First of all, I had the pleasure of talking to Laura Granville's father for two hours. :) He's a great guy.
Okamoto d. Matic 46 62 64
Antonia continued to amaze me with her wonderful dropshots and great accuracy, but she lost her focus at the beginning of the 2nd set, and Seiko just continued that momentum through to the end. Seiko played really well again. She is just very consistent, and smart.
Garcia Sokol d. Rao 76 16 64
This was an exhausting match. It must have lasted more than 2 hours long. Vanina was stronger from the baseline, and was just a bit too good for Sunitha. I didn't see much of this match though.
Vaidisova d. Van Exel 63 63
Anousjka played really well, but she had troubles returning Nicole's serve. Nicole was just too strong from the baseline, and Anousjka's amazing slices didn't really affect Nicole much. Nicole is playing really, really well.
Karatantcheva d. Bachmann 67 63 60
I didn't see much of this match, but from what I saw, Sesil was completely overpowering Angelika.
Placement of Qualifiers
Okamoto v. Groenefeld
Garcia Sokol v. Jidkova
Vaidisova v. Spears
Karatantcheva v. Yoshida
1st Round
Granville d. Reeves 75 61
The first set lasted 1 hours and 20 minutes. Samantha behaves very badly on court - she even got a time violation. Laura's dad said that the reason why Laura is slumping this year, is that she can't handle competing in so many tournaments - so she will start to play around 22 to 24 tournaments next year.
Voskoboeva d. Arvidsson 62 64
Galina has nice variety - moonballs, slices when she is on the defense, and she can really smack the ball hard. Sofia though, didn't play very well. She is too slow, and IMO, she needs to lose a bit of weight.
Grande d. Callens 64 64
Rita played the same way as always - slices and moonballs. Els' backhand was absolutely awful. Her shots were off by a lot - and now I know why she has been doing so badly this year. Rita's quickness and patience, and consistency gave her the win.
Hopkins d. Foretz 63 64
This was the worst match of the day. Both players double-faulted so many times. Both players made so many mistakes. Jennifer won the big points better.
Sequera d. An. Serra-Zanetti 64 63
Milagros has a lovely game. She can create amazing angles. She attacked the net nicely as well. I was pleasantly surprised by how good she is. Antonella was also making too many unforced errors - not a good match for her.
