View Full Version : Rika Fujiwara Cheering Thread!!!

She may have already had one but I wanted to start a new one with the news that she WON her first round US Open Qualifying match today 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-3 over the 16 seed Selima Sfar!!! She was down 5-2 in the first set and came back! In the third however she was up 4-1 and had a bit of a scare! It wouldn't be a Rika F match without drama! :) :bounce:

She now plays Cory Ann Avants in the next round who had a looong match in her first round against Neha Uberoi! :worship:

I have see Avants play and Rika should be able to win this one in straights, but you never know with her. ;)

Good luck Rika!!!! :hearts:

She is currently 219, but with this win she should move up significantly!!! :bounce:

Better late then never...

Rika got to the final round in qualifying with two very impressive, hard-fought wins. Unfortunately she wasn't able to close out the first set against Chakvetadze when leading 5-2 and set points. She lost 6-7(6), 2-6. Though it was a disappointing loss, this result will move Rika inside the top 200 for the first time a a year or two.

Good luck in Doubles with Shinobu, Rika!!!

Too bad Rika! Keep fightin' hard!!!! :hearts:

Rika won the 25K tourney in Ibaraki!!!!! She beat Shiho Hisamatsu 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the final!!!!! She's been on a roll of late and this big win should bring her ranking up about 20 spots, she's currenlty #194!!!! Go Rika!!!!

Sep 19th, 2004, 07:12 AM
Rika beat Milagros Sequera 6-2, 7-5!!! A very very impressive win over a top 100 player!!! Rika hasn't played this well since a couple of years ago!! I think she's even better now with two 25k wins and solid wins at the USO and here in Beijing!!! Her ranking is going to move up very quickly now!!!

Sep 19th, 2004, 07:37 PM

Oct 5th, 2004, 09:53 PM
Rika beat Saori Obata 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the 2nd round in Tokyo! She now plays Linteskaya, should be tough but it's very winnable!

Jan 1st, 2005, 09:43 PM
Rika lost her first round qualifying match today having to retire at 6-1, 3-0. Hopefully she's okay so she can play again next week. These were the scheduled first three tournaments of her year:

01/03-01/08 ASB Classic Auckland
01/09-01/14 Moorilla International
01/17-01/30 Australian Open

Rika was very sick over the New Year's... she's recovering now tho!

Go Rika!

Mar 12th, 2005, 10:06 PM
Rika is having BY FAR the best result of her career! Some incredible wins so far!

She beat Cohen Aloro 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and then she took out Czink 6-3, 6-2

She took out Jidkova 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. Up until then, probably her best career win as Jidkova is a very talented player! Then the big one, she took out the 17 Schiavone 6-3, 7-6(5)!! Incredible! Now she plays Benesova! She should be able to take out Benesova in this kind of form!!

The most remarkable thing about this run is that she usually chokes at big moments. Here she's fought back as usual but then has been able to close them out!! That should be huge for her confidence!! This is why I expect her to take out Benesova but who knows! Then she could play Kuznetsova and we could possibly see her on TV!

GREAT RUN FOR RIKA!!! Her ranking will move up to 219 after this tournament already so let's hope for another win and crack the top 100 for the first time. She's already near a career high!

Mar 12th, 2005, 10:52 PM
119. .... excellent. i really hope she keeps this form up! :D

Mar 13th, 2005, 03:25 AM
If Rika continues to serve well ....

She could go deep

Mar 13th, 2005, 01:10 PM
Good luck, Rika, for match vs Benesova!

Mar 13th, 2005, 08:24 PM
Rika defeated Benesova just now 7-6(1), 7-6(3)....another impressive win!! It was a crazy match with a lot of momentum switches. Rika was up 4-1 in the first and fell behind 4-5....then she fought back and won the TB very easily. In the second set it started off close, then Benesova took a 5-2 lead and Rika was serving at 2-5 and 0-40! She fought off the set points and climbed back into the set, saving a few more SP's on the way. She went up 6-5 but then lost serve in a close game. She bounced back and took another commanding lead in the TB and never looked back!!!! What a tournament for Rika! Now she'll most likely play Kuznetsova in the next round! What a great experience! And in this form, who knows, maybe she'll come up with something special against Kuznetsova!!!!! GO RIKA!

Brrrrr! Mmmmm! The score was 3-6, 2-6. There must have been many reasons for this loss, but there must have been many chances as well. I could've attacked more, but I didn't have enough consistant shots to damage the opponent today. But for some points, I could play my tennis and this tournament gave me a lot of confident. That's for sure. Thank you very for giving me messages from the early morning (in Japan). Those really helped me a lot.

Next week, I am the 15th out from the qualifying list, but I am going to Miami anyway to sign up. If I can't play in Miami, I am going to play in Redding, Calif. ($25,000 touney).

Well, this trip just began. I'll do my best! Ok now, I am going shopping now!!

