One in a Million: Ipek Senoglu
by Brad Falkner
Monday, September 6, 2004

When most people think of the pioneers of women's tennis, names like Gibson, King, and Navratilova come to mind. Ipek Senoglu is the latest addition to the women who make a difference and inspire others. Like her predecessors, Senoglu is trailblazer heading down the road less traveled.

Turkey's number one tennis player Senoglu first made history in June 2004 when she was accepted into the women's doubles qualifying for the Wimbledon championships. Though she did not advance into the main draw of Wimbledon, she did make it into the history books as the the first Turk ever to play in a qualifying tournament for a Grand Slam event.

Just like her game, Ipek kept moving forward and by the US Open, she had risen high enough into the rankings to gain direct entry into the doubles main draw, thus writing her own place in the history books.

"I want to show the children in my country that if they follow their dreams, anything is possible. In my country, people have a tendancy not to believe in themselves, they need to see somebody do it first," said Senoglu. "But it's so hard to travel on a road that has not been traveled on."

Widely regarded as a sport for the wealthy in Turkey, tennis is becoming more popular among the society as a whole. With the rapid growth in the number of courts available and the cost of playing going down, the sport is moving in the right direction. That said, Senoglu still believes that a lack of interest and, most importantly, lack of sponsorship in Turkey has added a few bumps in the road.

"I grew up with the words, 'Tennis players don't come from Turkey,'" Senoglu said. "There are still so few people in Turkey playing tennis at a world-class level. The general attitude is that it cannot be done, the people just don't believe in themselves."

Senoglu first picked up a racquet when she was 14. A gifted athlete, whose first love was basketball, she had to give up playing hoops due to a knee injury. That same year, she won the under-14 Turkish tennis championships in Istanbul. The coaches who had seen her play invited her to play at their club in Istanbul. "I stopped playing basketball full time and shifted my attention to tennis," Senoglu said.

That single-minded focus led to a full ride scholarship at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., where she bacame a three-time All-American and reached the NCAA semifinals in doubles two consecutive years (2000-2001). It was during this time when she first met her US Open doubles partner Laura Granville.

"I knew that she was a great player from playing against her in college. I love playing with her, she's a smart player," Granville said. "She's just a really cool girl and a lot of fun to be around. I hope to play with her more in the future."

Spend five miutes with Senoglu, whose smile is omnipresent, and it becomes clear that she's a warm individual with a playful nature. After practice, Senoglu, Granville, Shenay Perry, and Granville's father are having a bite to eat. After Mr. Granville waxes poetic about a favorite line from a classic movie (that none of the girls have seen or even heard of), Senoglu says with gentle laugh, "Mr. Granville, please give me a hug."

In the often-prickly social culture of the WTA, Senoglu's presence is a breath of fresh air. There is no haughty air about her. She is a humble, good-natured, charming young woman with a wonderful sense of humor. One can only hope that her positive attitude will be infectious.

"When I first got to the US Open, I didn't even know how to get a practice court. Anastasia Myskina's coach Jens Gerlach had to show me how to do it," chuckles Senoglu.

Senoglu does not have a coach and regularly travels alone on the tour. Her father has joined her in New York for companionship and encouragement. Her support group this week also includes former Pepperdine teammate and current assistant women's assistant coach Cintia Tortorella. Tortorella is not surprised by Senoglu's recent success.

"In college she was always saying that she wanted to go pro and we all thought that she should do it," says Tortorella. "It helps too that she's so independent."

Senoglu turned pro after college and her results on the satellite circuit have led to a steady climb in the world rankings. The current WTA listing has her at number 313 in singles and 117 in doubles. She is the higest-ranked Turkish player in the history of tennis.

Senoglu recalls her first Grand Slam experience at Wimbledon earlier this year, "When I asked the officials how much the deposit was for the practice balls, the lady smiled at me and said 'Honey, you're in a Grand Slam now.'"

She plays for the love of the game and plans to step up her fitness level in the fall and continue to play both doubles and singles.

"Two years ago people laughed at me and said, 'You'll never play a Grand Slam.' Now they're asking me, 'When are you playing?'"

I just wanted to post this again :p

That's quite unbelivable but today I met her :D
I was taking some pictures of Lazar Magdninchev (who won the sattelite circuit in Israel today) when she asked me to email her the pictures, because Lazar is "like a brother to her". We chatted for a few minutes and she's really nice, I told her of the article (her first reaction was "oh my, an article, they always write shit about me"), then I told her that she was described as Turkey's best ever tennis player, and she smiled and said "oh, finally something positive".

