That Maria will WIN the US Open?

I still think there is a great chance. She will rise to the occasion. :)

I don't think she will win it. But I have the utmost faith that she will put this bad loss behind her and do herself proud. All great champions have bad losses.

I don't have much faith she'll win it...But that has nothing to do with the loss to Washington...
When the whole media circus dies down and allows Maria to fully concentrate on her tennis again...Then she will be able to reach her full potential and win slams and Tier I's...But she won't win the US Open this year...

Andy.

i Dont think her game in hard court is ready yet i do think she will definatly win it in years to come but i dont think it will happen this year, but you never know, Good Luck Maria.

SWP

I really think she will do well and make us all proud of her. Maybe not necessarily winning it though. Anything can happen though as there is a chance.

Frank
Aug 25th, 2004, 12:37 PM
There's a chance for sure...But I've got about 8 players who I give more chance than Maria at this moment...

Good luck anyway Maria!

Which 8? I can only think of 5 (the people seeded ahead of her but not dementieva).

SWP

Actually only 4, the people seeded ahead of her, minus dementieva and mauresmo.

Frank

Which 8? I can only think of 5 (the people seeded ahead of her but not dementieva). Davenport, JHH, Dementieva, Myskina, Zvonareva, Serena, Venus, Mauresmo...

Davenport, JHH, Dementieva, Myskina, Zvonareva, Serena, Venus, Mauresmo...

No no no, I think you are just too disapointed about last night.

Frank
Aug 25th, 2004, 12:46 PM
This has nothing to do with last night...I would have given the same names before her Washington match...

SWP
Aug 25th, 2004, 12:49 PM
Dementieva has been is worse form than Maria as has Venus. Zvonareva doesn't really have a chance. Mauresmo i can understand but pressure gets to her head and she cannot cope with pressure.

I still think Lindsay is the big favourite for the US Open. Justine must be a favourite too now, considering she won the Gold at the Olympics. Serena will be out to get it too.

SWP
Aug 25th, 2004, 01:10 PM
According to the bookies: Justine is fav, serena 2nd, lindsay 3rd, mauresmo 4th, maria and venus tied 5th, capriati next. Myskina is like 9th fav at 20/1.

Aug 25th, 2004, 01:24 PM
Yeah I agree Eddy, Davenport and JHH would have to go in favourites.

Frank

Correct Andy...But at least Maria won Birmingham before Wimbledon...

Anyway...Anything could happen really...It's going to be a very open tournament...

Andy.
Aug 26th, 2004, 05:26 AM
Yes the US Open is a very open tournament and i think a lot a players are capable of winning. I think that Davenport and Justine are the Strong favourites, The williams sisters will be Gunning for the tilte and cannot be disscounted, and then Myskina and Mauresmo are also strong contenders. Maria is also in with a shot but these players are more likely but at Grand Slams anything can happen.

SWP
Aug 26th, 2004, 09:39 AM
Sharapova 14/1 to win
Myskina 25/1 to win

So the experts think Maria has far more chance than her fellow Russians.

She'll have to overcome probably the toughest draw for any of the top seeds.

Looking at it, and her hardcourt form, making the QF's will be a miracle.

But I have faith... she will do the best she can do.

SWP
Aug 26th, 2004, 11:12 AM
Form is irrelevant when it comes to Grand Slams. We have to believe in Maria, I think she has more chance than any other russian player for sure. Bookies agree with me.

Frank
Aug 26th, 2004, 11:48 AM
Form is irrelevant when it comes to Grand Slams? Why is that? I agree a Grand Slam is something special and it's not difficult for a player to find motivation...But when you're hopelessly out of form...You won't win...

SWP
Aug 26th, 2004, 11:50 AM
She's not HOPELESSLY out of form. You worry to much, Frank. Be more confident and less worried.

Frank

I wasn't talking about Maria...Just in general...;)

Aug 26th, 2004, 11:54 AM
NO, she can't win it! Seesomes results of the summer, no finals!

So she can reach quartesfinals but never wins!

Bigboi
Aug 26th, 2004, 11:57 AM
But Maria isn't hopelessly out of form
from what i hear the match was won by mashona not lost by maria
The same applies to her other losses
Only good performances by her opponents are defeating maria, not poor performances by maria herself

Andy Mac
Aug 26th, 2004, 12:17 PM
i agree man.....and i think she jsut needs to train alot and get on her best game a.k.a.wimby! and she has a chance of reaching the quarters!

SWP

Reaching the QF is expected of her, i'm talking about advancing further.

Never expected it this year. Like I said in one of my earlier postings (still a newbie BTW), she doesn't have to win the US Open this year, although that would be nice too. If she does, she would be the year's only multi-major winner.

Also, remember she arrived at both Birmingham and Wimbledon with otherworldly optimism that had me scratching my head (and asking questions like "is this girl serious?"). I don't think that is the case now, I think her emotional state is different now, what with all those losses.

My prediction, at least the 3rd round, 4th round would be nice. Not lofty, but that means she's steadily improving in majors. In 2003 she was 1R, 1R, 4R and 2R,. In 2004, she was 3R Australia, QF in Roland Garros and then won Wimbledon. So 3R-4R for Flushing is OK by me, although I'm sure Maria and all you guys want something more.

And, just remember it took Martina Navratilova a decade to win her first US Open. It's not that easy.

I won't make any prediction. I just badly hope she's gonna do well despite the tough draw.

I'd be so pleased if she reaches the quarters so we can see a Justine - Maria match-up in a GS.

speaking of tough draws, did anyone notice how easy Anastasia Myskina's section of the draw is? I'm basing strictly on rankings of the players still left.

Andy Mac
Sep 2nd, 2004, 12:37 PM
no..how bad was it??

SWP
Sep 2nd, 2004, 12:39 PM
Myskina's draw isn't hard, she doesn't have to play a good player until QF.

Andy Mac
Sep 2nd, 2004, 01:05 PM

that's the one I was pointing out, there was almost no ranking player left in her section.

and then she lost too.

hahahah cept myskina's eliminated! :p :p

Edward.

Maria is gaining momentum with every game. Yesterday she was careless and let the second set slip....I believe she will be ready for Pierce.

Andy Mac
