Yes, some player in the WTA played to her ranking or better in EVRY single tournament she played in. Actually, probably more than one did. Give me the highest ranking one.

My only guess off the top of my head would be Serena, but I haven't actually looked at her record or anything. Just can't remember her losing that early.

In fact, i think she was a QF or better at every event, and she was ranked like #8-10 for a bit of the year, so she's my guess!

Yep - Serena!

I couldn't imagine it being anyone other than Serena.

Su-Wei Hsieh won all 4 challengers she played , plus reached SF of the WTA event in Bali and QF in Pattaya City.

Maybe Monica was ranked lower as Serena when she beat her in Los Angeles but I am not sure about that.

Irma is right. I've checked Michael Blue's website and the ranking on Jannak's one: Monica was ranked #10 as of August 6th and seeded #6 in Los Angeles, while Serena was ranked #8 and seeded #4.

Indeed. But that would represent a failure to play to her SEEDING, not to her RANKING. However Serena was the player I was thinking of. That string of QF, QF, QF all season, followed by a #6 ranking just struck me.

Anybod know if a player has ever gone through a season w/o ever losing to a lower ranking player?

Last year Seles only lost to players ranked above her, with the exception of Julie Halard (retired injured) and Mary Pierce.

Oh, I see. Anyway there's no doubt that Serena showed an impressive consistency at high level.

Anna probarly didn`t lose to anybody ranked lower as her her in 96,97 since I am pretty sure that those days she never lost to anybody outside the top 15.

I would have to say Monica Seles

Didn't Monica lose to Daja Bedanova at the USOpen in 2001?

Plus her loss to Tathiana Garbin in IW in 2nd rd.

I don't think Steffi Graf lost to a lower ranked player in all of 1987. I believe her only two losses were to Martina Navratilova, who was higher ranked at the time.
