Olympics-Mauresmo sees gold as route to grand slam glory
Sat August 14, 2004 08:17 AM ET

By Bill Barclay

ATHENS, Aug 14 (Reuters) - France's Amelie Mauresmo believes the Olympics could be the key to her breaking her grand slam duck at the U.S. Open after the Games.

Mauresmo, the world number two, is the best player on the women's tennis tour never to have won one of the four grand slams and has a history of her nerves failing her on the big occasion.

"It would be magic. Anything can happen in 2004 and the Olympics could be the catalyst for a lot of things," the 25-year-old Mauresmo told reporters on Saturday, the day before the start of the tennis event in the Greek capital.

The U.S. Open, the final grand slam of the year, starts on August 30, a week after the end of the tennis tournament in Athens.

But Mauresmo believes a gold medal would have an even bigger impact back home than a grand slam title.

"Winning a grand slam goes down in the history of tennis," she said. "But winning an Olympic gold medal goes down in the history of sport itself.

"I was brought up in the culture of sport in general, not just tennis.

"I think the impact would be bigger for a Olympic gold medal than winning a grand slam in France. People can relate to gold medals more."

With top seed and world number one Justine Henin-Hardenne struggling for fitness, Mauresmo is probably the favourite for the gold, although she says she does not feel any special pressure.

"I can only take it match by match, especially with these (hot) conditions," she said. "The pressure doesn't come from being number one, two, three or four. All the matches are difficult these days. "I want to just go match by match and stay in the tournament. After that I'll be able to look at the other players and see how they are doing and how Justine is, as at the moment the level of her game and her form are unknown."

No doubt the gold medal is MoMo's for the taking. She has a tough first round against Conchita Martinez, who's well past her prime but can still pose a threat. None the less, I foresee nothing but the gold medal placed around Amelie's neck. How sweet is that! Nice pics too! She is definitely a hottie!

Linnie
Aug 18th, 2004, 06:56 PM
Posted this in GM, but worth posting here :):

Q. Amelie, that was a good win. You were ahead from the beginning. Happy with that?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah, very soon in that first set I was able to break her and that made it a little easier for me. Yeah, I was feeling very comfortable on the court again. Just the way I played in my first two matches, you know, taking control and I really was focusing on the big points.

It went well.

Q. During the match, you picked up a rash of some sort. What is that about, a skin problem?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah. I don't know really how to say in English, but I had some eruptions of rash or hives. I don't know how you say. Yeah, skin problem. I had that a couple days ago in warm‑up before my doubles match. Today in that second set, I couldn't really focus on what I had to do.

But, you know, I think everything is going to be fine tonight and better tomorrow.

Q. You pulled out of the doubles.

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah.

Q. But I assume this won't affect your singles?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah, I really was in a big crisis after the singles, not being able to go back out there on the court and play the doubles. But, you know, again, I have tonight and the rest of the day for tomorrow to recover before the evening session. So hopefully it will be fine.

A little antihistamine and a good night's sleep and she'll be good to go ;)

Svetlana's tough; I'm not at all surprised Amélie dropped a set, especially with her second set walkabouts she's wellknown for. I'm just pleased she was able to pick it up and pull through with a win.

Thanks for clearing that up Linnie and Sonja, they just kept cutting to Svetlana's group in the final set, Lina and the rest of the girls she has around her :) and then to ASV, so I thought ASV was supporting momo.
The funny thing was though at the start of the third set Svetlana went off to change, but she was wearing a white skirt and top and then came back in a tight red top, with no logo on it (the sort of top us gay guys wear) and a pair of white shorts, it was not a flattering look on her :) don't know if she has some sort supersticion, but it did not work she was knackered in that final set momo was just to strong.

Well, the Olympics do not mean anything to some dickhead players.
I'm glad that Momo's not one of 'em.
She just loves France.
It'll be an interesting final...

Fabulous photos,fabulous win!!!!
What time is the final played?

Personally I caN't respect players who don't care about Olympics as it should be the most important date for any ayhlete, tennis player or not.So yeah I'm super proud our Amélie has that big olympic passion and motivation for it.

Today was Justine's day but congrats momo on your medal, a medal of any colour at the olympics is fantastic.

Congrats on a great week, Momo. You could have done better though, but a silver is better than a bronze. :worship:

People expected you to lose since the first round, you proved them wrong. One freaking loss and thosand of posters have started thousand threads about it. Let's just be gracious and treat 'em like morons.

ALLEZ Momo.. Come back in US Open as a stronger player. It's a reality check time for Momo to think about the nervous breakdown in BIG final. It has got to go if she wants to win Grand Slam. And yes I'd be lying if I'm not upset about this :help:

I agree - she was strung tighter than her racquet today. She did well to reach the final, but once again her nerves got the better of her. IMHO, she has some serious work to do.

Now go and do one better at the Open. I'll be there rooting my ass off for you!

Haven't (and won't) be going to GM for the immediate future :bolt: ;)

Yeah she's getting a hard time in GM, but winning an Olympic medal is a great achievment for any athlete. They only put one game on the BBC highlights so I didn't get to see much and couldn't really see how she was playing:mad:
Anyway well done Amelie and good luck at the US Open
