Venus Williams withdraws with wrist injury
July 27, 2004

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) -- Venus Williams (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/87/) pulled out of the Acura Classic on Tuesday with a sprained right wrist, an injury that forced her to withdraw from the semifinals of last week's tournament in Carson, Calif.

WTA spokesman Jim Fuhse made the announcement, just a few hours before Williams' opening-round match against Gisela Dulko (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/525/).

``I have been resting my wrist and receiving as much treatment as possible in order to give myself every possible chance to play,'' Williams said in a WTA press release. ``Unfortunately, there just wasn't enough time to recover. I've been advised to let the wrist fully heal in order to prevent aggravating it even more seriously.'' Williams said last week the injury occurred when she pushed off her arms to get up after tying her shoe two hours before Saturday's semifinal against Lindsay Davenport (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/93/). Williams trailed 7-5, 2-0 when she retired. Williams has won three straight titles here, from 2000-2002.

Of course it's probably a little bit of both:

1. Venus making sure she definitely can't play

and

2. Tournament wants to sell more tickets.

I'm glad she withdrew. Just let it heal Venus. You can always play Montreal if you want (even though I doubt she will).

Yeah!

Just sad to see another injury put a stop
to the wonderful momentum and confidence she was
building. Hopefully, she can hold on to it upon her return.

Given how important the Olympics are to her,
if she really feels better by next week she
just may play in Montreal to get a little
more match play before Ahtens. :)

I just found out she withdrew.

I was hoping aginst hope she would play this week, but if her wrist was still bothering her, then she made the right decision.

She could still play next week and maybe get a first round bye since Kim, Lindsay, Justine, Maria and probably Jennifer aren't playing. I honestly think if she didn't have to play first round in this tournametn, her wrist would have healed in time to her to play.

All,

I'm glad Venus withdrew from this tourney. This reminds me of how her father once said that back in the day - Venus would play even though she had injuries. What was that one injury that eventually kept her off the tour the first part of 2000?

Venus was hoping her wrist would hold up - and I'm sure it was okayed by the tour trainer that she wait to see. Her health is more important than a tennis game - and that is for sure. And she is smart to withdraw than to ever play hurt again. All players are smart to take care of their injuries.

When was the last time she withdrew for an injury - other than when she made her last final on clay - and won her semifinal match after sustaining an inury? Before that - that child played injured at Wimby 2003 and made the finals. And when she lost to Deme earlier this year - didn't she injure something then but played on? What a trouper she was at all three tourneys. Got to love her.

Hopefully - Venus will be able to play the Olympics and US Open.

I wonder if she is still playing at the Olympics because according the the WTA Tour webiste, her next tournament is the US OPen, unless that was an error on their part.

that's probably an error.
The WTAsite isn't thąt up to date normally
Venus always said she would play, so it must be a mistake...

Yes, I think that's the main reason she withdrew.
No to make it worse and not to put the Olympics in
jeopardy as she said winning the Olympics was the most
significant title she's ever won.

I told you those articles and schedules of play meant nothing as to whether she was playing or not.

As for next week, like the trainer suggested, REST IT. Why should she play next week?? She has had plenty of practice the last two weeks, she'll be fine for the Oympics. She has the first three rounds to play with, not to mention double's.

If she plays in Canada, then the Olympics for BOTH competitions, that right over to the US Open, Venus will be exhausted. She should just concentrate on healing it, and concentrating on the big events.
