Navratilova, Raymond into quarters on walkover

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Martina Navratilova and Lisa Raymond moved into the Olympic quarterfinals without hitting a shot Wednesday when Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce of France withdrew from the doubles tournament.

Mauresmo said she couldn't play because she broke out with a rash from a skin allergy during a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 16 Chanda Rubin of the United States earlier Wednesday.

Navratilova is playing in her first Olympics at age 47.

What abour Le Lie?

I don't buy this at all:o . She knows she has a great chance now at winning a gold medal so she just decided not to play doubles. I might be wrong, but if this rash doesn't heal and she plays singles tomorrow, then I'll be right.

ok you have to admit that 'acute rib injury' is a much better lie than 'rash from skin allergy'

You don't come down with a rash during a match!

You could do, if you were allergic to a new material you were wearing, or to a skin cream you'd put on.

But yes, it's probably bollocks - both Mary and Amelie no doubt are hugely excited about their singles chances. I'm not complaining though, as Navratilova and Raymond are in the QFs :)

Eleni is playing inspired nnis right now in front of her Greek crowd. Good for her. :D

Meanwhile, I doubt Mauresmo is lying about the rash. Seriously though, if you were faking/making up an injury of some sort, why would you come up with "rash"? It sounds so unbelievable. And I don't understand why she would want to pull out of dubs since her and Mary had a good chance to Medal here.

I honestly don't get how a rash is going to inhibit her playing. Maybe if it was all over the palms of her hands or the bottom of her feet it could affect her but I've never seen a rash form in those areas.

i dun think so.

in montreal, momo played both singles and doubles. remember how her first 3 matches went to 3 sets and so does the double match. If it's all about saving energy, it's BS. Momo is patriotic type too, so I doubt she forfeit the double match because of single. I just hope that it'snot serious. NOT AT THE MOMENT when a medal and a Slam are soooooooo close.

Here's the post-match interview:

Q. Amelie, that was a good win. You were ahead from the beginning. Happy with that?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah, very soon in that first set I was able to break her and that made it a little easier for me. Yeah, I was feeling very comfortable on the court again. Just the way I played in my first two matches, you know, taking control and I really was focusing on the big points.

It went well.

Q. During the match, you picked up a rash of some sort. What is that about, a skin problem?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah. I don't know really how to say in English, but I had some eruptions of rash or hives. I don't know how you say. Yeah, skin problem. I had that a couple days ago in warm‑up before my doubles match. Today in that second set, I couldn't really focus on what I had to do.

But, you know, I think everything is going to be fine tonight and better tomorrow.

Q. You pulled out of the doubles.

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah.

Q. But I assume this won't affect your singles?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah, I really was in a big crisis after the singles, not being able to go back out there on the court and play the doubles. But, you know, again, I have tonight and the rest of the day for tomorrow to recover before the evening session. So hopefully it will be fine.

Doesn't sound too serious.

I believe Momo but they should have said a little more to make sense. How could she break out in a rash playing Chanda? Is she allergic to Chanda, Americans, the court, greeks in the crowed, her racket or her clothes? If its the court how can she withdraw from doubles but not singles? The only sane explanation is that she has a rash somewhere painful which rubs or she has it on her hands.

Lots of cream and antihistamines if allowed? Hives come out as a response to stress though so you hope its not her nerves reacting to becoming a favourite.

Hmmm...as much as I love Momo, the rash excuse sounds kind of lame imo....and this is from someone who has had suffered from skin allergy for over a year. Both piriton and fexofenadine could stop most common allergic skin reactions.

Besides, as long as it's not itchy as hell (in which case medicine works relatively quickly), I can't see what could stop her from playing tennis - I certainly got on with my daily life and played sports as usual. Just a couple of anti-histamine tablets would prevent rash occurence for at least a day.

Why not just say 'Oh, Mary and I want to concentrate on our single matches as there are real good chance for France to win a medal or two.'

That would have been more cool.

This thread is hilarious.

I really don't think she could be making this up- it's so weird it's almost funny, and Amélie is not stupid. And if she and Mary were planning to throw away doubles at any sign of doing well in singles, I don't think they would have played in the first place. Amélie came in a medal favourite. It couldn't have dawned on her suddenly that she might win this thing. I suspect, however, she wants to win the singles badly enough that she's trying to take every precaution, and if she has a rash on her hands or somewhere where it rubs, she's not going to risk making it worse.

Something like that can be very disruptive. I got a blister on the palm of my hand Saturday and for three days I really could not hit a forehand. It was very irritating. I don't think this is as silly as some of you

If she had a blister, then most of us wouldn't accuse her of lying because tht could affect her play. The fact that no one has elaborated on where this supposed rash is leads to suspicion.

I used to compete in triathlon and marathon. And few of times I experienced a rash problem and a couple of times it got so bad that I couldn't continue my race. When I consulted a doctor about this he said that heat, sun and sweating usually cause these problems if temperatures arise over 30C°/90F°.
Both those times I had to quit, the temperatures were higher than I just mentioned. It can become even more problematic when a wrong type of sun lotion is applied for skin. Anyone having rash problems due to sun, heat and sweat should carefully choose the right type of lotion according to their skin type and the humidity of the air.

