And about time too!

She is Irish and I thought I might get a row for putting it in the British forum, so she gets one all to herself. She broke the Top 200 last year before getting an ankle injury that halted her progress. She is back in form at the Los Gatos $50K tournament in America at the moment!

Los Gatos $50K

R1: def. (2) Sofia Arvidsson SWE 6-3 6-3
R2: def. Viktoriya Kutuzova UKR 6-1 6-1
QF: def. (8) Lilia Osterloh USA 6-3 7-5
SF: vs (7) Lioudmila Skavronskaia RUS

Cheer her on please! :)

She's fallen to around 270 in the rankings though

Yes Kelly is a lot better than her ranking at the moment, but i was quite pleased to see her lose to Karen Paterson, who needed the points more

Hopefully Kelly can pick up some more form in Sunderland, where she must be entered.

You're right. Kelly won 7-5,6-2 in 2003. wtatour website wrong again (has them tied at 0-0).
So this time Chanelle wins 6-3,7-6(5).

Yeah, I think she can definitely get back into the top 200. Top 150 may be pushing it. I haven't seen her play for about 3 years. Her form seems to be OK at the moment though, so hopefully she can get back up there. She's not that far off getting into the Grand Slam qualies.

Waikoloa Q2:
(3)Kelly d. Christina Fusano (USA) - 6-1,7-5

Next up she plays:
(6)Sheng-Nan Sun d. Tomoko Yonemura (JPN) - 6-2,3-6,6-1.
Shengnan is a 19 y.o Chinese player currently at a career best of 320.

Doubles 1r:
440-Kelly/Esperon d. 4/283-Argeri/Sobral - 3-6,6-2,6-3

Argeri & Sobral are 2 of the worst sports on tour!! So it's always nice to beat opponents like that!!
Should be an easier QF match for Kelly & Esperon against a lower ranked pair or a wc pair.

Well done Kelly!
I'd never heard of Sun but I was a bit worried when I had a look at her results. Kirkland will be much tougher though.
I think she's still a long way off making grand slam qualies again, would need to get to about 210 in rankings.
Didnt know that about Argeri/Sobral, they've got their revenge for Mexico City final :) Seems like a fairly good partnership Kelly has with Soledad

And get that doubles rank back up Kelly! If Claire Curran can break top hundred I'm sure we could have a second Irish woman there too.

ROCKFORD — Kelly Liggan was born in Ireland, grew up in Spain and has a mother who lives in England.

“So my accent is all over the place,” she said.

Her tennis game, though, was together Tuesday in the first round of the main draw of the SwedishAmerican Tennis Classic. Liggan, ranked 285th, breezed through a 6-1, 6-0 win over Eva Fislova.

Fislova, the top-ranked qualifier who beat Alexandra Stevenson on Sunday, spent much of the match berating herself and the referees. Liggan, meanwhile, was playing almost flawlessly.

“I don’t want to think about it,” Liggan said. “It was too good to be true.”

Liggan lost to Jessica Kirkland in three sets in Waikoloa, Hawaii, and Kirkland went on to beat Edina Gallovits, the Classic’s top seed, in straight sets.

“I had match point on her, too,” Liggan said of Kirkland. “So that gave me a lot of confidence coming into this tournament.”

From memory, it was the late 90's when I first saw Kelly play (at the Australian $25k's). I'm pretty sure if I'd heard of her before that it would've been close to the time I first saw her.
So really, I only became a fan after seeing her play.
I'm 1/2 Irish (Dad moved to Aus when he was 14), so I've been hoping we'd get an Irish player get right up in the rankings.
I don't hold much hope for Rachael Dillon, so it looks like Kelly is our only hope.

This will be Kelly's eighth semi final at 25K (She also recahed a semi final at 50K in Los Gatos California in 04)
Her first three semis were all in Mexico. She has also reached three semis in the UK and one in Italy. Unfortunately she has only progressed to the final in one of these tournaments. That win was against Leanne Baker 6-3 6-0 on grass in Felixstowe in 2002.
Dubois, her semi opponent, is defending champion here but I'm sure Kelly will give her a great match this time

ROCKFORD — Kelly Liggan turns 27 today.

If she was looking for an early gift from No. 5 seed Stephanie DuBois in Saturday’s semifinal of the SwedishAmerican Tennis Classic, she came to the wrong place.

“Thanks for the birthday present,” Liggan said after losing 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to the defending champion in two hours.

It was the first three-setter for Liggan this week.

“And I was feeling it in the third,” she said. “She’s very confident on these courts, and when you play with confidence you can do anything.”

DuBois only seemed to get stronger after the second set, finishing off Liggan on match point with three straight blistering backhands to her backhand and a fourth backhand that hugged the forehand line.

Here is the story ;)

Here at the Bell Challenge, they always have a tough time to find ballboys for the monday morning matches, because everyone has school. So one year, me and my father ballboyed together for the final qualy match, in which Kelly was playing. So I was at the net or course, and my father was on the back wall. Once a ball hit the wall and started coming back to the net, so my father started running for it, but then kelly picked the ball with her hand, and gently hit my father on the ass with her racket saying like: It's ok, don't lose all your energy oldie ;)

I really like Kelly, she is such a sweetheart and her game is amazing. Love her backhand!

