The HOF thread got me thinking -- How would you rank these players who started playing after Evert and Navratilova had started and before Hingis and Davenport came on the scene (excluding Graf and Seles...I've had enough of that discussion):

Capriati
Mary Pierce
Conchita Martinez
Sabatini
Novotna
ASV
Tracy Austin
Pam Shriver

(looking just at singles)

Hmmm...I like #1-5, with Austin not having longevity but with her likely being able to beat #2-#5 at her best. I also like Pam at #8. But how can you put Jana below Conchita?

1. ASV/Tracy Austin (ASV has more career accomplishments but Austin's career ended prematurely. If Austin played a few more years, she would be number one no doubt.)
3. Capriati
4. Pierce
5. Sabatini
6. Martinez
7. Novotna
8. Shriver

So, now a few people have put Conchita ahead of Jana. Let's compare:

Top 10s:

Martinez: 1989, 1991, 1992, 1998 (4)
Novotna: 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997 1998 (7)

Top 5s:

Martinez: 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000 (5)
Novotna: 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998 (4)

GSs:

Martinez: 1
Novotna: 1

GS Finals (losses):

Martinez: 1
Novotna: 3

Head-to-Head: 4-1 Novotna (all on fast surfaces)

GS winning %:

Martinez: 74.7%
Novotna: 75%

Winning %:

Martinez: 71.2%
Novotna: 71.6%

Titles:

Martinez: 32
Novotna: 24

Wow, it's actually much closer than I expected. I would give Novotna the slight edge based on these #s, but then you have to factor in Fed Cup for Martinez.

Arantxa was both had longevity, good play, and won tournies. She is not one of my favorites...but she deserves to be 2nd, Austin is legendary (Again I don't really her)

Paw at the bottom was easy.

The rest was a little difficult. Conchi has won a great deal, just not any G slams other than Wimby. She was actually in 3 GS finals and has won titles on all surfaces. She is only surpassed by 5 others in terms of wins, which speaks to her longevity.

Sabatini was indeed good, but did not play for a long time, this hurts her in the ranking IMO. Novotna was not naturally talented, but worked hard at her game, and she does not match either Pierce or Capriati in terms of success.

I think Capriati is the most overrated player. Her game is one of power, and very little finesse. Her career can be divided into two stages, almost two different people.

Pierce is good, but is VERY streaky. At times she plays poorly, other times she is unbeatable.

Cool Conchi, I understand that you are biased, but three grandslams and no. 1 in the world beats 1 grand slam and no. 2 in the world. Sorry, you can't make a legit. argument that Martinez has had a better career than Capriati.

"Sabatini was indeed good, but did not play for a long time, this hurts her in the ranking IMO."

Didn't play for a long time? She played from 1984-1996 (13 years). And for 10 straight years (1986-1995), she was in the top 10.
