View Full Version : why wasnīt Mariaīs loss yesterday that main headline?!

I mean...you got the most dominating player in most peopleīs eyes going down pretty routinely, yet the most headlines were about Serenaīs withdrawal.

Think that if it was a Williams losing, a withdrawal would have made headlines?!

This is puzzling really...how everything the sisters do or donīt is news.

Because Sharapova-Myskina was the night match and it ended very late on the East Coast. Too late to file another headline.

Winning one major tournament, and a fifth rate tournament are not what dominating is.

But then I know this is sarcastic right

Are you what, a retard? It's obvious. She lost to a player she was supposed to lose to. When a player, no matter how popular (and beautiful in Maria's case) a player is, as long as she's supposed to lose on paper (ranking and actual tennis level wise), her loss doesn't make a headline. I think her apperance at Sandiego made bigger news as it was her tournament since the victory at Wimbledon.
Of course when a Williams sister loses, it makes a headline cuz they ain't s'pposed to lose nobody, even to Davenport. They may not be the invincible sisters they once were and lost the aura but still we deep inside think they are not supposed to lose under any circumstances.

Well Bandabou, the match started at 7 or 7:30 on the west coast. It must've finished at the earliest 11:30 on the East Coast. It's just too late to make the deadlines in East Coast papers. It'll be added as an aside, I think, but nothing more.

If the Serena-Vera match was to switch positions with the Maria-Myskina match, then yes, Maria-Nastya would've carried the day.

SerenaVenusNo1

See, Bandabou? I told you. Look at the Yahoo sports headline from today.

"Jammed knee and all, Lindsay Davenport is on a California roll. The fourth-seeded Davenport posted a victory over Elena Dementieva of Russia Saturday to earn a spot in the finals at the Acura Classic. Davenport will face the winner of the night match between No. 3 Anastasia Myskina and 12th-seeded Vera Zvonareva."

That match has been over for hours. It's just past East Coast deadlines.

All the Spanish players want to win RG.
Same for many of the Russians : Dementieva said it was her favourite one, Myskina, Zvonareva.
Many Italians : Farina Elia, Schiavone.
Belgians : Justine especially
All the French : Mauresmo, Dechy, Loit etc.
Spanish + many Russians + Italians + Belgians + French = a lot of people.

Players whose favourite tournament is Wimbledon : maybe Serena and Venus, Sharapova (she said so), (Navratilova).
I don't remember other names.

Davenport, Capriati prefer US Open over Wimbledon.

There may be some errors in what I said : but Wimbledon definitely ain't the tournament most of the players want to win.

While nobody expects Maria to win all the time, the news headlines I saw were kind of strange. I didn't figure Serena to win in San Diego anyway, so I thought Maria's loss in her first tournament since Wimbly was a bigger story than was made of it.

Why were things played the way they were?

That's kind of complex. The American sports press is very jingoistic and they still think that the news about "American girls" outweighs everything else. So Serena pulling out was bigger than Maria getting knocked out.

Today's LA Times led with Lindsay making it to the final in ho hum fashion, not with the incredible three setter played by Vera and Anastasia, which had to be one of the most compelling women's matches I have seen in the last few years. A 17-15, third set tie-breaker, and they lead with Lindsay making it to the final?

But the other part about Maria is that the press had just finished proclaiming her as the greatest invention since sliced bread. So what happpens when she loses her very first post Wimbly tournamant -- not just loses it, gets spanked? And the spanking was at the hands of a "very" foreign, harder to understand, less good looking girl with a game that is not nearly as spectacular to watch.

Playing that up might indicate that the press didn't really know what it was talking about when it canonized Maria just a few weeks ago.

But don't think this was all because of bias in favor of Maria. Maria was simply treated in "flavor of the month" fashion. She was the next big thing and that means she got her 15 minutes of fame and the press has now moved on to Lindsay Davenport, who is now "the story." She will be, until she loses.

