I said if Venus made too many errors, she would lose and I unfortunately was right. If she is smart, she'll take a wild card and play at New Haven because if she plays the USO the way she played toay, she won't get past the third round.

someone needs to fax venus her match results for the past year, maybe she needs to see it on paper for it to sink it :smash:

LOL! I suspected this might happen too! Well done, mary - I always figured, if she can maul steffi 2 & 2 in grand slam, why would she ever be afraid of facing ANYONE?
Moreover, does anyone feel like venus wasn't quite ready to face henin - and took the easy option? Only she knows....whatever the reasons, this is another HUGE blow for the williams sisters. not to mention the USA.

well the thing is Venus has failed to bring her game when it matters....except on clay.

However I think if she can stay healthy for 5 minutes she'll be fine.
We are quick to forget that she was playing this tournament wrapped like a mummy, and just had to retire the other week. Once Venus can stay healthy and get that won big win, she'll be good to go.

I still have faith in V

But boy has this tournament been ripe with upsets all over the place.

Roger, Andy, and now Venus all gone :(

Everyone was all excited because Venus got a double bagel off a girl playing her second match in at least a year after injuries. I think Maja is a great girl and all, but I would be shocked if most of the field couldn't double bagel her in her current form. Mary is one of the most dangerous players on the tour. Sure, she can stink up the place on any given day, but she can also demolish ANYONE on any given day. I just hope she keeps it going past JHH and gets a medal now. C'mon Meryl!

No one is. It's not an excuse in anyway because if you go out there to play there are no excuses you do what you have to do. But the only long span of time Venus has been completely injury free she won 2 titles in a row and got to the final of the other. She's been having all these little nagging injuries that maybe aren't serious, but are disrupting her training regularly. It happened to Henin Hardenne at the French, she wasn't able to train regularly before and so she lost early. That is probably what has taken Justine so long to come back. Not so much as it has still been bothering her, but that she wanted to get back training to full speed to give herself the best possible chance, and I'm sure the fact that her number one ranking being in danger is motivation too. :) Good job Mary, you took it to her and deserved the win. Better luck next time Venus. Your true fans still love you :worship:

no in that match she made 44, 43 something like that errors.
I think the last time she made that many errors in 2 sets was actually at the French in 2002 with 54 or so.

Liz you also said the only thing Mary has an advantage over Venus is net play. Unless Mary was serve volleying or coming to net on every point, maybe that's not her only advantage over Venus these days - in the past maybe, not now. That Mary Pierce was more consistent than Venus is a shock as Mary is so hit and miss these days. I guess we can add consistency to net play.

I am surprised at this but happy for Mary. I am surprised because I thought Venus was in good form in the doubles match I saw her in - in fact she practically single handedly kept that match anywhere near close.

Allez Mary!  I knew you could do better against Venus then you showed on Chatrier when you lost 3 and 1, spraying balls into the stands.

This is a great win for Mary and gives her a legitimate shot to Medal. Justine surely can't be back at her best just yet, so I give Mary much more of a chance to win tomorrow then she has had in past meetings against the Belgian. If her shots are finding the court, she'll pummel Juju. :D

Good on ya, Mary! Nice to see you string together two quality wins in a row. I think she has a chance at a medal, if she keeps playing like this! :)
Justine will beat her.

BTW, this is her only chance of winning a medal because she and Amelie are out of the doubles competition.

I was looking forward to venus & Justin quater-finals all week, but it will not happen US OPEN next for venus, I don't think Mary will beat Justin why Venus lost her UF errors and not moving mary around on the court, Justine will do that..............and venus don't need to get another coach from know on everything is all up to venus either win or lose.......when you think of it venus has everything!! Mary on the other hand don't have what venus has so this is a very good win for Mary!!

Venus needs a reality check.

Coach baby, a coach. *hint hint*

I dunno, you'd think with all of these bad losses that Venus would get the hint. I mean, one or two, no big deal. She always gives away stupid losses. This year, however, I honestly believe that every loss was a stupid loss, and not because the other player was just too good. All of her losses this year were from her own undoing and her own errors, minus Kuznetsova, which I didn't see.

Why should it matter to you? Or anyone else for that matter? Last time I checked, it wasn't my prerogative to follow your guidelines on what a fan or a hater was.

I've gotten over the fact that you're a Serena hater/antagonist a long time ago, I don't even react anymore when you disparage her. Please, do the same with me regarding Venus. Thanks.

You know, putting me on your ignore list would be superb! http://wtaworld.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Please do!

I'm not a Serena hater. People tend to grow up and mature and realize that tennis is a sport. There's no sense is making battles of something you can't change. I fail to understand why people just don't enjoy the sport for what it is...a sport.