In triathlon most of the sun lotion is washed away in the first swimming part but it's place with another problem; sun, sweat, heath, salty skin and the left over of the sun lotion that can change its formula when in contact with a salty water.

Lizchris, I was making the point that some little injury that seems minor can actually be pretty inhibiting and bothersome. And it's not Amélie's fault Yahoo has a habit of writing four-sentence articles.

But I do find it disturbing how you seem to look for opportunities to condemn or insult Amélie. Did she beat up your sister or something? If she didn't, my view is that you're a little obsessed, and it's not healthy.

I am happy, Lisa and Martina didn`t have to play versus Mary and Amélie. Hope, Amélie gets well soon to play her singles matches but I think she and Mary would have beaten the US girls. I know Martina and Cara Black defeated the French girls in Filderstadt and I am sure Lisa is a better doubles player than Cara but it is good for Lisa and Martina not to play Mary and Amélie.

They were both supposed to play Lisa and Martina, a team honestly they had a good chance of beating. Amelie is 25; Mary is 29; neither may have the chance to play in Bejing in 2008 or in 2012 and I find it hard to believe that a rash would keep someone from attempting to win a medal.

Good Luck to Martina/Lisa the rest of the event :) but I think that was a lucky escape for them. I know Amelie and Mary are not a regular team, but if they were both fit I think they could have had the firepower to win. Both Amelie and Mary are clearly in great form so I think Martina and Lisa will be quietly relieved. I have seen Martina/Lisa a few times this year and although they are great players, they are not as good a team as Lisa/Rennae or Martina/Sveta. With the top seeds Kuznetsova/Likhovtseva going out to Dechy/Testud I think Martina and Lisa has a better chance although I think the teams to watch are Molik/Stubbs and darkhorses Sugiyama/Asagoe.

Why should I change? I like Venus and Serena (Venus a little more) and suport them. I do wish that Venus start working with a new coach.

Who told you to change? When you post something in a PUBLIC messageboard, you must expect people to disagree with you, big deal.
Exactly. So take you own advice.

I'm not a little punk ass in my real life. And I don't act like a "rude boi" to hide my homosexuality as well.

Why oh why do you always miss the point??? I'm sure the injury is fake too, this isn't the point.
And you didn't get the point I made earlier; obvisouly a singles medal is much better than a doubles medal, but a medal is a medal at the Olympics. She may not have the chance to win in doubles again.

Cam'ron Giles
Aug 18th, 2004, 11:02 PM
So what lol... She's not a double specialist, she won't lose sleep over not having the chance to win in double when she can win it in single.

Anyway I'm off, see you tomorrow for another fight, with Cam and Liz. :hearts:
Dont forget your medz...:wavey:

and it is her decision, whether the injury was faked or not.
She shouldn't be criticized for it. .

The topic really was that Amelie/Mauresmo withdrew from doubles because of Aemlie's supposed rash. How it got to what it got to is anyone's guess, but not my fault.

I find it disturbing that you find it disturbing that I- okay, that'sa little much for my fuzzy mind.

I'm not talking about this one thread, lizchris. You bash Amélie at any opportunity, and I think that's incredibly out of proportion to one injudicious comment she made two years ago. It doesn't amtter how many people bash the Williamses- sinking to their level only escalates this. And even if Amélie has been a complete drama queen about a tiny thing, which I don't think she has, she'd be following in the footsteps of an amazing number of people who drop doubles very easily. I may not have read every thread on this board, but I haven't noticed any threads like this by you about these myraid others.

Get better, Momo. I hope they can clear this up quickly.

Obviously lizchris has never suffered a painful, debilitating skin rash. Given how polluted the air is in Athens, I'm surprised that more athletes who are not used to it are not coming down with strange minor illnesses, etc. I did when I was there.

that's true. MYself, I once got a pretty decent rash from the sun or whatever at the beach. Let's just say that it hurt... a lot. :scared:

I forgot to read the third page.

It was pretty funny and bent logic as I know it. People, you can't have it both ways. Of course lizchris can say whatever she wants. It's called free speech. But this also extends to the rights of others to disagree with her. "Leave her alone" doesn't cut it. If people think what she says is offensive and they speak up, and they're picking on her, why aren't the same people suggesting she leave Amélie alone? I don't get it.

And the "you're just talking like that to cover up your homosexuality" and the Canadian-bashing is just pathetic. I feel both amused and disgusted.

I think Amélie should send a doctor's report to lizchris, diagnosing the skin problem to satisfy the curiousty lizchris has with Amélie's health.

If she had a blister, then most of us wouldn't accuse her of lying because tht could affect her play.

hahaha...lizchris, even if Momo had a broken leg you would say that she was lying! :p

You didn't start this thread to give us all the 'latest news' - you only started this thread to have another dig at Amélie!

Personally, I'm starting to think lizchris is a secret Momo fan! :p She only starts these Momo-bashing threads to make people think she doesn't like her, when secretly she is totally obsessed with Amélie! hahaha

I've already been there with lizchris  , she was a momo fan but momo made some silly comment 2 years ago about the Williams sisters, she was just saying what most of the tennis players where thinking at that time, but anyway lizchris does not bear a grudge but she has not forgotten. :)
