This is a real tough draw- potential opponents include Venus Williams in the fourth round, Anastasia Myskina in the quarters and Serena Williams in the semi final. If Maria can make it through that lot, she will receive even more plaudits than she did for winning Wimbledon, as this is a far tougher draw, on a surface that Maria is yet to play a competitive match on this year.

Best of luck to her, as always! :yeah:

I hope somebody convinces them to play doubles together. Just for the heck (and the obvious aesthetic advantage) of it. With those matching Nike dresses and shoes, blonde ponytails, the opponents wouldn't know who/what hit them.

Finally an article confirming Marias good form in her opening match.
Wimbledon Champion Shines Brightly in Acura Classic Debut

Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova dazzled a capacity crowd of over 6,500 at the Acura Classic as she blasted her way past American qualifier Lilia Osterloh, 6-3, 6-3, in a Tuesday night match at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

Playing in her first tournament since winning Wimbledon, the sixth-seeded Russian used an early service break on her way to winning the first set, 6-3 as the crowd was still settling in on Stadium Court.

In the second set, Sharapova took a 4-1 lead and looked on her way to a routine victory.

Osterloh had different thoughts as she took advantage of two double faults by Sharapova to break serve.

The American got to 3-4 after holding serve.

In the eighth game of the second set, Sharapova got through a 12-point game and even though she committed two more double faults, the Russian was able to hold serve for a 5-3 lead.

Osterloh then served to stay in the match, but the match was as good as over as Sharapova tuned-up her return game and broke at love. On match point, she slammed a forehand winner down the line to the delight of the crowd.

Following her victory, Sharapova was asked about playing in front of the large crowd. “It was exciting. As long as I can bring the WTA Tour to a higher level and for people to enjoy the tennis and especially for the kids…it’s good to go out there and show your tennis.”

No doubt about it! Daniela and Maria playing as your opponents --- taking into account the lesbian, tennis player stereotype --- would be like playing against your "wet dream". Far too distracting, players would be too busy wiping drool from their mouths to do anything constructive, except picture themselves inbetween a Daniela/Maria sandwich!

Gisela Dulko (ARG) vs. ^Mary Pierce (FRA) 6-3,k 1-1 *40-15 Double Break Point Dulko

Sharapova Wins – Serena Highlights Acura Classic Night Session

Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova roared into the Acura Classic quarterfinals as she swept past Argentina's Gisela Dulko, 6-0, 6-1, in an afternoon match on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

Top-seeded Serena Williams is scheduled to play on Stadium Court at 7 p.m. in a third-round match against Elena Bovina of Russia.

In action earlier today, third-seeded Anastasia Myskina of Russia and fourth-seeded American Lindsay Davenport easily won their third-round matches to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals.

Match summary from 3rd Round match:

Sharapova Blazes Trail Into Quarterfinals

If you come to watch Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova at the Acura Classic, don’t be late. (I like that  )

On Thursday afternoon at the La Costa Resort and Spa, the 17-year-old Russian needed only 44 minutes to dispose of Gisela Dulko of Argentina, 6-0, 6-1, in a third-round match.

Sharapova, who will play fellow Russian Anastasia Myskina in Friday’s quarterfinals, lost only six points in winning the first set at love in 18 minutes.

Dulko got on the scoreboard when she held serve in the third game of the second set to the delight of the large Stadium Court crowd, which gave the Argentine a loud round of applause.

'With the score at 2-1 in Sharapova's favor, fans tried to get Dulko fired up in the second set. Sharapova kept her concentration and continued to roll as the tall, hard-hitting Russian won the last four games.

Dulko fought off two match points as she served to stay in the match at 1-5, but Sharapova closed out the match on her third match point.

I feel for you guys about the coverage; but at least you had a slim chance of seeing tomorrow's match. Us poor schmucks in Canada got nadda, nothing, zilch! Who cries for us, huh? :sobbing:

Well, whoever pierced her left ear deserves to be tarred and feathered. That left earring looks ready to fall.

Today is the day, that Maria will change the percentages of h2h with Myskina.... Today, Mari will show the world who she really is.... and who she can be

Masha lost to Nastya in a pretty disappointing way.
7-5, 6-2 straight sets loss. She was up a break in the 1st set, had a setpoint which she was not able to convert. From that point she lost 9 games in a row. Hard reality check, it should boost her motivation and competitive fire.

Are you a Sharapova fan?
Why do you say it was disappointing, it was the same as her last two wins but with the result reversed.

She didn't make any promises that I am aware of so perhaps she hoped to win but was not too disappointed to be beaten by a better palyer. If you saw the match, can you say where she was beaten? Was it obvious?

Yes I too would be interested to know in which areas Maria was beaten.
Anyone with some stats?

Id say it was a little disappointing simply because of the position Maria was in in the 1st set.
Its definitely no disgrace though to lose to Myskina who is a more experienced and seasoned player and seems to have a game that Maria finds hard to counter.
She will only learn from this. :)

Yes, I'm her fan. But not to the extent of declaring that wins are equal to losses :) Of course I'm disappointed. Should I rejoice or be indifferent? This is not EOTW, considering all the circumstances I'm staying positive but losses hurt, you're not going to do anything about it.

she made too many errors. simple as that. she was "erratic". you cant be erratic against the best players and hope to win. but there will be many other chances. remember: nastya's been around for a long time, and maria's only reletively new on the scen compared to her. she'll get stronger, better, faster, all that. i think that inexperiance played against her that time.

Yes it hurt, but do you know what is worse, thinking that she would be feeling that she let some of her fans down.

Ten minutes after the match ended I was over it, perhaps 23 seconds before the match ended.
The best thing about it was not having to have put in all the hard work training. So yes I'm disappointed, not delighted, but there must be a few people who are still celebrating. Boo them. It will be different next time or the time after that.
If it was me, I probably would have let her win rather than suffer defeat.
