View Full Version : Sharapova: one of the most deserving wimbledon champions ever!

I mean Serena Williams won wimbledon in 2002 and 2003, which is pretty impessive. I mean for a 17 year old to destroy Serena 6-1 6-4 in the final is just nothing short of superb. Has any other young player done that before in a final against such a dominant player, thrash them in such a manner?

I believe Serena won both sets with the difference being a break of serve, but she wasn't even supposed to win more than 2 games in each set, according to most analysts.

That's even more impressive that she took out three former chanpions en route to the championship win. Maria only took out one former champion (Davenport) and it took her three sets to do it.

Yes, lets see Masha beat the world's #3, #2, and #1 player in succession at a grand slam, and not win one by taking advantage of having both the world's top 2 players out of commission.

I'd like to see her take a set off of one.

2 former champs Maria took out. So taking ONLY 2 means that she's not worthy champ? Anyway she wasn't given the opportunity to take out more. She took out everyone she was allowed to take out.

Impressive, but I believe Serena did it in sucession.

One Champion is not more "deserving" than another. If you win a title, you deserved it. Plain and simple. Get over it and yourself. Thanks

Talk about double-standards. :fiery:

The "world 1 and 2 players" have never won Wimbledon when healthy.

And Roland Garros was an unworthy win too was it, because Kim and Justine weren't there? And kim and justine aren't really No 1 and 2 either by this reasoning, since the Williams weren't at their tournament wins...

And when the Williams were dominating, Steffi and monica were injured. Capriati was "missing" as well. All wins in that period were unworthy too I guess...

The good thing about my thread is that I am only praising a 17 year old wimbledon champion. I'm not dissing other players.

PS I started this well thought out thread just to even things up with the other thread which was dissing maria.

How is a thread saying "Is Sharapova lucky for winning Wimbledon" derogatory to her in any way? You may disagree with it, but it certainly isnt derogatory. However, when THIS THREAD RIGHT HERE gets posted saying in its first post,

"I mean for a 17 year old to destroy Serena 6-1 6-4 in the final is just nothing short of superb. Has any other young player done that before in a final against such a dominant player, thrash them in such a manner?"

That is derogatory. And Im sure Narc is not even a Serena fan, just a Maria hater, so why was Serena being trashed even brought into this thread?

Does Maria's own play and results not prove that? If Maria is so deserving why is this thread even necessary? Wouldn't it be clear to all? You do Maria more harn than good with this thread and the assumption that her success needs to be pointed out to those who would seemingly forget or not praise her enough.

I don't get how someone can deserve a victory more than someone else. Well done to Maria for winning, but the same could be said of all the champs from the past 20 years or more.

This thread was to even out the other thread which was saying maria was lucky, this is the opposite of that. Anything wrong with it?

And within this premise, your argument, you think you have evened out posts? It would seem it's more for you than it is for Maria the actual tennis player.

That was his comment after bad repping me. Very mature and well written, isn't it?

To be honest, quite a few posters actually came up with that line of (hem) reasoning last year. Which doesn't justify the same crazy twisted logic being held against Maria's win in Wimbie, I agree with you. It seems some people always want to re-write history or (to put it more bluntly) are just incapable of moving on.

Mine didn't make sense? You started an inflammatory thread on a topic that's been done to death already. Yes, Maria won Wimbledon. But these threads are NOW unnecessary.
