It happened when she was serving, she missed a first serve then turned around and sort of shaked her leg while she got a second ball, but in that split second you could tell that something was wrong but she just kept going

this is just heartbreaking...I hope both her and Vee are ready for the Open. I cant even imagine another US Open without them...

I seriously think they should pull out of the olympics.

Things will get better. When Agassi came back in 1998, his first year was solid yet unspectacular. But year after that he really kicked some serious butt. When Stef came back after knee surgery in 1998, she struggled all year long with minor injuries and unexpected losses, finding her champion's touch only closer to the end of year. And in the next year she was back into Slam winner's circle. Just be patient.

the thing about injury is that sometimes you can never fully recover...its obvious that she will have to be very strategic in how she schedules her tournaments, especially HC events. Watch Rena become a claycourt specialist because of this ;) its easier on the joints!

Even Davey talked about how her knee is slowly disentegrating and there is nothing the doctors can do.

awwwwwwww  she's so incredibly sweet. everytime her and Venus seem to be getting back to normal, they have a setback. i wish they would just get a fucking break already. it sucks having to hope for no injuries EVERY time they step onto the court. her knee injury just after Wimbledon was thouht of as just to be "minor", but she's still having trouble with it 13 months later. i hope it's not a chronic injury that could put an end to her career. sorry to think the worst, but some things just go like that

She keeps saying it's a matter of time. She can't do that if her knee is shot and she comes back too soon and she can't get back to the top without playing matches. I don't see how she's going to do it.

"Serena Williams Withdraws From Acura

1 hour, 42 minutes ago

By BETH HARRIS, AP Sports Writer

CARLSBAD, Calif. - Serena Williams (news - web sites) withdrew from the Acura Classic on Friday because of swelling in her left knee, almost exactly a year after surgery on that knee.

AP Photo

Williams, who hasn't won a tournament since March, was scheduled to play 12th-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia in the quarterfinals.

She said her knee began acting up after she chased a drop shot in the first set of her third-round victory over Elena Bovina on Thursday night.

"I said, 'Ooh, that really hurts,'" the top-seeded Williams said. "I figured it would go away. I really just stopped running the rest of the match. I must have tweaked it somewhere down the line."

Williams said she was up until 2 a.m. Friday receiving treatment.

"I was trying to get it calmed down," she said.

The WTA Tour injury report classified the injury as a recurrence. On Aug. 1, 2003, Williams had surgery to repair a partial tear in the same knee, then missed eight months.

"It is ironic, huh?" she said.

Williams returned in March and won her first tournament at Miami, but she hasn't won in seven tournaments since then. She lost to Maria Sharapova in the Wimbledon (news - web sites) final July 3 and to Lindsay Davenport in last week's final at Carson.

Williams, 28-5 this year, planned to have an MRI exam in Los Angeles later Friday. "

As I've said before the key with Vee and Serena is injury free tennis. With their losses this year I've always said a lose is ok as long as they got out without any new injuries because It seems that when they start putting things together and look like they will be able to concentrate on getting back to the top again they get injured again. But I would rather them take their time and come back fully healthy and take their lumps losing early than have them come back not healthy and not only lose but further injure themselves because IMO a loss is worse when you get hurt in the process.

Awww, that was nice, pav! Hopefully Serena gets back to full health soon. I can't imagine her career being stopped by a chronic injury . But like ys said, Steffi took a while to get back to GS winning form, and Lindsay as well is just now beginning to look as good as she did pre-injury. Get better for your next tourney, Serena... and don't be afraid to skip the Canadian Open if you need to rest the knee.

It's a shame because this could have been another amazing battle. I'm glad Vera's in the SF and all, I just didn't want it to be like this. :(

No more injuries, please! Let's have Venus, Justine, Kim, Serena, and all other injured players back to 100% ASAP! :)