Mar 16th, 2005, 05:13 AM
I love her even more with this message! THANK YOU EXHOPMAN! HOPE SHE CAN GET INTO MIAMI!

Today I ate out at the Japanese restaurant where was about 10mins away from here with Saori, ??? and my mom. Saori told me about her visit at Universal Studio and we spent some good time together. Lately, we often talk about how fast the time passed by, like "I was 20 year-old the other day, but now XX already!!" When I was in Taiwan, I talked to Maki (Arai) and we were both suprised that it has been 10 years passed since we went to the European tour together for the very first time!!

Now I turned 24. I would like to be a woman with honest and elegant atmosphere. but I would be different (aggressive!?) on the court!! ha ha ha... Oh boy, can I keep this comedian character still...

Anyhow, these are the pictures I took from tonight... and I was so busy in Miami...so I only have this sunset picture... with sadness of no.4 cut (of the qualifying) (lol)

This morning, the rain was pouring, but just before the starting time it got clear. We could play outside only for the first match. After all, one hour later, we got icy huge rain, so we played indoor the whole day.
My first round was against Ayami Takase, and I could win by (3)6-7, 7-5, 6-1. She played really well, but I was expecting too much and could hit the balls well. I could come back from 2-4 in the second only with just a fight.
For the dinner, with Ayami and her mom, we went to the steakhouse, Logan's Roadhouse. The bread before meal was really great! I love breads!! Also, the peanuts on the table... the salty taste really worked on my body after 3 hours match! Ayami and me were laughing and joking like that together.
It'll be the third match tomorrow. I'll keep looking at the balls and do my best!
This pic is from the dinner. Can you see the peanuts speading on the table, especially in front of me!? lol... and wow, I am the only one who's really really dark!! I can't catch up the beaty of the Takase family!!!

Everyone, good evening. Today we left Redding at 5 in the morning, and we just arrived at a hotel in Augusta, GA around 11 pm. From Atlanta, we got a rent a car and drove for two hours by my mom's driving. I assume I can't drive since I am under 25yo (**the age is just for the insurance price, I thought...). I couldn't drive for my mom...so what I could help her was... singing songs with loud music!! ha ha...
I will skip Amelia Island, but play two challenger tournaments and return to Charleston later. I'll switch the feeling and try my best tennis this week and would love to gain more points!!

It was 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4) today against Arvidsson. I heard we were playing for over 3 hours... when we started, it was around 2pm and was really hot, but towards the end, it was really cold!
For dinner, I went to a Japanese restaurant with Saori and others. and AGAIN, I enjoyed tuna and eels sushi. I have no match tomorrow, and will have both singles and doubles the day after tomorrow. I am playing doubles with Saori this week. Ok, good night and have a lovely day!

Apr. 3
Singles loss, Doubles win.
On the 2R, I defeated Ditty (USA) by 6-1, 6-4, but lost to Adriana Serra Zanetti (ITA) on QF by 4-6, 3-6.
Even though I didn't play well, I tried to attach on chance points, but her attack was much better and tougher than mine today. In doubles, with Saori, we defeated Mezak/Azarenska by 6-1, 6-2. Tomorrow, I'll have three doubles matches (after Saori's two singles matches) We'll try our best!

Apr. 2
This morning, it was stopping the rain. The people at the tournament swept the wet courts this morning, and we could being the matches at 9am. However, when leading at 5-1, it was postponed. Saori only did warmups, but three times... I heard tomorrow's prediction sounds better...so I'll try to focus again and do my best!

The long day is finally over...

Saori won the singles! Congrats!! Such a tough day! Singles semi-, final, and doubles the 2R thru the final... total of 5 matches a day were done! I heard it's a record! Really! Unfortunately we lost in the final...but Saori and me could play good doubles games!
Anywho, Saori! What a fighter! I learn it from her and will do my best for the rest of my two weeks here in the States. Everyone who always writes messages here, thank you!! To aim the ranking up, I'll run around and around on clay courts!! Please give me your support!! (babe...)

Anyway, the green clay was literally "green" (more grey?). It feels like the sand is a bit rougher and the court is faster?? Get the idea!?

my match starting tomorrow.

tomorrow's my 1r opponent is Victoria Azarenka (UKR) who advanced to the final last week in Augusta. She's only 15. She is a very "thin and loooong" player who attacks often. I'll just try to move around and won't miss any chances. Anyway, my match begins at 6pm tomorrow. (to Massa-san;s question, does it rain alot this time of the year in the states?), yes, depends on the place, but it rains a lot these days in redding and augusta.....

Cherry blossoms must be beautiful now!! I am envy you going to the cherry blossom viewing festival!!! but in Augusta, I could see some cherry blossoms... but it was all gone after raining... :(

I came back here (Lake Hamana, Japan) from Czech via Narita yesterday.

