Serena Williams Withdraws
August 1, 2004
The top seed of the Rogers Cup, American Serena Williams, announced her withdrawal from the Montreal event Sunday. She retired with a left knee injury during Friday's quarter-final at the Acura Classic in California. This is the same knee that required surgery in August of 2003, keeping her out of action for eight months. She hopes to regain her form in time to compete in singles and doubles with her sister Venus at the Olympic Games in Athens.

Not surprising....wise move. If it is hurting, better rest it.

Athletes work the best years ol their life just hoping to represent their country at the Olympics and u make comments like that.

If Serena and Venus do not show up at the Olympics they may aswell never walk on a tennis court again because they will be creating critics not fans.

Will the draw be re-done? Will Jenny get a break in her section now?

The draw has already been redone.

Myskina takes Serena's spot and somewhere in the draw, a lucky loser will take a spot, but not Myskina's.

If she was going to pull out, why did she have to say negative stuff about WTA :(.
I do want her to come, because I would love to see a Williams playing in Montreal. But I understand that she has to recover. I hope next year she can come too. It's fine if the Americans want to ignore Montreal that's fine, we'll just like Jennifer better than you girls:o. Hope she wins this time.....finally.....

It's the best thing for her injury right now.

Mary Pierce is now 17 and was moved out of Masha's section. Thankyou Rena for pulling out in time to give Myskina/Mary/Jenn the protection the deserve. :wavey:

not surprising...but what's more surprising is that she hasn't played a match in Canada since she won it in 2001 :o

that's cuz canada hasn't been kind to her.

in 00 she fucked up her foot while she was creaming martina  i remember that so well...i was in canada at the time and not really the biggest williams fan...a martina fan...and i loved Serena from that point forward :hearts:

I have one question to ask...now that Serena has withdrawn, is the WTA going to count Montreal as part of her 8-tournament special seeding?

I just want Vee and Serena to get healthy. They just need to rest up and get ready for the olympics

The Olympics was intended for amateur athletes to gain some glory. No professional athletes should be involved whatsoever, and let's not even talk about the WTA giving RANKING POINTS for those that play. That's a slap in the face to every pole vaulter, gymnast, swimmer, fencer, etc.

I only know ths tennis season has gone by rather quickly. I want them to get healthy and come back fully. Whether it's for the Olympics or US or Australian - I just want them back to their old forms again.

its just too bad we won't be seeing her play in Montreal this year again.. I remember back in 2002 I was at the Rogers Cup and I was really eager to see her play live and she came on center court to apologize that she couldn't play because of an injury.. I thought it was a nice gesture of hers :) and her butt is surprisingly big when your see her in person.. I don't want to offense her.. but I was kind of surprised hehe

Yeah, but why punish the players that are good? I always thought being good was a good thing.
