Hi!
Just been watcing one of the seemingly limitless Antique programmes on TV this morning and it got me thinking about what tennis-related memorabilia people have? Has anyone got anything really special that they have either bought or got given by a player at a match?
I would have to say that my two most prized tennis-related items are firstly, a huge book of photographs called "Gaby, dancing on the court' by a Japanese photographer, he basically followed Gaby around the tour for a year - with her consent! - and took some amazing full action photos of her! Some amazing photos! Also, I have a collection of photos which belonged to Helen Wills-Moody, who won 8 Wimbledons and 7 US Opens in the 1920's-30's, there are some amazing photos of players from this era and also of Helen Wills herself, a very personal item which I love as I think this period of tennis history - with Lenglen and then Wills - sewed the seeds for the popularity of tennis that exists today - Wills was one of the first real tennis superstars!
One last point, I have a book of cigarette cards from the 1930's, showing lots of different players and their strokes - there are over 50 cards and only one of them is a player with a two-handed backhand! It is described as a 'freak shot'! How times have changed!