We couldn't use Akko's 2 wins. Well, her play was great...so it was unfortunate that the team lost. Hope we can do better next time. For myself, I wish I could have better judgement on the points that I really needed to win. For the Wimbledon MD, I'll play Lake Hamana and Gifu next week, and try to get more points! For the people who supported us, thank you!!

OKay, this is a question that maybe only Ex Hopman might know but why does Rika change racquets sooo many times? She's used like 4 or 5 different Yonex models in the last year or so....I thought she was settled on the white yonex onebut now there's a picture of her on her diary page of her website that shows her on Sunday in Budapest with a differnt Yonex racquet. I believe its the one Hantuchova and Jankovic use (as well as Mi-Ra Jeon and Ayumi Morita). Anyone know why she changes so much?

Rika beat Antonella Serra-Zanetti 6-0, 6-2 in the first round of LA! That's an expected win but not as expected was the convincing scoreline! Very confident play from Rika! Now she plays either Dinara Safina or Kristina Brandi. It'll be tough but very winnable!! GO RIKA!

Another solid performance from Rika in qualifying!! With a 6-1, 6-0 demolition of a Canadian WC and then a good three set win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over a good Russian player, Vesnina. Hopefully her MD spot will be a good one! She's also in the MD doubles with Muller... GOOD LUCK RIKA!

Her consistency at the WTA level has been remarkable...she's well inside the top 100 now!

Rika advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto with a 6-0, 6-3 trouncing of Marie Elena Camerin. Good win for RIka, this hsould bring her ranking up it an all time high! Her schedule is as follows:

- $75K Dubai, UAE
- Gold Coast, AUS
- Sydney, AUS
- Australian Open

I'd be annoyed if she'd have made the MD for either Canberra or Hobart. If not, playing Sydney qualies is ok.

Dec 5th, 2005, 06:45 AM
Wow....that's an ambitious schedule...playing Gold Coast and Sydney...? Well, hope she does well because she has virtually no points to defend until Indian Wells...and that could be a disaster for her ranking if she doesn't have some goood results....I bet she'll pull through!

After losing once again in the 1st round of a GS (Despite blowing 1 or 2 match points) Rika is having some good success in Tokyo:

Mar 6th, 2006, 04:42 AM
Rika has a million pts to defend...she needs a good run here or it's out of the top 150 she goes...GO RIKA!

Mar 7th, 2006, 02:31 AM
Rika won her first qualifying mathc 6-0,6-4! Nice win Rika! Next up is Camile Pin! Good luck Rika!

Mar 7th, 2006, 03:31 AM
That's a good win for RIka! After a long layoff I wondered about her confidence against a good opponent but she absolutely swept her aside. She needs a huge run here to get her ranking back up around the 100-120 mark because of the points she has to defend. She can do it! And now she plays Pin who she lost to a few weeks ago but should have beat...I favor her more in this match than last time they played...GO RIKA!

Mar 20th, 2006, 03:26 PM

Jun 19th, 2008, 04:33 PM
hope she can win a round, she had match points against a good player a couple years ago but lost the match.

one of her problems is that she is perhaps the worst player at closing out matches i've seen...no lead is safe. it probably has a lot to do with her lack of weapons and grinding style, mixed with nerves...

Jun 19th, 2008, 07:48 PM
Good luck in the Main Draw ! :D

Jun 23rd, 2008, 03:15 PM
Rika leads Katya 6-1 1-0

Jun 23rd, 2008, 04:12 PM
just as i was saying. rika can't finish matches.

she was up 6-1, 4-2 and now has lost 6 games in a row down a break in the third...looks like it's another 1st round exit. how can she really not get over this choking stuff? every match she plays is like this, she'll never get a good win like this with those nerves...how disappointing...

Jun 23rd, 2008, 06:09 PM

Either way, I am just happy to have Rika back and challenging the top players. I am sure she can end the year in the top 100. Hopefully she can overcome these nerves.

R. Fujiwara - 23 June

Monday, 23 June 2008

Kateryna Bondarenko def. Rika Fujiwara 1-6, 6-4, 6-3

Q. You had a very strong first set, but then things seemed to change for you in the second and third. What do you think changed?

RIKA FUJIWARA: Well, I was kind of surprising myself how I played on first set, but that made me a little bit pressure to myself. Because I had to keep that on, to, like, keep playing like that: really aggressive. I think when I was up 4 2 in second set maybe too much pressure, I put too much pressure on me. I couldn't make first serve, and then the things slowly change from this point.

So I think just the mental thing. Yeah, I thought I have to change something, but I just have to keep going and keep going forward, keep aggressive. I thought you have to change, that's, I think, the mistake.

Q. You seemed to struggle with your serve at times. Was this something that you feel let you down today?

RIKA FUJIWARA: Exactly. I was struggling from qualification as well, but I think I need to work on it.