Just had a good time. Took a picture with her, but I won't post it as we both look pretty bad there and it's too big anyways lol :p

She's playing in the doubles final tommorow, hope I'll be able to go and watch.

IPEK'S AUSTRALIA DIARY

This was the first time I have been to Australia. My journey started in the capital. Canberra seemed too calm and quiet after Istanbul where I can pretty much say what day it is just by looking at the traffic. However, everyday seemed like a Sunday in Canberra since there was no traffic at all.

I had no partner going into Canberra since I had no idea when I was going to make it there due to visa problems. It took the Australian embassy three weeks before giving us the visas and therefore I was able to fly to Canberra only 2 days before the tourney was due to start. Because of this late arrival, I kept feeling dizzy for the next 4-5 days, with a lot of headache on top of it. I guess I should think it is normal since my body was struggling to get used to 25 degrees of difference in the weather!

I ended up playing with Andreea Vanc from Romania and we played against Serra Zanetti and Parra. We lost to them in 2 sets. I must say that the fact that I was still jet lagged and it was my first tournament of the year affected my game and I struggled. So did my partner.

I came to Melbourne on the Thursday before the tournament was to start and by then I was already pretty much adjusted to the climate. One thing that surprised me was that I didn't feel as excited as I was in US Open or as nervous as I was at Wimbledon. I remember feeling a lot more excited to see all the stars of the tennis world in the previous grand slams. I guess now I feel that they are just as human and similar to me so I just focus on my tennis rather than stare at their lives.

I partnered up with Julia Beylgezimer of Ukraine and we drew the 12th seeded Chinese duo, Zheng and Yen. We were the underdogs when we started our match on court 14 and there were so many Chinese spectators that it felt similar to walking in the Chinatown!

After losing the first set 6-2, we came back to fight and got the second set 6-2. We got back down 2-0 on the third set but after that we started to play really well and ended up winning the final set 6-4. I must admit that Zheng has an unbelievable backhand and Yen was everywhere on the court. It's not possible to deny the rising level of the Chinese players.

On the second round we were scheduled to play Santangelo of Italy and Russel of USA. I started the match very badly and then, even though Yulia played well and tried to hang in there, we lost the first set pretty easy. I sarted to play a bit better in the second set and we ended up winning it after saving a matchpoint. They took a "toilet break" whichI think was a good call for them. We lost momentum, started off badly and got broken in Julia's serve to go down 2-0. Then they got ahead 3-0, and then 4-1, and then 5-1, and then 5-2, and then 5-3 and we were up 30-0! Julia and I however then missed some very easy volleys and ended up pushing that last chance we had away. The fact that even though we played really badly and were still close proved that it was really a winnable match for us. They later beat 8th seeded Sugiyama and Dementieva to reach the quarters.

I think Yulai and I could be a good pair for the future since we found chemistry. We shall see when we get to play together again...

It all was another experience which is going to stay with me for a long time. In Melbourne, I had chance to spend a lot of time with a very good friend of mine and we actually ended up staying together. She is one of the top players on the tour and one of the nicest as well. The more I get to spend time on the tour with the top girls, the more I see how hard their life is: the loneliness and all the demands of the tour life...

I guess everything has a price and we all pay no matter what we chose to do... at least I'm doing something I love...

Weds, June 8th

Hi everyone,
Its been 8 days since I had my surgery and I m happy to tell you all that it went really well. The surgery took 2 hours 45 minutes and was a successful one. I have started my physiotherapy on the very next day, and since then I have been working very hard for about 2 hours everyday to get my shoulder fit and strong again..

I want to write a few thank you s on this entry to my diary…Firstly I would like to thank American Hospital not only for their sponsoring my surgery and all the other related fees but also for the stuff’s genuinity, patience, and attention. I was taken care of like a princess and it wouldn’t be the same without the smiles on their faces.

Secondly, I would like to thank a very very special friend of mine, Basak, who has made the whole surgery thing fun and eased my anger and pain and was kind enough to bear all my nerves and face

Thirdly, I believe without all ur support emails and messages, it would be a lot harder to keep myself positive. Thank you all for your get well posts.

