yesterday I attended the tele.ring tennistrophy in St. Anton. It is an invitation tournament and is famous for it's parties. The defending champions are Patty Schnyder and Jevgeni Kafelnikov.
This year the following players are competing:
Yevgeni Kafelnikov
Dominik Hrbaty
Roger Federer
Cedric Pioline
Markus Hipfl
Stefan Koubek
Yesterday I saw Hrbaty - Pioline, Schett - Schnyder and Kafelnikov - Koubek
Dominik Hrbaty against Cedric Pioline wasn't a really good match - they both made a lot of mistakes and after losing the first set 5-7 Dominik had to retire because of an ankle problem (I believe it was the ankle...)
Then Patty and Babsi came on the court. It's kinda Babsis home tournament so the crowd was cheering her alot. Patty took the first set easily 6-4. Then she lost the second one 3-6. They played a tiebreak until 10 instead of the third set. Patty won the tiebreak 10-7. Overall I have to say that Patty played really some great tennis and sometimes the match was really good, but Babsi Schett seemed a little unmotivated. There were a lot of balls she didn't even try to catch. When Patty played a stop, she just watched the ball and didn't move. Also on the net, Patty made some great points and Babsi always lost the point when she moved forwards.
The last match was Kafelnikov - Koubek. This match was really great. In the beginning both of them were making a lot of mistakes, but in the end they played great tennis. Koubek won 6-2 5-7 13-11.
I'm going to attend the tournament again on friday and saturday and I'm really looking forward to seeing a great women's final on saturday.

Thanks for letting us know about the matches. I wish these matches were televised in the states! BTW, how did Patty look? It seems as though she is trying to make her way back to the 98 form that took her into the top ten. She won the last event of this year @ the Volvo crushing Nagoya, who's no slouch herself. Do you think Patty can make a comeback of sorts?

She looked great on the court. It seemed she was enjoying herself on the court and having fun. She also seemed well trained and was pretty fast.
If she's gotta have a comeback in 2002? - sure! I really hope so. If she is confident enough again, she can be top 20 next year. With winning the Pattaya Open she has shown, that she is still able to win...
btw - these matches weren't even televised here in Austria. This tournament is really small and hardly known - even tough it's just about 30 km away from my place, there are lots of people who don't know that there's a tennis tournament!

I just came back from St. Anton and Patty won the tournament. She easily trashed Henrieta Nagyova 6-2 6-2. Patty never struggled during the whole match and she really played some great tennis. She fairly made mistakes and played good angles. Henrieta Nagyova made some mistakes. Sometimes her strokes were harder, but Patty always outplayed her.

WELL DONE, PATTY !!!!

I LOVE Henrieta, but I am so happy for Patty.......she keeps playing better and better!

I've seen her playing in St. Anton the past three years but this was definitely the best match she ever played at this tourney.
It was kinda "the old Patty", playing great angles - especially with the backhand, powerfull shots, a great serve and really great tactics. She hit a lot of balls long the ling with the backhand and Henrieta hadn't even a chance reaching these balls. Sometimes she came forward to the net and made the points.
It was really great to see her playing at this high level again - even though it was just an exhibition tournament with lots of parties.
In the aftermatch interview she told the reporter, that there is no more space in her garage for the second Harley. She also is afraid of big motorbikes, so she won't take the driving test.
btw - did you know that on friday was Patty's 23 rd birthday and on saturday it was Henrieta's 23 rd birthday?
Well done Patty!!
Good to see you're in form!! Keep it up!!
And happy belated birthday!!
Btw who won the mens competition??
Dec 17th, 2001, 12:10 PM
Roger Federer won the men's competition in a tough final against Markus Hipfl.
btw on friday there was an exhibition match between Roger Federer, Patty Schnyder and Yannick Noah. It was great to see that they were having fun on the court
and of course the crowd was excited!

Congrats to Patty and Roger.

I was really dissapointed about the way Babsi Schett played. It seemed she wasn't really on the court 100%. She was slow and often she didn't even try to catch a ball. When both players were at the net, I think Babsi didn't even make a single point against Patty...
I expected her to play at her usual level, because it's kinda her home tournament and the whole crowd was cheering her, but she just didn't.
btw Doris: You don't need to worry about skiing, as long as Sonja Nef is still skiing this good!

Schnyderfan, it was just an exo, so I wouldn't become concerned just yet as it was no big deal.