But I am not knocking Maria here. I think she is a very solid player who will probably win more slams. She is very good. But so is Myskina. In fact, she may be much better, but the press isn't going to give her the same ride, even if she wins the US Open. As attractive as she is, Myskina is not traditional American movie star pretty. To me she looks like some club kid who wears black eye make up and stays out all night, hanging with the other goths. She speaks with a heavy accent, doesn't live in America and doesn't fit the Barbie girl image. She also doesn't play the big serving, big forehand power game that the press finds easy to understand. Myskina, like Hingis before her, confounds many in the press because they don't understand why or how she wins.

So all those things conspire against Myskina and for Maria, as far as the American media goes.

Interesting......

Think so?! Hey she is 4 BIG titles already and she is only 17. Who has been better than that at her age in history?! Who, who?! ;)Raises hand and :bounce:. I know, I know!!! ;)

It doesn't matter what "some of the spanish guys" think. Wimbledon IS the premier tournament. It is the oldest. It is the biggest. Fact. That's even acknowledged by most commentators in the US. It is also the one most players want to win
:worship: Wimbledon :worship: Maria Sharapova:).
No need to say more, whoever wins Wimbledon will become the most famous tennis player fo the year.
(except maybe Conchita:p):).

You don't admit you lost? WTF? Do we have to go through this again?Whether they are the best is just an OPINION.

FACT: Manchester United are the most FAMOUS and PRESTIGIOUS club in the world. You got it yet?

In ENGLAND!! Why would leave Beckham leave the greatest club in the world?!

More famous, more prestigious, ...

Conclusion of this thread: Every grand slam has an equal importance. Wimbledon is not more prestigious because Maria did win there.

btw: I would like to see how it will be next year, with Williams-sisters in their old form and the Belgian girls on the top of their game... It will be a unique chance for Maria to prove how good she really is.

He left because he had already spent best days at united. Fergie(our manager) did not want him any more cos he knew becks was WAY past his best. He has so far been proven right. Man Utd PRODUCE world class players through the youth system, when they get old and past their best, we sell them to Real Madrid who just pay big money for prima donnas.

Forlan is a reserve team player. Saha is a back up player. C ronaldo is like a young Ryan Giggs, AWESOME. United have won 8 premiership titles since the premiership started 12 years ago. Pretty dominant, we never go 2 seasons without winning either. We have the best youth system in the world.

Hey cheese. How u doing this sunday?! Whine?! You consider it whining?! Sorry....just pointed it out. Iīd think that Maria, the Wimbledon champ and the best thing to ever happen to tennis, losing would be more newsworthy than a simple withdrawal. Just me.

DID YOU READ MY FUCKING POST WHERE I EXPLAINED THE CONCEPT OF DEADLINES?

God, what an idiot.

Nope sir...Maria IS the headline. Serena shouldnīt be the headline....remember it is all about the champs and Maria is one and Serena ainīt. Wouldnīt hear moi complaining if Maria would have been the headline. Everytime a champ loses it is a headline, right?! Or am I mistaken?!

She wasn't the main headline because she's still an UNKNOWN[U]

Don't take it personal, casual fans don't know who she is. Ask Justine.

It isn't worth a headline because the Acura classic is UNKNOWN. No-one but hardcore tennis fans gives a fig who wins the Acura classic, or even knows of its existence.

What is important is that Maria remains Wimbledon Champion and that's what the world cares about - not some QF match in an unknown Californian tournament.

This is all you need to know: Maria Sharapova :worship: is THE one and only wimbledon ladies champion. The others like Williams etc USED TO BE the wimbledon champion.

Maria didn't get headline attention for losing because she's the darling of the moment. Why would they bring her up especially after her "saving tennis" after Wimbledon only to bring her down with her nasty loss?

It doesn't matter what some professional players think, it only matters what you and other playrs think. Those players that support your views are correct, and the rest "don't matter". Thanks for that. Tool.