And obviously if you were on my ignore list, I wouldn't be able to respond to your posts. ;)

Williams, Roddick dropped in third-round play

By David DuPree, USA TODAY
ATHENS — The USA's top tennis players, Andy Roddick and Venus Williams, considered gold medal contenders, Wednesday were ousted in the third round in straight sets.
http://*********************/_common/_images/clear.gifhttp://*********************/sports/_photos/2004/08/18/inside2-tennis-williams.jpghttp://*********************/_common/_images/clear.gifSixth-seeded Venus Williams reacts after a service fault late in her unsuccessful third round match.http://*********************/_common/_images/clear.gifBy Elise Amendola, AP

Second-seeded Roddick appeared to be on a easy road to the gold, especially after top-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland was ousted on Tuesday. But Roddick proved to be no match for Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, falling 6-4, 6-4.

Roddick, whose game is built around his serve, had 13 aces, but he was broken once in each set and never broke Gonzalez, the 16th seed.

"I'm gutted right now. It's not everyday we get to play in the Olympics," a dejected Roddick said. "You can't say 'next year.' It's tough to lose, but that's part of it. It was still a great experience."

Williams also had trouble with her serve in losing to unseeded Mary Pierce of France, 6-4, 6-4.

Williams had her normally reliable serve broken twice in each set and committed 51 unforced errors. She never got in a groove and played from behind in practically every game against the very patient Pierce.

At 4-4 in the second set, Williams had a break point against Pierce, but wasted it with a backhand into the net, lost the next point with a forehand wide and then lost the game with another backhand error. The poised Pierce then broke Williams to win the match. Williams double-faulted on match point.

Williams was not very talkative afterwards as she was in near tears. She felt she had a good chance to win her second singles gold medal. She won gold in both singles and doubles, with her sister Serena, at the 2000 Olympics. Serena pulled out of the Athens Games at the last minute with a knee injury. That left Williams to play doubles with Chanda Rubin. It was the first time they played together and they lost in the first round.

"Obviously I would have liked to have won the title," Williams said after her match with Pierce. "But all I can do now is learn from my mistakes. It was definitely worthwhile to come here, it just didn't end the way I had hoped it would."

Coming off a 6-0, 6-0, 39-minute romp Tuesday against Maja Matevzic, Williams was starting to look like the player to beat in the women's draw. That was all changed by the unseeded Pierce, who is ranked 28th in the world.

Pierce never got rattled and buckled down on the big points, mixing in timely drop shots with blistering down the line forehands that had Williams off balance.

"She served well and she played some good points at the right times," Williams said.

Next up for the professional tennis players is the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 30 in New York. But that wasn't what was on Roddick's mind. He said he wanted to win an Olympic gold medal just as much as he wants to win grand slams.

"This is tough," he said. "I think with each player it's personal as to how big it is. Some guys don't really care that much. I cared a lot. Winning a gold medal at the Olympics isn't the biggest thing in our sport, but it's the biggest thing in sports."

Does anyone remember when Pam Shriver talked to Richard Williams during the finals of the 2002 U.S.Open. Richard was very irritated with Venus because she was continuely falling back on her shots and not advancing into the court with her shots. Richard said something like "Venus needs to stop falling of her shots or she's is going to be the hell out of this match soon" How right has Richard been. Whenever Venus has been in a tight match she has gotten tentative and fallen of her shots. Look at today's match in the 4-3 game in the second. She fell of a backhand on the first point and then a forehand to give Mary break points. Venus's problem is mental. In the begining of the second, she was moving Pierce around and hitting winners, and at the end Venus got very defensive and fell off her shots. That is the reason she can't close out or win matches. She isn't confident enough to hit hard shots and dictate play when it gets close. That is her problem. Her forehand works when she is hitting it, but when she is pressed on it, that's when errors start up.

Not to mention Venus looked irritated and angry on the court the whole match. i swear that she might have thrown her racket. Venus was doubting her backhand as well. Anyway, I hope she gets this reality check and finds a new coach soon!!

Venus :crying2:

I do think a new coach might be able to help her out. Just the whole idea of a fresh and different perspective (maybe someone could convince her to come to net a bit more like she was doing at Charleston (or was it Warsaw?)... ;)). The little injuries will always be a factor, but Venus just has to gain enough confidence and mental strength to keep hitting out on the big points - playing passive tennis won't cut it. I didn't see the match, but when she's in-form, Mary is so lethal off the ground that you have to take it to her and move her around.

Come back with a good showing at the US Open, Venus. Losses to champions like Mary aren't the end of the world... Considering the long injury layoff and improving depth in the game, this hasn't been a completely unsuccessful season - being top 8 in points earned is nothing to sneeze at. But you'll need to work on your game and improve if you want to make it back to the very top.

Also, congratulations to Mary. She can definitely still hit the ball with the best of them. If she works on her fitness/movement and becomes a little more consistent, I think she could easily be at least a top 20 player again. :)
