It might be confusing to see Russians doing so well on clay, but clay is where the power of the sisters is absorbed. You are wrong to count her out. With a serve, she can win a lot more.

1. It was on clay, where her serve hurts her the least.

2. Her 1st 2 opponents were terrible.

3. Smashnova was crushing her in round 3 before getting hurt.

4. Davenport (R16 opponent) never plays well on clay and was not 100%.

5. Mauresmo (QF opponent) always chokes.

6. Suarez choked even more than Mauresmo in the SF.

How the hell could Sharapova win Wimbledon?

The easy answer is that both, Elena and Masha had two really good weeks, are both brilliant players and in those two weeks only one person was better and in Masha´s case she was the top player of those two weeks...that´s it.

And I don't want to diminish what Dementieva did. They say luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Sure, she didn't play the greatest clay court, Grand Slam opponents. But she did beat them all, which doesn't always happen when a player gets easy draws.

Dementieva is #6 in the world. She also reached the Key Biscayne final. And made the semis in San Diego and L.A.

simply, dementieva has some of the best groundstrokes in tennis and fights very hard for all the points.

In all honesty, though, I might have to say that her run to the finals was just about the most surprising such run that I can remember. What was she?...6-5 at the French before this year, losing in the 1st round last year? And then she came into the French, having gone 2-4 in French Open warm-ups.

If Elena ever rebuilds her serve and makes it on a par with the rest of her game she will be in another slam final or two. But right now Elena is so beaten down psychologically by all the questions about her serve that it's negatively affecting her normally vibrant game. We all know how devastated she was after her play in the French Open final. :( But this was even worse because it's the Olympics and Elena lost in the first round and not the final. And the Olympics was her top priority for this year so Elena is probably even more devastated than when she lost meekly in the French Open final. :sad:
