This is what her schedule will most likely be
Hopman Cup*
Australian Open*
Tokyo (Pan Pacific)*
Paris Indoors*
Memphis
Indian Wells
Miami
Amelia Island
Charleston
Monica has committed to Tokyo and Paris after OZ. I assume she will play in Memphis since she is the defending champion. If Monica is smart she'll skip Scottsdale (which she has played the last few years) and rest up for the Tier 1s and clay season. I see no reason for Monica to play so much when she has none to defend from March-Roland Garros. Roland Garros because that is most likely the tournament she'll want to get the higher seeding for. I don't want Monica to aggrevate her foot problem(s) anymore.

I think you have the answer in your post, GoMonica
She needs points for a high seeding at the French.
Everything she gets is added on, while from Hingis on down the other women are potentially vulnerable to slide down the computer.
Don't be surprised if Monica doesn't play anything except Asia after the US Open in 2002 too. Munich means nothing, because she has no intention of showing up there. Maybe Monica figures the early
season is her best chance at big points.
I was excited when she appeared noticeably thinner last summer. If she can pull a "Capriati" and win the Aussie in a shock, Seles is good enough to ride a tidal wave just like Jen did in 2001. It all comes down to fitness and confidence.

Mabye she wont play Memphis cos the tourney moved from Oklahoma and she might miss Scotsdale and play in the other idoor tier 2in europe aswell!

How about Dubai? She may like a chance to go to
the Middle East. I share your worry about Monica overdoing it. Better for her to drop an event if she's exhausted than play herself into the ground.
It's interesting to me that she's not in Sydney.
Guess she's using that week to practice.

Her not playing Sydney interests me as well.
I can only assume that she wants to practice and also to rest - she was playing doubles and singles in Sydney and Oz last year and was completely tired out by Henin before Capriati overwhelmed her.
Perhaps this year she wants to put up a better fight.

I bet Monica will skip Memphis this year and opt for Sarasota after Key Biscane, because both are lower-tiered events.

Sounds like a good plan to me VSFAN1.
Monica has always done well down under(like Hingis) hasn't she Kart. IMO she's doing the right thing taking a pass on Sydney.

Monica has indeed played well down under Rollo , with a record in Australia of 47-4 (excluding Hopman cup).
I was hoping she would play Sydney so we could gauge her form, but seeing that she's playing Tokyo almost a week after Australian open, I think it's probably the right decision to give it a miss.

Is she entering that Hong Kong exhibition for hard court practice?

VSFan, why would Seles play a Tier IV clay event? I think she should take a break after Miami. Its really not necessary for her to play Sarasota. Plus, its a Tier IV and I want someone to win that event rather than the usual suspects!