I m sure you all know its my birthday today and I want to tell you that this is the first time in 7-8 years that I m in Turkey and enjoying my special day..it feels great to be home and getting spoiled

See u soon…

NEW DIARY

Sat, July 16th

I m going to start hitting tennis balls on the wall on next Monday. Hoorrrayyyyy!!! Of course at first its going to be very few but it still is really exciting that I m going to be back on a tennis court again after a long period of time.
My therapy had to slow down last week due to a slight pain in my shoulder (a bit too much swimming last week, I think). SO im actually starting CYBEX next week. It seems to me that it’s a pattern with me to push myself too much after taking injury times so I decided that I’m gonna move slowly but surely rather than rushing and delaying my healing.
I went to see The War of the Worlds last week and was quite disappointed since I had been waiting to see it since February. Still, it’s Batman next week, so that might be better!
In addition, I’ve recently bought a dining table for my new flat so I’m really excited and plan to invite my friends over whilst I m training and still back in Istanbul and show all my friends what a great cook I am!! If you were to ask me what I cook the best , which is usually what people ask, I ‘d probably couldn’t give any specific answer. However, I must admit I quite am proud of my cookies and oriental Turkish food.
GO IPEK !!
That was how my life has been since my last diary entry…
Xx

Breaking New Ground: Ipek Senoglu

"Tennis has not been a big sport until now in Turkey."
The Turkish are renowned for their successes in soccer and wrestling, and other sports are also popular, like basketball, volleyball and handball. With large investments from the government in recent years, organized sports in Turkey, particularly Olympic sports, have gone from upper class social pasttimes to activities for the masses. Although tennis is not at the forefront of this movement, it is certainly a sport that has recently seen noticeable growth. Much of this growth has coincided with this year's inaugural Istanbul Cup and the achievements of Turkey's top player, 26-year-old Ipek Senoglu, whose professional tennis career developed mainly when the sport was not as accessible as it is today.

Senoglu's earliest tennis memories were of venturing out to the courts at the age of four to play with family members, but her early years were mainly devoted to a different, more popular and well-funded sport. She played and excelled in basketball, making it all the way to the junior national team, but injuries prevented her at 14 from continuing, and she turned her attention back to tennis.

Despite the lack of any Turkish tennis role models, decent hitting partners and funding for a coach, Senoglu was determined to learn to play the sport as best she could, with dreams of one day playing professionally. Her talents became apparent quickly, as she soon became the under-14 Turkish tennis champion. She realized, however, that pursuing tennis further than the national junior level meant she would have to leave Turkey, as there was no support from her federation and no national junior development program or team.

"I started to play tennis (seriously) because it is something I always did," said Senoglu, who knew that she would have to seek opportunities outside of the country to pursue her dream. "I was going to be able to get a university scholarship with it in America."

After winning two ITF Women's Circuit doubles events in Turkey as a teenager, Senoglu was convinced that it was time to commit to the pursuit of a career in the sport. She accepted a tennis scholarship at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, where she received the coaching, hitting partners and funding she needed to take her tennis to the next level. Among other accomplishments, she was a 2000 and 2001 NCAA semifinalist in doubles, and after graduation she turned professional, an idea uncommon to the traditional Turkish school of thought.

"It was always a question in my mind if I could play tennis professionally, not even to play a Grand Slam, but just to play professionally," she said. "The idea was strange in itself."

In addition to continued success on the ITF Women's Circuit, Senoglu has realized many firsts on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and at the Grand Slams, beginning at Wimbledon in 2004, where she became the first Turk to play at a Grand Slam event when she contested the doubles qualifying.

"It was really amazing for people to even understand me when I said I was going to play a Grand Slam," she said. "The idea was so far away, it was even far away from me until I saw all these girls at college in America, then I thought I could do it, but it's tough, because I never had the life of a tennis player."

Shortly afterwards at the US Open, she became the first Turk to play in the main draw at a Grand Slam event, reaching the third round with close friend Laura Granville before losing to top seeds and eventual champions Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez.

"I don't think I quite realized what was going on until it was over," she said. "It was great playing at Wimbledon, but playing on centre court at the US Open against Paola and Virginia, to have the Turkish flag there, that was something I could never imagine."

Senoglu has also played main draw doubles five times on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, reaching the quarterfinals at three, and made her second Grand Slam doubles main draw appearance at the 2005 Australian Open, reaching the second round with partner Yulia Beygelzimer. When a new $200,000 Tier III event was confirmed earlier this year by the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour as being in Istanbul, Senoglu knew that Turkish tennis had just taken a major step in the right direction.

"It was a dream come true for me," said Senoglu on her reaction to the tournament's announcement. "The sponsors are paying attention and the people are learning what tennis is."

In a spectacular pre-tournament event, top seed and former world No.1 Venus Williams made a grand entrance, having a hit with Senoglu on the Bosphorus Bridge. Two lanes of the 1.2-kilometre bridge, which spans the Bosphorus Strait and symbolically links Europe with Asia, were closed for an hour early on the Sunday morning to allow the two players to trade groundstrokes under clear and sunny skies. The court was laid out in white ribbon by a team of well-trained ballkids, as dozens of television crews and reporters captured every shot hit by the two women. Williams ended up going all the way in the clay court event, defeating rising Czech star Nicole Vaidisova, who was seeded No.2, in a much-anticipated final. Just weeks later, she won her third Wimbledon title.

Not only are Senoglu and the Istanbul Cup hoping to promote the sport in Turkey, they are also hoping to cultivate international interest in the country, beginning with the raising of awareness about the Turkish culture. Williams herself has commented on how Senoglu's responsibilities are very different from her own, in that she is not just playing tennis for herself, but for the betterment of the sport, children and women in her country.

"Travelling on Tour, people would ask me if we had cars in Turkey, or if I follow my men in Turkey, or if I have to wear long dresses when I play," said Senoglu. "I was really happy that at least the girls on Tour weren't going to ask me those questions anymore!"

Although the new Istanbul Cup and Senoglu's achievements are increasing awareness of tennis, things have not always been so positive for the sport in Turkey. Throughout her career, Senoglu has often received little or no support at all from her country. The financial sponsor which she has had for the last three years helps her with travel expenses but not much else, and she has never been able to afford a coach, a manager, or a hitting partner. In addition, she often struggles to obtain visas on time to travel to different countries.

"I guess it's my personality that's helped me," she said on overcoming the lack of support to become a professional tennis player. "I'm quite adventurous, and I like to do things that have not been done before. I'm doing something for the first time for my country."

Until recently, tennis was also rarely covered on television and in the media to the same extent as it was in the rest of Europe and in other areas of the world, which was unfortunate for fans of the sport as well as for any potentially talented youngsters.

"It was only possible to watch tennis from Grand Slam to Grand Slam, and even that was probably from semifinals to finals," said Senoglu on the television coverage of the sport when she was growing up. It has become vastly improved as of late, often broadcasting right from the first round at the major tournaments.

Senoglu is optimistic that her own best tennis is still to come, confident she can achieve a Top 10 ranking in doubles. She's currently rehabilitating her right shoulder, which she injured at this year's Australian Open and which required surgery on May 29. Regardless, she hopes she is helping the next generation of Turkish players to have an easier time than she did in making it on the professional Tour, knowing how difficult it is to develop a career without anyone to look up to.

"I was offered to become American when I was playing in college, but I don't want kids to have no role model like when I grew up," said Senoglu, who chose to return to Turkey after her education. "Hopefully, I am being a role model for them. I think I'm making it easier for the kids to be where I am, but I think I still have a lot to do.

"I know how hard it is to take tennis seriously when you had no one in front of you who took it seriously before."

Senoglu connects with her fans through her official Web site, www.ipeksenoglu.com, in the hope she can help young players believe in themselves and follow their dreams like she did, except this time with somebody there to encourage them.

"I try to set aside time every day to talk to people myself," she said, "to tell kids that they can make their dreams come true. Other days I meet with kids. I think we have a lot of work to do but it's only going to get better."

Hi everyone,

Sorry for not being able to write for long time. I just wanted to make sure that I give you some good news after a long time. I would like to thank you all for your supporting messages and emails for the last three months.

Past three months have not been easy for me since I had to take injury time-off due to a shoulder surgery. However, it s past now and I have healed properly and quickly and cant wait to be back on court again.

I plan to play doubles for the rest of the year. The most important thing for me at the moment is to enjoy myself on the court and keep my self healthy since I have a lot to accomplish in the coming months.

I plan to play three tournaments in October in England, France and Turkey. I have not planned yet for the rest of the year since I want to take it easy and not put pressure on myself.

