:D Good draw for Lindsay I would say. Sprem is in her half and also Schynder who can be a tricky customer but nothing Linds can't cope with including Amelie,.

Lindsay will get by sprem easily, just because she played great at wimbledon doesn't mean she will follow it up with great results, and i don't think any of the other players really cause a threat to her

Can she make it a California Sweep??

Davenport Sears Serena; to go for 2nd California Triple
Williams: ĎItís the second time Iíve tried to commit suicide out thereí

By Matthew Cronin
********************

Susan Mullane/Camerawork USA
Davenport is ona 9-match win streak.
FROM THE JPMORGAN CHASE OPEN IN CARSON,CA. Ė Maybe she needed to kick herself in the shorts or maybe someone else did. Whatever the case, since falling miserably and hurt in the fourth round of Roland Garros to Elena Dementieva, a now healthy Lindsay Davenport has played the best tennis of anyone on tour over the past five weeks and is now a serious threat to win her second "California Triple" and go on to New York and win her second US Open crown.

In her 6-1, 6-3 devastation of top seed Serena Williams to win her fourth JPMorgan Chase Open title Sunday, Davenport played as consistent and heady of a match against an elite player than she has in four years. She was more powerful, accurate, smarter and actually moved better than the once fleet number one.

She came into the contest with a 2-9 record against Serena and immediately looked like it was she who had dominated the rivalry. She was in complete control of the first set and every time she was threatened in the second set, tightened her game into a sailorís knot. And, just like she did against Venus last week at Stanford, she showed a lot more confidence on the monumental points.

"Iíve had a tough time playing the Williams than last four years," said Davenport, who only committed 12 unforced errors to 29 from Williams. "Going out and playing good tennis and being able to withstand two full weeks of tennis against good players is great. Iím building and want to keep the momentum going."

If Serena had managed to win any of her three break points in the match's final game, the contest could have turned around, but she doesnít have complete strength in her legs yet, is vulnerable on her forehand side and isnít returning with confidence. Predictably, she was sickened by her performance.
"I played like a nightmare," William said. "I tried to commit suicide out there. I pretty much killed myself. I had a awful, horrendous, terrible, miserable and horrible day."

On the first break point in the final game, Davenport forced Serena into a forehand error. On the second one, she cracked a 109-serve and then took a sitter and rifled a backhand down the line. But it was the third break point that mattered most and illustrated where they both are with their games, when in the longest rally of the match, Davenport hung with Serena in an exhausting rally and finally cut Serenaís legs out from under with a hard forehand. A tired Serena ended up doing a split on the baking court and committed a forehand error. The match was over two points later when she couldnít lift a backhand over the net.

"I feel like the last 10 months Iíve been building a stronger base physically, can withstand the power and run down some balls," said Davenport, who is now traveling with a trainer, Todd Norman, and a physical therapist, Laura Eby said. "I have a lot of inner confidence now."

Davenport crushed Sprem last time, but I think that was Davenport's best match of the year. She was on fire and then some. If her level is a bit lower if and when they play in the second round, it could be tough because Sprem can hit just as hard. Still, Sprem is more comfortable on clay and Davenport has so much confidence right now. After that, I think she has a clear draw until the semis, where either Dementieva or Mauresmo will be waiting. Davenport has a great overall record against both and, if it's Dementieva, you know she will be looking for revenge after that embarassing loss in Paris. And then maybe a rematch with Serena in the finals... or, better yet, Sharapova. I sooooo want to see her destroy the Russian and prove that she should have won Wimbledon, had it not been for the rain.

Keep up the fine form and keeping wearing that sexy yellow jacket, Lindsay! :D :bounce:

I'm sure she'll beat Sprem, and I hope to see Conchita Martinez in the 3rd round, because Conchita leads in the head to head record, so I want Lindsay to pulverize Conchita!!!!!!!!!I would like to see Lindsay beat Amelie int the semi and Serena(or Maria, who knows...) in the final of course!!!!!!!!GO LINDSAY

Sprem can be hideous when she's off. I mean bad. But if she's on, she will cause problems. But, Lindsay is playing the best tennis I've seen her play in four years. So, hopefully she can cruise.

I'm going to San Diego tomorrow. Hopefully she'll be playing. :)

I agree with you there Leo.

Lindsay went into that match knowing how well she had to play inorder to win. Lindsay knew that beating Venus Williams at Wimbledon wasn't an easy feat (Sprem had to win in two tie-break sets). Whatever, Lindsay will play pretty competantly against Sprem and I have no doubt that in the form Lindsay is in, that she will come through that match comfortably.

It is sad for Sprem to have such an early exit after such a great Wimbledon, but infortunately the same happened with Alex Stevenson back in 1999 after Lindsay trashed her in the Semi's of Wimbledon.

Lindsay has a great draw and there are few people in that half that could trouble her. In fact, she has a winning record against all of them! Her closest rival might come in the form of Amelie, but Lindsay has already beaten her this year, on clay which is Lindsay's weekest surface!

Let's go Lindsay!:bounce:

Two thing really would have to stop Lindsay from not getting to the final.

1. She would have to have a bad day and her opponent playing well.

2. She is fatigued and or injured.

Lindsay is on fire and I don't see a single player in her draw that she would fear at this point considering who she has beaten the past two weeks.

