Who does everyone think deserves them, stick to american players because thats who will be receiving them..
I think it will come down to these.
Maindraw
1. Jamea Jackson
2. Amber Liu for winning NCAAS
3. Ashley Harkelroad but probably wont end up needing one now
4. Jess Kirkland 2 25 k titles and a MD win at tier 2 last week.
5. THe U18 nationals winner
I would say these are pretty much the only guarantees. Last 3 will be tricky, guessing id say
6. Kelly McCain
7. Carly Gullicson seems to have the usta support behind her even though been a shitty year.
8. Angela Haynes same reason.
Qualies. assuming kristen schkulbir and Cory Ann make it on their rankings now.
1. Meg Falcon
2. Jess Nguyen
3. Jewel Peterson
4. Varvara Lepchenko if she actually is representing the USA
5. Alexa Glatch
6. Sunitha Rao
7 Mary Gambale
8 Alexandra Mueller

Other contenders the UBerois but if there switchin to India i wouldnt give them WCs, Tiffany Dabek-Diana Ospina 2 highest ranked americans who prob wont get in. Martina Nav if she asks for one dont see too many other options really. JUlia Cohen?? Krysty Marcio?? Bea Bielik??

I just asked a related question a few days ago about Sesil Karatancheva. The thing is, she is still ranked so low that she probably won't be granted direct entry to the qualies. Without a WC, she won't be able to play at all. That would be a shame since she has been boasting about winning the USO. (Not that anyone believes that.)

Her rank def would get her in qualies not sure if shes allowed to actually play cuz of her age not sure if shes passed the age since wimby and roland garros when she wasnt allowed to play.. NO chance the USTA will give her a MD WC. USA PLayers only

Bea Bielik ;)

If she gets one, it would be qualies, but I doubt it.

She has done absolutely NOTHING this year.

I think Angela Haynes will almost definitely get one, and probably even Alexandra Stevenson, even though she has had a dreadful year.

Look for the remaining two to go to either Cory Ann Avants, Bethanie Mattek, Abigail Spears, or Kelly McCain.

I'm sure Monica Seles will get one...if she's wanting to play. :worship:

And I've said all along that Navratilova will take a wild-card in singles. :o

I hope Monica plays the USO!

Bethanie Mattek can make a good case for one, coming off her $50k challenger win yesterday. In fact, she was talking pretty confidently about being at the Open this year, so she may already know she's getting a main draw wild card. As for Bea Bielik, she's had injuries this year (knee and foot), which the USTA might take into account by giving her a wild card into the qualies. She lives right down the road from the USTA National Tennis Center and practices there during the year, so it's still a good hometown story.

2. Lilia Osterloh (with her recent play)
3. Bethanie Mattek
4. Alexandra Stevenson
5. Abigail Spears
6. Kelly Mc Cain
7. Ashley Harkleroad
8. Jessica Kirkland

...and only 6 spots available.

As for Qualifying:

1. Carly Gullickson
2. Cory Ann Avants
3. Jessica Nguyen
4. Neha Uberoi
5. Shikha Uberoi
6. Jewel Peterson
7. Megan Falcon
8. Alexa Glatch

I dont think the usta would give one to Abi Spears shes already 23 and not considered a prospect. Can Alexa even play the open shes only 14

But, Abigail has improved dramatically over the past year.

Heck, they gave one to Washington two year's ago, and she was older than Abigail is right now.

As for Alexa, I'm not sure if she went over her playing limit yet, we'll just have to see. She has been playing very well in the challengers in the past month or so.

These might be long shots, but I would throw Tanner Cochran, Ahsha Rolle, and Iris Ichim into the mix as possible qualifying wild cards. They haven't done anything huge this year, but they're still teenagers. They liked Tanner enough to give her one last year.

It would be ridicuous not to give one to Kirkland. She was a good second serve away from having a really close match with Petrova in LA, and she's only 16. (But she'll probably at least get quallies) And I want Bea to get one though she doesn't deserve MD, but quallies though

I would say:

1) Liu
2) 18's winner
3) Mattek
4) Haynes
5) Kirkland
6) McCain

I refuse to even consider Alex Stevenson due to disagreeability. And any of these can be bumped for Nav and Monica if they play.

quallies:

Spears
McCain
Jackson
Avants
Gullickson
Cochran
Peterson?
Nguyen?
Uberois?

Spears , McCain, Jacson are way above qualies cut off and prob Avants will make it on her own 2

It's too bad I haven't seen any of the USTA's "Topspin" show yet this summer. That's where I get my annual hints as to which young players they're high on. I just had a brainstorm, though -- could a wild card have something to do with Viktoriya Kutuzova suddenly deciding to change her citizenship? She said she was hoping the USTA would help her get the paperwork moved through quickly. Maybe that's so she can be an American in time for the Open???

Isnt it a fact that the uberois are changing over to play for INDIA. Thought i read that somewhere. no wcs for them than

Flipkens was guaranteed a qualy WC for winning the girls event last year, but she's ranked #200 now so she won't need it.

Right now I think it should like this

Main Draw
Amber Liu-NCAA Winner
Girls 18s winner-??
Ashley Harkleroad (she's inside the top 100 now, but cutoff was last week)
Kelly McCain
Jamea Jackson
Angela Haynes
Bethanie Mattek
Alexandra Stevenson

(I wouldn't give Abigail Spears one because apart from the 75K win, she's hardly been able to string two matches together in 2004. She's basically living off her points from her results in Australia back in late 2003. I would say McCain and Jackson would be the replacable ones if Seles or Navratilova asked for Wild Cards).

Qualifying
Jewel Peterson
Alexa Glatch
Megan Falcon
Mary Gambale
Neha Uberoi
Shikha Uberoi
Jessica Kirkland
Diana Ospina

(I can't believe Bea Bielik is getting mentions for ANY kind of wild card BTW. The chick has won two matches all year, and one of them was against a girl who isn't even ranked. She's clearly not motivated either...with no points to defend all through July, she goes and plays Team Tennis instead:rolleyes: The fact that she's a native New Yorker is irrelevant. You need to have done something to deserve a WC at the US Open.)

Fantastic
Jul 27th, 2004, 05:00 PM
Main Draw:

1. Martina Navratilova (if not, then Jessica Kirkland)
2. Monica Seles (if not, then Angela Haynes)
3. Alexandra Stevenson
4. Amber Liu
5. Ashley Harkleroad
6. Bethanie Mattek
7. Jamea Jackson
8. Under 18s Winner

Jessica Kirkland, Angela Haynes and Kelly McCain would be unlucky to miss out on a MD wildcard.

Played doubles only in Team Tennis and still said she felt all stiff and sore. I'd be shocked if she has any intentions of entering the Open.
