View Full Version : Lindsay at Stanford

Putting up this thread because I'm getting this feeling that Lindsay is going to win this tournament. I got this feeling before Amelia Island this year, and she won. Let's cheer now. Win. Yay.

Go Lindsay to this title

If they both make it to the final and play the way they have this year, Lindsay should beat Venus - what a confidence boost! GO LINDSAY

If they both play current form and Lindsay removes her brain, she would crush Venus.

I agree......during Wimbledon, Lindsay was on fire! Lindsay can beat Venus and I think it would get rid of all that 'fear' she has mentally when playing vs. Venus.

Let's go Lindsay!!! :woohoo:

Let's go Lindsay and repeat the summer of 98, i have all the confidence in you to win the tournament, and if she met Venus, with the way they're both playing, lindsay would win :bounce:

Forgive my ignorance on this one but is Stanford in California? If so is it close enough to commute ( get the bus ) home? I think it's pretty obvious that she now hates traveling so playing close to home will be a big plus to Lindsay's motivation.

Jul 9th, 2004, 07:59 AM
it is california and i think she does stay at home when she's playing there (not sure though) :)

She does stay at home for this tourney.
Go Lindsay - you can win this

Andrew.

Another note: Lindsay picks up free points for this tourney because she didn't play last year due to her foot.

This is good news about the free points. I had forgotten she did not play this last year. Come on Linds lets have some free points here

8- Maria Vento-Kabchi (VEN) vs. Eleni Daniilidou (GRE)
Iveta Benesova (CZE) vs. Anca Barna (GER)
Qualifier vs. Jelena Kostanic (CRO)
4- Francesca Schiavone (ITA) - bye

7- Meghann Shaughnessy (USA) vs. Qualifier
Lubomira Kurhajcova (SVK) vs. Claudine Schaul (LUX)
Petra Mandula (HUN) vs. Qualifier
2- Lindsay Davenport (USA) - bye

That's a pretty nice draw. She'll have to watch out for Shaughnessy, who can be a bit of a terror on hardcourts, but other than that she should be fine.

Why do you think that?

Andrew.

She's scheduled to play four weeks in a row, and I just don't see in happening.

LindsayRulez
Jul 10th, 2004, 10:14 PM
Apparently people have seen Venus practicing at Stanford, so I think it's a little late for her to pull out now. This is also a great chance for her to get to a final against Lindsay; without Venus in the draw, Lindsay could win this tournament just playing with her left hand.

Andrew.
Jul 10th, 2004, 11:25 PM
theres also schaul in the quarterfinal she beat lindsay at strasbourg and it was quite upsetting
Shaul isn't all that. Apparently Lindsay also played like chicken shit that day.

I think we are all missing the point with this one. Lindsay's main targets this year were Wimbledon and the USA Open. Despite being in tremendous form she blew Wimbledon. In Lindsay's mind this tournament will be no more than a preparation for possibly her final Grand Slam. She NEEDS to play Venus. What's the point of winning a tournament playing against player's she always beats. Lindsay needs the confidence of beating the top players regularly this would give her that extra mental toughness when the chips are down.

Andrew.
Jul 11th, 2004, 01:21 PM
I'm also looking at this as part of her race to number one. Right now, because of Myskina's Wimbledon and poor scheduling this summer, the race for year end number one will pretty much come down to Lindsay vs. Mauresmo. I don't care who she beats or how she does it, as long as she gets the points. And I think the ranking does mean more to her than she leads everyone to believe.

Nikki

Lindsay doesn't like playing on clay but loves hardcourts so would have the upper hand.

