I too love her. I have liked her ever since I saw her profile in ***************** where all the junior players list their fav players like Graf, Seles, Serena, Capriati, etc etc.
This was Maria's reply:

Favorite Tennis Player:
"Myself - because I believe in myself"

It was so in your face but funny at the same time. I knew then and there she was different.

Just curious...what is an upstart? She's been playing since she was 5.
Does that mean Seles and Hingis are also upstarts because they've won GS at 16/17. Was Sampras an upstart for being the youngest US open champ?
Im not trying to change your mind, just want to clarify the meaning of upstart.

Hey. An upstart is actually someone who comes from a poor or disadvantaged background and rises to a position of wealth, power or privilege, and in the process becomes mean, arrogant or presumptuous. So sort of like someone who's forgotten where they came from and act all snobby etc... I don't know if Maria is like that, but she gives off that vibe.

So it's just better if you are a millioner and you play tennis to earn even more money? The rich stay rich and the poor stay poor? Nice ideology.

I'd say that all Russian players are upstart then. Kournikova, Safins, everyone wasn't very rich.

And that even applies to, lets' say, 95% of the pro players of any sport.

i like her game, but the hype aint for me, sorry.

i just like the way she pumps herself up and plays some good shots. but she needs to develop a game plan, cuz one day those shots are gonna go off and she's gonna lose like she did ala FO. some variety would be great, but she's only 17, so that's all to come :)

This poll is terribly biased. Where's the opition "I love her because ..." It's not like we Sharapve fans got to love her for no reason. So stupid and insulting to her most of all.

Doc
Jul 30th, 2004, 11:04 AM
I don't think Maria is snobby. She is just very focused, and has belief in herself.

As for the so-called "hype", its not Maria's fault. Part is natural attention for a personable 17-year-old GS winner. The rest is generated by IMG, who invested quite a bit of money in her and now want a good return, so they try to squeeze every drop of publicity out of her.

Yes. There's only one choice for people who like Maria, (who have to say they "love" her), and three for people who are critical.

I'm not really into strong baseliners like Maria, Davenport, Seles, etc, so she's not a favourite of mine. I do think she's very talented though and it was great to see a new GS winner, especially a teenager. It's good to have someone else in the mix and I've a feeling that matches between her and Justine and Amelie may prove classics of contrasting styles. So, yeah, in short, I'm glad she's around and I think she'll go far but I'm not a particular fan.

I think she's a good young player. I think she's nice to look at. I think she seems pretty level headed and focused for her age. I'm not convinced she's going to be dominating so soon but I think she could dominate at some point.

She's not my favorite but I enjoy watching her play.

Most people on this poll dont. Why? Because she comes off as a robot in her interviews. She has no warmth or personality and seems to be as clever as wet bread. Its okay not everyone can be like martina hingis or venus williams or even Jenn who is at least spunky and firey.

Sorry but sharapova is the first in a new breed of player who has been totally groomed and manufactured by her handlers, agents, coaches, whatever to be as boring and non controversial and non opinonated as possible. Yawn.

I want to root for a person not a cardboard cut out.

Myskina is unlike sharapova in every way possible. GO SKINA GO!

Also I hate the fact that skina has accomplished more than pova but because pova has long legs and blonde hair and is russian she overshadows skina. Its really sad.

I hope skina kicks her butt.

.Utter :bs: . Sharapova won the biggest slam, beating the dominant champion, and became unbeaten on grass at the age of 17 and 3 months. How do you know her father didnt force her into it so he could make money? Sharapova started at such a young age it was impossible to make her own decision to take up tennis. She even moved countries to develop her tennis, thats not a decision that a 7 year old can make totally on her own! Its the same for anyone who starts tennis at a very young age, their parents obviously do have a lot of influence, so dont act like Maria isnt manufactured like every other young star because thats total rubbish.

For some of us who don't have extensive tv coverage or those who like me get tennis on TV only when Tim henman is playing, we haven't seen her as a player too much apart from Birmingham (and even then not too much coverage) and Wimbly  . So the press is doing my head in and all these threads here about her as well, and believe me I'm very rarely paying attention to what people say in these threads  (today was an exception i guess)...

To be fair I havent seen many interviews of hers but the ones i have seen she came off as very one dimensional. Maybe I need to see more, that could be true. I will look for more.

No one said its okay to hate her because shes blonde thats ridiculous.

I agree that she won the dominant slam but she hardly beat the dominant player. Justine henin is the dominant player on tour not someone who has come off an eight month injury layover. Though serena was the defending champ. Kudos to maria.

However the fact remains she still hasnt accomplished more than myskina.

Do you really consider a person who hasnt won a slam since 2000 a dominant player? Top player, yes. Dominant, No. Also do you really consider someone who has just come off an eight month injury with only one title a dominant player? no.

If you are winning slams you are dominant. Like maria and myskina and I would put justine but she is on an injury layoff and who knows when she will be back.

If you are winning slams you are dominant.

That's just normal. Right after a slam win any player is going to be highly publicized. Venus has been through it, Jenny after her comeback went through it, Serena went through it after her period of domination (which I don't think is over, just momentarily paused), etc..Look at the increase of coverage Davenport has gotten now that she has won a few consecutive tournaments. It's normal.

First I am not a Sharapova fan. That being said, I think for a 17 year old she has a lot of maturity and grace that is often not seen by veterans twice her age.

In terms of her game, she is good, but top 20 good right now. Her win was not a fluke, she was consistent and strong when others were not, and she deserved the title. She has lots to work on, including more mental strength and more diversity in shot making. The depth in women's tennis, thank in part to Mother Russia, means that more and more people can win. The william sisters are no longer dominant, the belgians injured, and that opens the door.

Sharapova has A LOT to prove, regardless of the GS. I think she will, she's only 17 people!

I'd like to see her play the veterans who are patient (Sugiyama, Conchi, Frazier, Davenport) post Wimby to see if her game has moved up a few notches.

She could be the next Iva, or the next Hingis, only time will tell.

I like her despite all the attention that the media gives her. She can't control what others say about her, and who wouldn't take advantage of instant fame and worship.

I think she's mature, very talented, and has a lot of respect for her opponents. And it does help that she's a beauty.

The only thing I hope is that she stays centered and not get caught up in other's expectations and criticisms of her. She seems to believe that she's a winner, and I believe she can be.

Hmmm, I don't think I agree with you... ..."BEING a moron" refers to a state- in this case referring to your behavior. Therefore, I was labeling the state of your BEHAVIOR moronic, not you as a person - which I wouldn't do since I obviously don't know you as a person. saying "you ARE a moron" implies that's just what you are, which would be calling you a moron. There's a difference.

" I was right by saying this:
Quote:

Then, you were right by saying this:
Quote:

I was right because these words also exist.
 No shit. But the implication was that because the person said that s/he "didn't like her" then s/he must "dislike" her. By saying "there's also indifference" I was simply saying what you said was not necessarily true. Then you responded with a list of words unrelated to anything, which was obviously meant as an obnoxious retort because you didn't have anything valid to argue.

" an useless discussion..."...I'll give you that.

Frank
Jul 31st, 2004, 11:31 PM
At least we agree on the last point...Anyway, of course I knew what you meant by saying "There's also indifference". Because I wasn't discussing with you, I made the posts with the "words" in it, after which you got pissed off calling me "behaving like a moron" after which I got pissed off and ended up both of us pissed off.
Anyway, since we both agree this discussion is useless I reckon we both stop this. Sorry if I insulted or annoyed you...
