View Full Version : Does Serena need to lose weight as part of her conditioning?

I know Serena has a full body type, but even with the muscles it seems this year, more than ever, she's packing it a bit...fat.

Andy Roddick lost 10 pounds with the assistance of a fitness coach and nutritionist and the results have shown in his game over the last 3 months.

Do you think Serena needs to burn off some calories?

Maybe, maybe...but the problem isnīt her weight...itīs her lack of mental strength in big matches.

When Serena won the "Serena slam" in 2002-03, she said herself that one of the contributing factors was losing a bit of weight (including muscle) by cutting out pork and beef from her diet. I believe this is where the answer lies.

Serena is one of the fittest women in the world, never mind in tennis!

Yes, true. But she said it herself that by cutting out pork and beef from her diet, she felt lighter and faster. Her words, not mine. I think it's worth trying again. I don't know, maybe she's still not eating beef or pork.

Isn't she the same weight as Myskina :o ??
and weights less than Milagros Sequera :tape: ??

I don't think so. To me, she looks just as fit and in shape as ever. She needs to worry about her groundstrokes right now, and nothing else.

She did already lose some weight since last year. She just needs to work on getting her confidence back to where it was before.

Serena is certainly doubting herself right now. The long layoff and the loss to Sharapova at Wimbledon has shaken her confidence to an all time low.

She needs a more tournaments to finally get back into the groove. It may take time but I'm sure she will back soon.

According to the WTA she weighs 59kg. That's only 2 kilos more than Justine and 9 less than Kim.

Yeah, thatīs what came into my mind as well...Nastya a little bit shorter than Serena and according to the WTAīs stats, they are of same weight (weird, isnīt it?). It canīt be a problem of weight, itīs just a mental thing, we all know that she has the guts and the physiques to win again every player, but still she hasnīt gotten over her long injury break, it takes time...you know sheīs just at 20% ;)

she looks slimmer than last year to me
She (nor any other tennisplayer for that matter) are among the fittest women in the world, that's for sure.
BUT, I don't think that's the problem, the problem is her footwork and probably confidence in finals (who would have thought  ). She doesn't loose these matches because she wasn't fit/quick enough. She lost them because she wasn't well placed on balls she DID reach in time, very weird, but it will take effort to sort her game out further, I think.

No!

Serena looks just as fit and in shape as
she ever has! Her problem yesterday and
throughout this whole tournament was her lack
of footwork and she was playing way to tentatively.

Serena's game isn't about playing it safe but, this
whole tournament she looked like she was playing not
to lose than rather to win. She was mostly just pushing
the ball back simply getting it in play rather than going
after her shots.

you're kidding right?

its only recently i said to one of my friends, "wow, look at serena's figure, shes lost weight and seems to lost some muscles along the way, she looks great"

and another of my friends thought she was becoming more alike venus.

i think maybe she has lost some muscle and this is what is possibly keeping her back from what she used to be like.

serena is fine.
and she'll be as fit as i, or most likely any people on this board ever will be.

I agree! She looks fit but I thought she was playing a little tentatively the whole tournament. She needs to give her all to tennis and give up the hollywood life.

Too many balls down the middle and against Lindsay that is suicide.

I don't think she needs to lose any weight, but I'm a bit concerned with her losing muscle mass. That doesn't sound too healthy. I don't know what she does for fitness, but I'd be curious to know that first before making any sort of judgment. Watching her play at Wimbledon, I'd say she just needs to play more matches to get back into her winning form. She looked very rough and not like the same Serena who won the "Serena Slam."

I do not think Serena needs to lose weight. I refuse to believe she is only 129 pounds (I mean, c'mon - baby got back and front) but then again my drivers license claims that I'm only 120 ;)

Regardless, for her body type she appears very fit.

I think Serena needs to refocus, play more tennis and get her confidence back. Although she is not my favorite, I still think she is the best female player in the game.

as someone has pointed out: she is looking waaaayy less muscular than in the past...could that be a couse for her losing the sting on her groundstrokes?!

you think so? I don't think she looks less muscular
Maybe her thighs, but not her arms

Haha. Girls always lie about their weight, she does not weigh less then Myskina!

She looks fine to me, but I know from experiance that even a few pounds gone does really help with speed and stamina. But, her speed and stamina is fine...so it's mental right now I think.

I do think her arms are still very muscular, but her legs arent as much as before.

i was watching the 2002 German Open finals the other night and I believe that year was Serena's best physical form. She had muscles an they were sculpted and her stomach region was flatter. Her body was just a lean and mean fighting machine for her size. Since 2003, I noticed her stomach is getting a little plumpier (not as bad as Capriati though in 2002-3) and her legs are thicker. Mind you, Serena is still fit.......but again I think she was at her tip top shape in 2002 and her results showed it.

Interesting thoughts, thanks. Most of you wrote "no", but the poll indicates otherwise.

No she doesn't have to lose weight. She needs to play a lot more matches, though. I'm biased but I'm not worried despite the bad loss to Lindsay. And I mean bad in that she didn't put up much of a fight. Lindsay could've still beaten Serena if Serena played her best but it was really disappointing to see her kind of wilt in the final.

Heck no serena doesn't need to lose weight... she's a physical specimen with hardly any fat... whoever said that's she's put on a bit of fat is crazy... she is a ripped out athletic woman that has just lost her confidence and aggressiveness. weight is never the issue with the williams' sisters.....

Uhum....she showed a bit more fight in that second-set..too bad she couldnīt convert those bpīs. Might have been a turn-around.