I could easily wait till January, which would be 6 months from the last tournament. This would allow me to get a protected ranking and I would start in January with a ranking of WTA 89 in doubles, however; I believe I can get in top 100 in time and the most important thing for me at the moment is to be healthy and start playing. My ranking will rise in time.

These are the good news for now and I hope to give you many more...

I laughed it because I saw a very big similarity on most of the Turks about this

Thats not about your conversation with Ipek but ;

I mean when a person says you something true but bad to you,you are saying like "I hate her/him","I will never talk with her/him","She/He is a bitch!" ext.

When they saying to you a little word of "sorry",you just start to like her/him again and saying "I was never bad to her/him!" :rolls:

It just happened numerous time I have to say,It was very strange at first but I got used it now

In Germany If I am bad to you, that will %95 wont change, but If I am good to you It wont change either ;)

January 2006!

Hi everyone,

I must admit I have had a tough year in 2005...but it did for sure teach me lots of things as well.

To be out for a whole season due to an injury after the most successful year of my career was really painful and instructive. I learned about when to practice hard and when I should listen to my body's call to rest. I realized that a lot of tennis fans do follow me and support me even when I'm injured and it's made me stronger in character and mind. After a long time of physiotherapy and rest, my shoulder is pain free and I have been practicing very hard for the last 3 months. I cant wait to start playing matches and I think is all I need.

I have another news for you all. I have started to practice with ALAADDIN KARAGOZ, and am planning to work with him during the 2006 season. I and close friends call him ALO - it's his nickname and I have already added a lot to my volley and my serve due to the technical changes we have made during the time off. I admire him a lot since I grew up watching Alo's many matches and hope to have my best years in tennis to come.

GENEL SIGORTA will be my sponsor for 2006 again and I would like to thank them for believing in me and supporting me throughout my good and bad times. I don't think it would be the same without their financial and mental support.

My parents and my brother were so great during my injury that I realized how lucky I was to have a family like them once again. My friends BASAK and ISIK were so supportive and ready to help when I needed that I went through my injury with less damage to my self mentally and more fun in my life other than tennis. My friend and phsiothrepist AYLA deserves many thanks for bearing with my moody face and questions during 3 months of physio everyday. You were all so great and giving, THANK YOU.

I feel I should also thank the American Hospital in Istanbul, for the staff's smile everyday I went there and for taking special care of me. They are really good in what they do.

At last, but not least, I would like to thank all of you, who have kept my hopes, my strength, my confidence up during this time of injury throughout your emails and messages. I really appreciate it all. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Spanish tennis player Carla Suarez-Navarro won her third international singles title (10.000 dollars tournaments) at the Vale do Lobo Ladies Open.

The 7th edition of this event, that counts for the WTA Tour world rankings, was dominated by Suarez-Navarro, the first seeded player in the singles main draw.

In the final, she beat the Turkish Ipek Senoglu by 6-2 and 6-3 in just 70 minutes. The 26 years-old unranked Senoglu is a star in her native country.

She was the first Turkish to play in a Grand Slam tournament, when she entered the Wimbledon qualifying doubles draw in 2004.

Later that year, she got in the doubles main draw of the US Open, and at the 2005 Australian Open she got injured and underwent surgery on May the 29th.

When she was recovering, she had the chance to play an exhibition match against Venus Williams on a tennis court specialy made on the Istambul Bridge. «It was a chance of a lifetime, but I agravated my injury», Senoglu admits.

Since then, she has lost all her singles ranking points and is trying to comme back. In the 2006 Vale do Lobo Ladies Open, her first tournament since November 2005, she won three qualifying rounds and four main draw rounds, reaching the final exausted. She was also a loser runner-up in the doubles draw. In the singles final, the powerfull game of the Suarez-Navarro just killed her.
«A lot of players from my country won events in Portugal and went on to have huge careers. I hope to become one of them», said Carla Suarez-Navarro, remembering Spanish idols such as Arantxa Sanchez, Emílio Sanchez, Sergi Bruguera, Carlos Costa, Albert Costa and Alberto Berasategui, among many others who had good wins in Portugal.

I prefer Ipek to play doubles event on $50K events

She can do well in singles but to start all over from $10K events are hurting her doubles ranking too

She can play few higher level tournenements and easily can be top 100 in doubles soon in my opinion

She has the talent :)