Seeing Maria orSerena in the final with her would be a great match to see.

Okay, I'm gonig tonight to her match. I didn't see her hitting yesterday. I'll be taking lots of pictures.

I saw Lindsay in Carson defeat Serena. It was amazing. the first set she made almost no unforced errors. The second set she showed tons of gut when facing break points. She's palying amazing guys. I took many pictures which I will post later this week.

have fun! 1 question, if she wins tonight will she over take amelie in the world rankings??

gossipcom
Jul 29th, 2004, 01:45 AM
She won't overtake Amelie unless she gets to the semi-final - the reason is Lindsay will lose over 162 points because she made the SF last year - but at the same time this year it is a Tier I event and not Tier II so more points are on offer the further you go into the tournament.

Leo_DFP
Jul 29th, 2004, 02:50 AM
Ah, that's true. Thanks gossip.

Sprem leads Davenport 4-3* and so far Davenport has been in Sprem's service games with 30-30 and Deuce, and possibly with break points, but she is yet to break. :( On the other hand, she does seem to be holding serve relatively easily.

I heard that if Lindsay reaches the quarters, she will definitely pass Kim this week, at least. I'm not sure what she would have to do to pass Amelie and Anastasia, but she definitely has a good chance this week to get the #2 ranking and, with that, hopefully secure a Top 4 seeding at the US Open. I must admit that after being robbed of a rightful Top 4 seedings in these past three Slams because of the Willies' special seedings, it'd be a relief for me to see her avoid that #5 once again and be seeded where she should be.

gossipcom
Jul 29th, 2004, 05:34 AM
She shouldn't have a prob with a Top 4 seeding for the US Open *touch wood*

Well she won her match against Sprem so she's managed to extend her lead at the top of the Race to the WTA Champs.

Okay here's the outlook to do with Rankings for 1 through to 5 (before the tournament started)

1. Justine H-H - 4916
2. Amelie Mauresmo - 4031
3. Kim Clijsters - 3920
4. Lindsay Davenport - 3813
5. Anastasia Myskina - 3681

Winner of tournament receives 300 points + quality points, etc.

So at this moment after 2nd round action it is as follows:

1. Justine H-H - 4916
2. Amelie Mauresmo - 4032
3. Kim Clijsters - 3920
4. Lindsay Davenport - 3813 + at least 25 points (3838 points)
5. Anastasia Myskina - 3727

Frederic
Jul 29th, 2004, 12:08 PM
Hey!!! Why does Lindsay loose points?? I don't understand!!! I'm sure she'll be at least in the semis!!! And she went in semis last year, so she won't loose points at all, even if it becomes a Tier I event... WTA ranking is very hazardous....

gossipcom
Jul 29th, 2004, 12:46 PM
Okay look at it this way:

Even if you make the SF last year and you make it the following year you are not guaranteed the same no of points, rankings change therefore points change.

Before a tournament begins the player is stripped of the points they earned from the tournament the year before - if they're injured, they're stripped completely - if they play, the points they earn from this year will replace the ones stripped.

Here's the big part of why Lindsay won't earn as many points as last year even if *fingers crossed* she gets to the SF and beyond.

The big seeds in her half of the draw have been eliminated - two big ones in Mauresmo and Suarez - both players (esp. Mauresmo) would have given good quality points if beaten - hence why Molik got the amount she did for being Mauresmo in the 2nd round.

So if Lindsay manages to win through to the SF it means it'll be most likely through the below path:

Sprem
Martinez
Benesova
Sugiyama
Dementieva / Molik

Now because of this it means Mauresmo, Suarez, Shaughnessy - any of those players would have given Lindsay extra points.

One thing that does go in her favour is she played the highest non-seeded player in the 2nd round in Sprem, which means she will get quality points.

I'll stop rambling now :)

Let's have revenge on Dementieva now. For some reason she is bothersome to Lindsay. I want quick match.

gossipcom
Jul 31st, 2004, 12:55 AM
Dementieva's always been a bogey player for Lindsay - so if she can beat her I'd say she has more than a v. good shot at winning this tournament.

Updated Rankings after QF (still awaiting result of Myskina / Sharapova match)

1. Justine H-H - 4916
2. Amelie Mauresmo - 4032
3. Lindsay Davenport - 4016
4. Kim Clijsters - 3920
5. Anastasia Myskina - 3783

Note Myskina will get more points if she beats Sharapova because she's the highest ranked QF player left in the draw.

If Lindsay beats Elena tomorrow she will get some quality points because of Dementieva's no 6 ranking.

Worse case scenario Lindsay will remain in no 4 position - best case scenario she will be in no 2.

One thing is for sure she will still be in the lead for the Race to the WTA Champs since she has an over 600 point lead of 2nd position and over 1200 point lead on 8th position (which should remain over 1000 at the end of the tournament).

Yes, she did it, but in my opinion, Lindsay played well in the beginning of the first set, after, she didn't play really well!!! She couldn't hit a winner at all!!! And Elena began to make Lindsay run. I think that Lindsay is too tired to play as well as she did last few weeks. She doesn't move well anymore and seems to be annoyed by her knee again. I think that if she wants to win, she will have to rise her level, and stay positive!!!! Go Lindsay!!!!!!!!!!!!!
