Brooks that is. Serena and Venus's trainer/therapist.

I give her props for keeping them healthy in 2001-2002 after they had issue after issue before that, but its been injury after injury (especially with Venus) and a lot of these Kerri really should be picking up.

Obviously its not all her fault, its not her body, but I think as a pro travelling with professional atheletes, she should be quicker with some of these injuries...maybe I'm wrong. Or maybe V&S aren't listening to her advice? Who knows, but while I don't think she should be fired, I definately think she should be re-assessing her duties

Thats a very good question. it'll be interesting to see if they decide to let go of her because of these injuries.

I seriously wonder myself.

This girl was purposely hired to PREVENT injuries, yet, every week, it's always a new injury.

I definitely think it's time for her to go, as she doesn't seem to be doing her job too well.

But then, maybe all of these injuries are just hard to prevent considering their game, so, who knows??

I understand that, but I wonder what kind of preventative measures she's having them do.

One thing that it could be is that its from years of doing something wrong and its catching up with them now...but with the so little tennis that they play (relatively speaking) how on earth do they get so injured?

That's my question

Maybe thats just it M. maybe they play too LITTLE tennis, that when they get out there, they forget to move a certain way or not turn their foots or whatever, because they're not used to it.
i dont know what i'm saying. pay no attention to me.

How can you prevent injuries when Venus, for instance, picks them up while she ties her shoes or picks up her bags :silly:

No I understand what you meant, but I'm thinking more along the lines that since they kind of did it their own way, they didn't do a lot of the injury prevention that they maybe teach at acadmies? But I doubt it because they were at Macci's....I dunno.

Its just that if players who play Junior Tournaments and play 25 tournaments a year in singles and doubles have LESS injuries than they do (some of them playing the same game) I don't get it.

Obviously it differs from body to body, and of course they can get a lot of little injuries, but these two have the SAME injuries, over and over and over again.

Especially with Venus and her wrists. Her tendons should've been strengthened by now. They're a muscle like any else and can stronger. It's a bit different for Serena since she had surgery and all but there is no reason Venus should be having such long term issues....of course unless there is a permanent problem we weren't aware of

Thats a good question, but I'm not sure there's that much she or anyone can do :(. You'd think two ridiculously fit people would be less injury prone, but thats not the case anymore at least.

There are strengthening techniques that can help prevent these type of things, which is exactly why I don't understand how they are getting these stupid injuries when they can be prevented.... ESPECIALLY in Venus' case.

I mean, seriously now, is Kerri doing anything to help prevent these injuries, because it sure doesn't seem like that.

But then, maybe the girls are cursed.

In Serena's case maybe not, but Venus's problems are with her tendons. Those things can be strengthened to the point where they can withstand lifting a bag or tieing a shoe

It can also be done with corrective surgery. I was born with Achilles tendons that were too small for my body. It was so bad, I couldn't even stand flat-footed, let alone walk that way. When I was nine years old, I had surgery to have the tendons lengthened, and I was told to stretch them at least twice a day, which I'm still doing 30 years later. I don't know if that what's wrong with Venus' wrists, but there are things that could have been done to correct the problem. ;)

That's why I don't understand these strange injuries from Venus, when they can EASILY be prevented.

Serena, it's a little different, although I'm sure things could still be done.

Do they really listen to Kerri day in day out?

Maybe they just need an individual trainer. I don't follow their schedules that closely, but it seems like they don't really live together anymore, and travel together less than they used to. I know Roddick and Agassi's trainers only work for them and they work with them on almost a daily basis.

Kerri is with them at virtually every tournament, so thats not an excuse

Yes, but you have to prepare your body to withstand the rigors of a tournament before you are in the tournament. Is she a trainer or a type of masseuse? A trainer real efforts are done outside of tournaments. I don't know if she needs to go. I have always thought that both Williams are fast, good movers, but somewhat 'heavy footed'. Venus especially takes one step when two would do and often sort of contorts herself to get to shots. Serena lunges towards the ball as well. Ballroom dance lessons would probably help.

look at how they play. they take hard, deliberate steps, they take big swings, and they don't have the best footwork. they both hit a lot of balls off-balance and they are GREAT at it, but it catches up to you. they are also tall and neither is a light girl. more pressure on the joints. all these things, i think.

for instance, look at federer. he's tall, takes big swings, takes a big beating returning some monster serves, and plays TONS of tennis.

BUT, look at how smooth his service action is compared to venus's (she has wrist problems)
and looks at how much lighter on his feet and how much better his footwork is than serena's (she has knee issues).
i'm not dissing the girls, if anything, it's more credit to the rest of their game to play as well as they do...
federer has stayed relatively injury free, god willing, and he doesn't really use the gym, but does smart exercises that develop muscle AND flexibility with his physio-therapist. i think he's very smart for all this, and hopefully he sets a good example.

If I'm not wrong, I believe Kerri lives with them actually.

That is true, but Federer is stronger than they are so he gets away with it.

If the Williamses had better footwork (especially Serena) and a bit better technique (especially Venus) they'd be crazy. 2002 would've happened in 1998.

As for Kerri living with them, I doubt it. She may be down the block, but I doubt she lives with them

The only reason I said that was because on that MTV Diary of Serena a year or so ago, Serena was making gumbo in the kitchen, and I remember seeing Kerri there.
