Just looked up the Pilot Pen tournament website, which is at: http://www.pilotpentennis.com
...and surprise, surprise Maria is pictured on the front page of the site along with the words 'Maria Mania'.

So only 12 or so days to go now until Maria's back playing.

The line up includes:

Elena Bovina
Lindsay Davenport
Nathalie Dechy
Elena Dementieva
Jelena Dokic
Tatiana Golovin
Daniela Hantuchova
Jelena Kostanic
Magdalena Maleeva
Alicia Molik

Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi
Karolina Sprem
Paola Suarez
Ai Sugiyama
Tina Pisnik

Davenport and Lena D are shaping as Maria's biggest hurdles though theres more than a few players there who could pose some problems.

Hopefully theyve got some kind of live scoreboard on that website so we can follow the matches!! :tennis:

Jennifer Capriati has just confirmed she will compete to defend her title now that she is no longer playing in the Olympics.

Jennifer Capriati has just confirmed she will compete to defend her title now that she is no longer playing in the Olympics.

Wrong forum...

Andy.
Aug 12th, 2004, 03:08 AM
Now that Capriati is playing she could pose as another threat to the title. although Capriati has been injured and not in good form of late. I definatly see a semi final appearence and if she can play well a final of even a win is possible.

Jennifer Capriati has just confirmed she will compete to defend her title now that she is no longer playing in the Olympics.

The title specifically says "Supernova Sharapova"

Dan23
Aug 12th, 2004, 03:26 AM
The title specifically says "Supernova Sharapova"
Yeah but that info from Elion is relevant to Maria as well, as Capriati is a potential opponent in this tournament which makes it a bit tougher.

BTW thanks for the plug Andy :yeah: and I will be posting more commentaries

Pilot Pen, the sponsors don't care who plays, as long as their nam is mentioned now and again.

It will be good if Maria can get in a few matches with the older players before they are forced into retirement.

Andy Mac
Aug 12th, 2004, 07:11 PM
yea i am a fan of capraiti cept why are we talking about hger in a maria forum...taht idoit newbie started it!

I read something about them telling Maria to mention their name in an interview and when she did they were jumping up and down :yippee:

Edward.

I think Maria will do well at this tournament. She will put the disappointment of the previous two tournies behind her.

Andy Mac
Aug 14th, 2004, 02:48 PM
i wouldnt say dissipointment eddy..i mean she didnt win em but she didnt do bad in them!

Edward.
Aug 14th, 2004, 03:13 PM
She should have beaten Vera and Nastya. She will feel disappointed that she did not progress further after winning the biggest tennis tournament in the world.

Andy Mac
Aug 14th, 2004, 03:49 PM
ah..ok well when u say it like that then yes..i am also dissipointed now! *sad*

Dan23

Yeah, hopefully the couple of weeks off with a bit more peace and quiet than Maria has been getting since Wimby, has done her some good.

Elldee
Aug 15th, 2004, 03:40 PM
I hope she makes it to the final to show that Wimbledon wasn't a fluke. I don't think Capriati will pose a problem, but Davenport will probably beat her in the final.

Yes, with the astonishing streak of form Lindsay is in right now, Maria would find it an almost overwhelming task.

Davenport is out of Pilot Pen...

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=1865771

This seriously increases Maria's chances of a Tier II victory...

Edward.
Aug 23rd, 2004, 06:04 PM
Lindsay's withdrawalis surprising. She is in awesome form. I'd have thought she would wanna try and sustain it.

But yes, Maria does have a great chance now. There are no players who stand out as being a huge obstacle.

Will her seeding go up now, or will it remain the same?

Frank
Aug 23rd, 2004, 06:08 PM
I think her seeding will go up with one now...At least that sounds logical to me...Lena D and J Cap are Maria's biggest threats now...

Edward.
Aug 23rd, 2004, 06:10 PM
J Cap is in terrible form right now.

Lena D has lost the last two matches she has played to Maria and her form is not too great either.

A victory for Maria at this tournament will give Maria great optimism for the US Open.

Frank
Aug 23rd, 2004, 06:14 PM
Yep...And her critics a field day because they can say how weak the field of this tournament was...

Hantuchova/Safina def. Sharapova/Kirilenko 7-6(9) 6-3

I must say, I am a little shocked.
Yes thats is a little disappointing for Team Masha...
But at least there is a positive, as it now leaves Maria S to focus completely on the singles.

Edward.

