Refreshed Davenport back in action
She returns for U.S. Open buildup after 14 straight
victories, three tourney titles, two weeks off

MASON, Ohio - Lindsay Davenport sounds absolutely refreshed about tennis.

She had hinted she might not return to Wimbledon after a loss in the semifinals in July. When she arrived in Cincinnati, however, her mood had changed dramatically. After taking two weeks off, she’s ready to go.

“This is my favorite time of the year to play — summer in the United States,” Davenport said Wednesday at the Western and Southern Women’s Open. “I want to keep the roll going that I’ve built, and this is my best surface.”

Davenport has won 14 consecutive matches and three straight tournaments since losing to eventual champion Maria Sharapova in the Wimbledon semifinals. After that match, when asked how many times she might be returning to Wimbledon, davenport replied, “I’d be surprised if I was back.”

“I think that was blown out of proportion a little bit,” Davenport said. “I’m 28 and I’ve been playing (professionally) since I was 15. I’ve had a long amazing career. A lot depends on my health.”

The WTA’s fourth-ranked player is seeded first in the Ohio tournament and is to play No. 137 Lilia Osterloh in the round of 16 Thursday night.

whatever... just step up and win the USOpen then, that's all that counts, none of these little feel-good press articles, none of the pre-tournament talk of Linzy as the favorite, means anything. The 2004 USO title, on the other hand, means a lot.

Personally, I hope that Lindsay wins the US Open and calls it a career. She could be one of a very select few to retire as #1 and a GS title winner. But, whatever she chooses is the right decision for her.

Why retire with 4 Slams (which would be the case if she wins the USO), when you can go on to win 5 or more? ;)

True, but not likely IMO. I think next year is going to be incredibly competitive, and there are too many younger and hungrier players.

I think that Lindsay will retire - like she says - at the end of the year - she will win the US Open and do well in the indoor season and get to the YEC before retiring on a high.

She may come back in a few years to do a "Martina" and take part in doubles events i America - i think people forget what a great doubles player she was - #1 and 35 doubles titles - so even if she does retire we probably haven't seen the last of her yet.
