Does Sharapova know what her ranking is? She's entering tournaments like she is ranked in the thirties and fourties and not the top ten.

That rule is total bullshit.

2004 - Shaughnessy played Sydney, instead of Canberra.

2003 - Kuznetsova played LA instead of Helsinki last year, and didn't seem forced to play Bali. Bovina entered Philly during Quebec week.

c. First Time Champions
First Time Champions are required to make best efforts to defend their titles at Tournaments won the year prior (subject to the Play Down Rule). This provision applies to all players, not only Gold Exempt players. If a player is a
First Time Champion at more than one event, she is required to make best efforts to defend a maximum of two titles. Gold Exempt players are not required to make best efforts to defend their Tier IV or V titles or Tier III titles that are not part of their minimum commitment requirement to
the Tour. If a Tournament changes its location or week from the year prior, a player is not obligated to make best efforts to defend her first time title.

Not really as BS as one thinks. They do have to defend, Kim follows the rules quite well as she always has been:). But Maria didnt have to play here since she could play high tiers, she probably just wants to come back and make an appearance;).

This must be a mistake, Ai always plays here. She alsways chooses this tournament.

I know the rule is there...

But like I said, in the few occasions that a player has raised high enough the next year, where they directly qualified for the higher ranked tournament... they've mostly ignored the rule, since 2001.

The point is that if Maria said, "I want to play Filderstadt." She'd be playing Filderstadt.

Ai should play in her native country rather than Germany. She has far more fans in Japan, and besides, chances are she might make it further in Tokyo than in Filderstadt.

Meghann Shaughnessy won her first title at Shanghai in 2000 and didn't returns in the following year. Also, she don't even came to defend all of her titles at Quebec City and Canberra!

What Goldenslam said is RIGHT.
Maria does not have to make the appearance in Japan Opne plus she is top 10 player now...
If she makes it there...it is great....there is unwritten rule that most of top 15 players get appearance fee....I wish WTA just legalizes it...this si totally BS....all ATP Player can accept the appearance fee, so why not WTA...the WTA players will get it anyway....

From a few years ago, Ai decided to skip this Japan Open to attempt to gain more possible points, and also be ready for the European indoor tournaments.

Esp. last year, she was close to the YEC tourney.
Also, she mentioned that the German tournament is awesome!
