View Full Version : Saturday report - Qualifying

I got there at about 11:00 and saw the first five games of Alex Stevenson vs. Lilia Osterloh. Not much happening there. Apparently Alex retired in the second set with a shoulder injury.

I left to go see the draw ceremony downstairs in the media center. Laura Ceccarelli is the tour supervisor (LOVE her!) and she did the draw with Ashley Harkleroad as the player representative. Anyone who saws draws are fixed needs to witness a draw ceremony. They placed Serena and Venus at #1 and #2, respectively. They had a bunch of what looked like poker chips with numbers on one side and WTA on the other. They were taken and placed number side down and switched around a la shell game and Ashley picked either #3 or #4 to go in the top half (#4 in this case). They placed the rest of the top #8 seeds in this manner. They then went section by section and Ashley picked each chip and Laura would announce who that number was according to the entry list. It was quite long and boring after a while. A little kid who was there got to pick a few as well. It got funny near the end because Ashley's number hadn't come up yet and Venus Williams was lurking down at the bottom of the draw. She ended up getting Asagoe in the first round and then the winner plays Venus in the second. I told her at least it wasn't first round and she laughed. She was very nice during the whole thing and didn't act stuck up at all. I talked to Laura a bit after the draw and was asking her what the process was if someone else pulled out, etc. She was really nice and helpful. She's definitely the most personable of the WTA supervisors I've been around.

I headed back out to the matches and saw Alex Stevenson and her mom coming in after her retirement from her match. She looked her usual chipper self (except not) and I knew immediately she had lost. Lilia Osterlah came by soon after followed by a huge following of family members. I checked out the stadium court for a minute and saw a tour of VIPS being led around and the last one to pass me was Mayor Dinkens from NYC. He's so nice....we exchanged greetings. He also says "Hi" to everyone. Also saw Petrova and Sveta K. hanging around. Also, Chanda Rubin and Benny walked by and the little kid who helped with the draw got her autograph. I like Chanda, but she really can be a bit gruff with fans. She signed, but was not very pleasant about it.

Dechy and Cara Black were just finishing up practice when I went out. Marion Bartoli and her dad came on court after them. Man, she has really lost some weight since I saw her last summer. Of course, the girl was out on the practice court for a long time today, so that might explain it.

Chanda came out and started hitting with Angela Haynes. Chanda seemed to be having trouble with her right shoulder, especially on her serve. She kept flexing her shoulder and she and Benny were talking about her mobility of her shoulder.

Anglea Haynes looks awesome. She really bulked up since I last saw her. I hope she does well in qualifying. After Angela left to get ready for her match (which ended in a W/O win against Tu), Vera Zvonareva came out and took over hitting with Chanda.

Rennae Stubbs was out and about watching some Q matches. She ended up going to hit with Cara Black after a while. I also saw Marissa Irvin hitting before her match. I was watching Skavronskaya vs. Nguyen and Skavronskaya had to be treated early on in the match for heat exhaustion (it was like 3-2 or something). She had the bags of ice under her arms and on her legs and was given a bunch to drink. She ended up going on and eventually won the match. The other match I saw part of was Amber Liu vs. Castellvi. Wasn't impressed much by either of them unfortunately. Castellivi got a bad call and then seemed to kick it up a bit.

I was hella hot, so I decided to get out of there. I'm not sure if I'm going back tomorrow. Otherwise, I'll be going back next on Tuesday, then probably Thursday (maybe Wed. night) and then Saturday.

I'll get some photos up tomorrow afternoon if I don't go. I'll post more if I remember anything else.

Bad omen for Chanda, I mean, she was injury while practice at here last year and then withdrew. It was same shoulder!

Good stuff. I'm a little jealous Osterloh wound up in your tournament instead of mine this week. :)