After her great last tournament Kelly is back as 4th seed in 25k challenger valladolid spain. She has had a good win in the first round against Cordenaeu who just won a 25k challenger beating a lot of good players along the way.
Her next match is against Chvojkova who upset Kelly in Canada earlier in the year.
Good luck Kelly!

Well Kelly is on a great run of form at the moment. And btw where are all her supporters who should be cheering her on??!!
She followed up her first win in Vigo by winning in Coimbra the next week. So she should be up to approx 184 in the ranks tomorrow, which is only three places below her career high.
Plus TBE has just confirmed to me that she has made the qualy list for the US Open. Her first grand slam in 2 years. Lets hope she can keep up her good form next week.
Hoping she's in for a long stay in top 200 or to go higher.

Well whatever injury Kelly got in new york shes had to withdraw from the next two weeks of tournaments, so the earliest she will prob be back is in Troy on the week of Oct 2nd. The last time she went into the top 200 she got injured straight away as well, and by the time she came back a lot of her points had dropped off :(

Irish Times names Liggan as Sportswoman of the Month for August

The Irish Times has announced that Kelly Liggan is the winner of the August 2006 Sportswoman of the Month award, see article reprint below:

Liggan gets lift from back-to-back victories
by Mary Hannigan, The Irish Times

Kelly Liggan has become accustomed to experiencing extreme highs and lows in her professional career, but in a three-week period in August, she felt like she had gone through it all.

From the highs of winning back-to-back tournaments in Spain and Portugal to the desperate dissapointment of having to retire injured from her US Open qualifier, when she was leading 4-3 in the opening set, it has been a test of character for the Irish Number one.

And, having had to battle back from several injuries during her career, including a fractured ankle, Liggan is now out of action for a month, just as she was regaining lost ground in the world rankings. Liggan slipped a disc when leading Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska at Flushing Meadows, thus ending her dreams of reaching the main draw.

"It was very tough because coming off winning two tournaments I went there with a lot of confidence", said the 27 year-old. "It was bad luck, I know that, but I have to take the positives from it all, I was playing my best tennis ever and I think I can get back to that. It's just a case of keeping working hard".

Liggan, who was born in Ireland but grew up in Spain, is based in Marbella (hence her admission "my accent is all over the place") and it is to the resort she has returned to recover from her injury. "I'm getting better slowly, I should be back within a month, so that's not too bad, it could have been a lot worse".

Her form in early August, when she won two $25,000 International Tennis Federation hard-court tournaments (the third and fourth ITF titles of her career), is, she says, what is keeping her spirits up, making her all the more eager to return to action. The first of the wins came in Vigo, Spain, when, seeded fourth, she took the title without dropping a set in five rounds.

A week later, in Coimbra, Portugal, where she was the eight seed, she beat top seed Arantxa Parra Santoja 6-0, 6-0 in the quarter-finals, going on to complete her back-to-back victories with a straight-sets win over Romanian Monica Niculescu in the final.

Liggan collected 50 ranking points from the two successes, lifting her to 183 in the world rankings, just two places short of her highest ever placing in September 2003. By Mauresmo and Sharapova standards the ranking might be modest; by Irish standards it's significantly more than creditable.

"August was brilliant, it just felt like all my hard work had paid off, it really was the best tennis I had ever played" she said. "A lot of it, I believe, is down to the fact I changed coaches, my coach is now Spanish, a former pro. I just feel I have a really great connection with the guy, he seems to understand me as a person, and I just feel I have a really great connection with the guy, he seems to understand me as a person, and I just feel way more relaxed when I go out to play."

The month ahead, she insits, won't be about relaxation, rather the effort to recover as quickly as possible and get back to playing. It is, though, a break from the ceaseless travelling which has been part of her life for over a decade. "Now that I'm here (in Marbella) I feel 'my god I'm not going anywhere', which is very strange," she laughs. Get thee to the beach. "I will, I will", she promises.

JUST a week after making a massive improvement of 71 places in the WTA singles world rankings, Kelly Liggan has been cruelly laid low with a back injury.

Liggan rose from 254 to 183 in the space of three weeks, thanks to winning two ITF $25,000 tournaments - her first outright successes at that level - and reaching the quarter-final in another similar category tournament.

That left the Ireland No 1 just two places below her career-high figure of 181, set on September 15, 2003. And her major upward move was additionally notable due to the fact that her ranking had tumbled to 330 in August 2005, a figure she had improved on to 287 by the end of the year.

But the Marbella-based player's hopes of surpassing her previous best world position were emphatically dashed when she suffered a slipped disc in her back during the qualifying rounds of the US Open.

Action

As a result, the earliest she can hope of returning to tournament action is not until the middle of next month.

"An injury like this is obviously something you would hope to avoid, but even more so after things had been going so well for me in the previous few weeks," said Liggan, who was tied 3-3 in the first set with Poland's world No 129 Agnieszka Radwanska when she felt the problem with her back.