I hope you have a really good week no matter what happens in the tennis. I wish I was going to sunny California this week! Have you sorted out a sign yet? Getting back to the tennis, although I want Lindsay to win the tournament, win the USA Open and finish the year ( and career? ) as no 1 I don't want her to achieve those things by default. If she is the best player in the world then she should fear no one, they should fear Lindsay. To prove she is the best she has to play and beat the best. I want Lindsay to play and beat Venus in the final. Champions rise to challenges. One question for someone, Lindsay is ranked 5th in the world how many times has she beaten a player ranked above her this year? I genuinely don't know the answer to that but suspect the answer is not many. She needs tough matches.

Andrew.
Jul 11th, 2004, 06:58 PM
Lindsay has defeated a player ranked higher than her once, at Amelie Island where she beat Mauresmo. But she's only played someone ranked higher than her two other times, and that was the world number one.

Andrew, thanks for that, I think everyone will agree that's not form which merits No 1 status or good preparation for winning the big matches at Grand Slams. Everyone should stop worrying, Lindsay can and should beat Venus when they meet. Finally, are we all showing a lack of confidence in Lindsay ( can't think why :) ) by hoping someone else beats all her tough opponents?

Whenever I am in a tournament, I always hope that the higher seed is knocked out that I have to play against. Nothing wrong with that.

Mauresmo has a very similar record. Only beat a higher ranked player once. She's going to be number one.

i don't think venus will pull out because as andrew said, people have seen her practicing, and i am looking forward to a Lindsay vs. Venus final. Lindsay should win this tournament because she has been playing better than Venus. If she would beat Venus then that would give her alot of confidence for the rest of the summer, i believe in Lindsay and know she can win this tournament. :bounce:

This sign is corny but as no one else has put up an idea. What about. In reference to her forthcoming retirement.

I was trying to think of something that would include the letters ESPN at the beginning; as they are televising the semis and finals, I figure that they would have to show us! But like Andrew said, it will probably be hard to read a lot of text, so maybe just a "go Lindsay!" and some pictures?

Thanks for the input

Lindsay will play Lioudmila Skavronskaia, who upset Petra Mandula. This young Russian is on a 16 match win streak, but I don't think she has enough to hurt our Lindsay. GO LINDSAY!

Andrew.
Jul 13th, 2004, 01:47 PM
That's not a bad opening match. Skavronskaia is a twenty-something Russian, who doesn't have any excellent results to speak of other than two quarterfinal appearances at Tashkent. She's on a win streak though, so she could be dangerous. I still say Lindsay in two pretty easy sets.

Putting up this thread because I'm getting this feeling that Lindsay is going to win this tournament. I got this feeling before Amelia Island this year, and she won. Let's cheer now. Win. Yay.
I love when you get your feelings. :D

Congrats to Lindsay on beating a Williams in such dramatic fashion, proving your physical stamina and mental strength by winning 7-6(4) in the 3rd, and on taking your third BOTW title! :D

This tremendous win will give her confidence going into the US Open that she can beat the best and once again be the best ;). Not just that, but the year-end #1 ranking is in sight now that she is #1 in the Race. Go for it, Linds!

I'm almsot ashamed to say that I've watched the match again already, just a day after it was played and I saw it live. Well, it's a lot easier to watch and enjoy when your palms aren't sweaty, when your heart isn't racing incredibly fast, and when you're not pacing around the room and from room to room.

I think I'll make that fabulous reaction pic of Lindsay be my avatar on MTF. :)

Good luck in LA! Beat Venus and Serena back to back for the title, and also that bitch Petrova who thinks she has a better serve than you.

P.S. Lindsay said after the match that this win has inspired her to keep playing and not retire just yet. I just knew she would say something like that. Her statements about reitrement seem to change with her mood and her results. But I'm confident that Davenport will play the 2005, if her body allows her to. If she can play all the evnts she wants for the rest of the year, be healthy, and play well, then she will come back next year. But the wrist and knee are definitely worrying me.

One more comment: WTF did Lindsay opt not to play the Olympics? It's the fucking Olympics, woman! You should have gone and brought back another Medal, gold or otherwise. That is the single worst scheduling decision by Lindsay this year and a major disappointment for me.