Masha is 2-0 up on Mashona Washington in head to head matchups. If she takes care of business, she should win this.

Too bad we don't have any TV coverage, as Star Sports in Asia only covers the men's tour most of the time, plus only Wimbledon and US Open for the Grand Slams. :(

Andy.
Aug 24th, 2004, 05:33 AM
Mashona is basically a powerfull baseliner with not a lot of variety is she not. these are the types of players Maria likes so she can get into her rhythem, so this should be a good match for her. Good Luck Masha.

Dan23, you are being very pesemistic.
Nah I dont think so. :)
Maria hasnt played a hell of a lot of tennis lately so she may start off a little rusty and then really get cracking and power through the 2nd set.
Thats just how I see it, Maria tends to start slowly occasionly and then really fire up as the match goes on.

Smithy
Aug 24th, 2004, 11:16 AM
I hope Maria wins comfortably. I mean she did it against dulko 6-0 6-1 and Dulko is prob better than washington. Anyway as long its a 2 set win i guess its ok.

Yeah she lost and just got broken in 2nd set. How do you know? What's wrong with her? Does she have a broken leg but doesn't want to tell or something?

i think he is winding up

Evidence: "Maria led 2-0 with a break and Mashona just broke back to 2-1 on serve"

"2-3 Mashona on serve"

Surely if mashona broke in 3rd game, means maria serves each odd game. 2-3 Mashona on serve means mashona served at 2-2 to take 3-2 lead which is an odd game.

correct me if im wrong?!?

Frickin' Pilot Pen website!

If they just would have been so kind to put a live scoreboard there...Then we wouldn't have all the confusion right now and my heart would be a lot more relaxed right now!

4-2 to Maria....apparently

Edward.
Aug 25th, 2004, 12:25 AM
I'm dying here! I need a conclusive score!

By the way- is it normal for people to directly ring up Pilot Pen (or any tourny for that matter) and ask for scores? I have never heard of that before....

Frank
Aug 25th, 2004, 12:27 AM
:bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce: I'm getting insane! Is it really that difficult for an organisation to put up a live scoreboard at their site?

I'm beginning to hope Maria loses...That tournament doesn't deserve a winner like Maria...She's too good for that shitty tournament...

Ok...I take that last thing back...

The guy who is posting the score on pilot pen thread isn't getting too excited in last 5 mins, so i think maria won 2nd set.

If Mashona comes back from a 4-2 defecit again, I think we can assume a very elaborate joke is going on.

And how can it be 4-2 to Maria now, when it was 3-2 to Mashona a few minutes ago?!

Dan23

How could this be possible after winning 6-2 in 2nd set?

Dan23
Aug 25th, 2004, 03:19 AM
Maria served 11 double faults for the match
3 of them in the 2 games in which she was broken in the final set.

"I can't be perfect all the time," Sharapova said of her serve. "I still have so many matches ahead of me where I want to improve.
It's all about learning, and at 17 [years old], I have a lot to learn."

Its a sign her confidence isnt very high at the moment.
She really needed a boost before the US Open but now she'll have to build up from scratch.
:)

Dan23
Aug 25th, 2004, 03:23 AM
More of what Maria had to say after the match:

"There wasn't a lot I could do today," world number seven Sharapova told reporters.
"Her serve was really on and she wasn't making many mistakes.

"I felt I had a bit of rhythm in the second set but made a few too many errors at the start of the third again."

"I'm just going to practice between now and New York and prepare as best as I can for there," Sharapova said.

"I don't feel the expectations on me, my only expectations are my own and I know I have a long way to go before I become the player I want to be."

It was just such a great match by washington, and according to her, it was just a fluke: "[I]Ithink every player has that one big win in them, and I was due for mine"- Mashona Washington

Man... She had a perfect grasscourt season but an awful hardcourt season...

...I really hope this upset, plus the #7 seeding at the US Open will spur her on to better results at the Open.

All champions have bad days. This was Maria's bad day.

Let us not forget that Washington played a great match too. All credit to her.

Maria needs to refocus and put this victory behind her. I am confident that with her strong mental attitude, she will be ready and firing at the US Open.

I just hope the night matches are kept to a minimum. Her record in night matches has been pretty bad.

Frank
Aug 25th, 2004, 11:51 AM
Losing a match because it's a night match can't be an excuse...She just have to learn to deal with that...

I agree...Credits to Washington...But Maria shouldn't lose from players ranked 81st...