"I didn't fall, but I felt this acute pain in my back after I stretched for a ball. I immediately got some treatment from the physio, but after trying to play on, there was no way that I could continue and I forfeited the game and the match."

Liggan's injury was so serious that after leaving the court, she was put in a back-brace by a WTA official, and on the journey home she had to use a wheelchair at New York, London and Malaga airports.

However, last Saturday, the 27-year-old right-hander was able to walk without pain for the first time, and if her recovery continues at the same rate, she plans to start hitting next week.

"I've had ultra-sound treatment and soft massage to loosen the back muscles, and that has been a big help," she explained. Finals

Liggan's tournament title successes were recorded in two consecutive weeks last month in the Vigo Open, in Spain, and the Coimbra Open, in Portugal, defeating France's Laura Thorpe (ranked 340) 6-1 6-3, and Romania's Monica Niculescu (ranked 211) 6-0 7-6 (9/7) in the respective finals.

Ironically, her most emphatic victory - 6-0 6-0 - was registered over the highest ranked player she faced over the two weeks, Spain's world No 149 Arantxa Parra-Santona.

Her quarter-final appearance was in the $25,000 Les Contamines Open, in France.

The Irish player's US Open opponent went on to qualify for the main draw, winning her first match before losing 4-6 3-6 to France's Tatiana Golovin, who pushed subsequent champion Maria Sharapova to a 6-7 6-7 scoreline in the quarter-finals

# 2 seed in the qualies.
Has a bye in the 1r, should be fine in the 2r, then in the final round is likely to play former top 100 player Maria Emilia Salerni (ARG) the 12th seed. She's got her ranking back to 306 & has a win over top 100 player Julia Schruff a few weeks ago. Salerni beat Kelly 6-1,6-3 in the US Open qualies 2003.

Same. Loads of points to defend coming up though.
Salerni just beat the # 2 seed in straight sets in the MD. Shows what a crap draw it was for Kelly, especially for $25k qualies draw.
I first saw Kelly play in an Aussie challenger a few years back. She played them a couple of different years. I wish she would again. There's really only 1 player (Dellacqua) in the field who would worry her this year. I guess it costs a bit more to travel here. Sign up for: Globe Headlines e-mail | Breaking News Alerts The daughter of an Irishman and an Englishwoman, she's lived in Spain her whole life, in a southern coastal city (Marbella) that she said is not known for its tennis. She didn't start playing until she was 13, and even then, she only did it as "something to do on the weekends."

"I started playing, and I just was like, 'I really like this. I want to be a professional,' " said Liggan, now 28. "Everyone was like, 'Are you serious? You can't even hit the ball and you're already 15.' I was like, 'So what? Dreams become a reality, you know?' "

Yesterday, her biggest dreams moved a step closer to reality, as the unseeded Liggan showed resilience in winning the final five games of her semifinal match at the inaugural US Pro Circuit Women's 50K Challenger Tournament at the Sportsmen's Tennis Club in Dorchester, coming from behind to beat Chanelle Scheepers, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Her first finals appearance in a 50K event will be against top-seeded Varvara Lepchenko of Uzbekistan this morning at 11, the highlight of a long road back from a slipped disk that sidelined Liggan for four months last fall.

But as badly as she wants to win the title and the $7,315 top prize, yesterday's breakthrough wasn't bad, ensuring Liggan -- ranked 243d in the world entering the event -- a spot in the US Open Qualifying Tournament based on the ranking points she earned. And despite her relatively advanced age, she's still optimistic about bigger breakthroughs.

"I think she's a very young 28-year-old," said her coach, Bill Belser, who's worked with Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Andy Roddick. "I think her dream right now is to try and get herself in the top 100, and give herself a year. I can see that happening."

Yesterday, she must have felt like she was on the court for a year, especially after her three-set, three-hour quarterfinal win Friday left her with tight, heavy legs.

But in a battle of contrasting styles -- Liggan's fiery, emotional play against the stoic, stone-faced South African -- Liggan dug deep in the fifth game of the third set to turn the match.

Down a break, 3-1, after having lost the second set, 6-1, Liggan held serve through three break points and five deuces, then went for the kill, seizing 16 of the next 21 points, the next four games, and the match.

"She definitely had me on the ropes," said Liggan, who'd fallen to Scheepers in straight sets in their only previous meeting, a year and a half ago. "I just hung in there and kept fighting and tried to give some of that Irish blood, kind of fiery temperament that I have out there."

She'll need some more of it today against Lepchenko, who cruised past Indonesia's Sandy Gumulya , 6-2, 6-2, and hasn't dropped a set all tournament.

The doubles final will follow the singles match. Yesterday, Canadian Maureen Drake and American Lindsay Lee-Waters had two match points up, 5-3, in the second set, but they eventually fell to the second-seeded pair of Hungarian Melinda Czink and South African Natalie Grandin, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Czink and Grandin will face the top-seeded tandem of Ipek Senoglu of Turkey and Liga Dekmeijere of Latvia
