those tight matches..but she should not give up!

Anyway..Babsi beating Venus in that 1st round at the French Open is the reason why they have 32 seeds now..

best best better

Players are no doubt used to the fact that there will come a time when physically they can no longer compete,
but it must be a really sad day when you have to admit to yourself that you can’t compete mentally at the top level. I think it's a brave decision from her.

It’s such a shame for babsi and for tennis, because she’s one of those players that is good enough to cause an upset, and hence players like her make the women’s game more interesting. On a happy note though I’m glad that she’s come to the best decision for her, and I wish her every success in the future.

Goodbye Babsi!  You were always one of my favorite players!

She had a good career.. espcially in 1999, when she reached the #7 place on the rankings and reached the QF at the US Open.

Babsi you will be missed!

Well this is the official news, if she has a better indoor season she will continue on, if not she will more than likely retire in Linz or Australian Open.

This is coming from someone close to Babsi as well.

But it doesn't matter atm because the official news is that nothing has been decided yet.

And I really think unless the news has been ok'ed by Babsi herself then it shouldn't be made public.

Someone the face of tennis is changing for me -- first Amanda went, then Wayne Ferreira, now Barbara Schett -- there's always this talk about Davenport maybe quitting, and I can't really see players like Martinez, Seles, Rubin, Raymond, Agassi hanging on for years to come. Somehow all the names that were around when I started following tennis intensely are not being mentioned anymore -- e.g. Sampras, Hingis, Graf, Rafter, Ivanesivic. Some great names.

now its for granted

Already?

after the no show at the olympics and the early exit at the US Open Barbara Schett retires after the Australian Open 05. Until then she will play Linz and one more tournament

I am not surprised. She's played well in Melbourne. I expected her to play her last match there.

in a statement she says , " I cant win tight matches anymore. It´s a mental problem that during a match I suddenly think I cant win this battle therefore its necessary to stop now"

Indeed.

She wants to work as a coach or as a tournament director now

Tournament director would suit her fine. Look at Anke Huber. Plus she looks too young to be a tennis coach.

If it is true i am surprised

I thought she would keep going until she was 30 considering her impressive doubles results.

I wonder what will happen to the excellent web site

www.barbara-schett.net (http://www.barbara-schett.net) will stay online.

Let me just say again anything on www.barbara-schett.net (http://www.barbara-schett.net) is official and anything else is just rumour or speculation.

It may turn out to be true as that is what a lot of people have been speculating, but Babsi hasn't OFFICIALLY retired, she is still thinking about what to do.

Xian

she def. said that these were her last US Open

If you compare her last year indoor season I dont expect too much

Babsi has written a diary entry for www.barbara-schett.net (http://www.barbara-schett.net) click on the link to see it.

So now finally I hope people realise that she hasn't retired yet, she is still thinking about what to do. I don't know what more there is to convince people.

I really think the topic title should be changed now.

whoo....the year is still young, so I guess it's too early to speculate, but with so many players retiring this year, I dont know if I can take another one.........Good luck in the future, is she planning on marrying anyone soon though?:). Wont be hard for her to find a man I believe .

No!!! What's wrong with this year??? First Coetzer, then Davenport's thinking of it... now Babsi???

Come on Babsi!!! Pls dun give up!!! You are playing not too badly I feel... Din you lead your country to victory in the fed cup against USA?? You can play it could be just bad luck at times... One of my other favourites, Tammy will drop to #90++ but she's not giving up still and I hope you'll also continue...

Sometimes we fall into a slump, but eventually we can pick it up!!! I really dun wish to say my well wishes to you that fast cos i believe you can go on playing well for a few more years... pls reconsider...

personally, i would rather not see Patty playing doubles with Babsi any longer bcuz i think it has a negative effect on Patty's singles game. I think Nicole Pratt, for example, is a much better suited partner for Patty. They were great together in Charleston. Casanova would also be a good partner for Patty but i suspect Patty has poor relations with the other Swiss girls and that's why she doesn't play doubles with Myriam or with Gagliardi.

I'm not a fan of Schett, but i think she should keep playing as long as she is in the Top 100. It just seems too soon for her to quit.
