Nope! She can't!

She could have a boyfriend, but they would have to be apart all the time and it would be tough maintaining a relationship based on long distance communication.

Don't kill me for this, but I heard a "rumour" --- and ONLY a "RUMOUR" mind you --- that Maria HAD --- dare I say it --- a "girlfriend" before Roland Garros. Yes, that would imply that Maria "plays" for the "other team". What supposedly happened, was that Yuri told Maria that she had to dump her sweetheart to concentrate on her tennis career, and to prevent the media from exploiting that aspect of her life. Taking this with a grain of salt, I happened to see a number of posts on different message boards about this; but I really don't know what to make of it. The source seems to be a friend of someone in Maria's entourage, so who knows... ;)

I'm sure if there was even the slightest truth to these "rumours", the hearts of millions of men around the world would be shattered ; but lesbians around the world would be cheering!

She mentioned she had to thank someone, but she kept that person anonymous. Perhaps, there is someone in her life? Especially she already had thanked her parents and the tennis community for her success... It is possible that this anonymous person is someone she likes... But it's only a theory....

seen where you got this rumour, from one of the Anna K messageboards, me thinks it is just a bit of bitterness from Anna fans that the darling of Russian tennis has been replaced by someone more beautiful, more talented and has the will to win.

[B] Hey, Maria does not have a girlfriend. As a matter of fact, I'm hoping to meet her and change her mind about having a boyfriend, if she doesnt already. I think if we talked and we started hanging out, it would click like that. Anyway, does anyone have her email, because if you do, you are awesome, and I would like it. So I guess I may see her in New York City, and see what I can do.

To clarify, this rumour is just court gossip. The source being someone who has a brother who plays professionally, and this is something that seems to be going around in tennis circles. Like I said before, take this with a grain of salt. A couple of threads I saw it mentioned on are:

Maria Sharapova... (http://www.datalounge.com/datalounge/forums/index.html?thread=3287949&stack=2,14:thread,1:thread)

Maria Sharapova... (http://www.datalounge.com/datalounge/forums/index.html?thread=3419295&stack=2,1,1:thread)

I"m NOT saying this is true; but, I also CAN'T say with certainty that this is not true either. Even if --- hypothetically speaking of course --- Maria happened to be gay; why would it be so hard for people to swallow? The fact that she's only 17, and fits our societal ideals of feminine beauty? No one seems to be in shock when Navratilova and Mauresmo are known to be gay; because they fit the stereotype? There's just as much variation amoung lesbian women, as there are amoung straight women. I'm just saying, that IF she were, she would definitely defy the stereotype. :(

I'm sorry if I posted this, but I didn't mean to cause any conflict or anything. I just wanted to mention something that I've seen here and there. ;)

Damn, if she hasn't got a boyfriend (which I very much doubt - considering her quite obvious beauty), then I'll be the first in line lol. Heck, I can dream!

At least I hope she'll do better than Ana Kournikova has done - dating the pop poof Enrique Iglesias. Just saying the name makes me shiver.

Actually, the $2500 is for all-event ticket with good seats. The daily ticket for the first week could cost about $50 or even less. There're a lot to see at the early round. Also, the cheapest seat for the final costs less than $100.

Your best bet with the US OPen early on in the tournament is buying a grounds pass. This allows you to get in everywhere except for Arthur Ashe stadium. The best matches are on the outer courts. The grounds pass also allows you to enter Louis Armstrong Stadium and the Grandstand. A lot of high seed play on those 2 courts. Maria played there last year.

Young, rich, and powerful girls in Hollywood have no trouble getting into clubs. And I remember when I first got to college. You have to be 18 to get into them. So many of my friends had just turned 18 but some of them were still 17. But sometimes they still got in. Girls can sneak into clubs better than guys. Sometimes, if you just dress really hot, you can get in. It's bad, oh well

I thought that part could be made up myself, but for the rest; it sounds true, but you are right you never know with The Sun. And yeah you have to be 21 to get into clubs, but there are ways getting in even if you are not.

So What is the truth? Is she straight or gay? I am curious because she avoid to tell about her personal life "Do you have a boyfriend or not?" Some asked and her answer was "no my personal life, just keep it for us."
What about the mysterious person whom she said thanks for inspiration her? Is it because it is a girl name that's why she didn't tell?

I've read taht article but I don't believe she'shaving an affair with a 44 year-old man. I'm justnotgonna speculate on anything regarding her personal life until something is confirme. The only thing I know for sure, because I heard it from her own mouth when I was at the Pilot Pen Tennis Street Clinic on July 7, was that she doesn't really have the time to be invovled in a serious relationship. Take that for what you will but thats the only thing I won't speculate on

Did you read the article? I did. I doubt the Sun would be able to imply anything about any 44 year old man if somebody (either him or her) had not mentioned it. Why put a picture in the article if they are just inviting a law suit?

At least now she has the money so this sort of thing will go away.

Yes I read it. Its like the Sun in general.

A load of bollocks.

You may choose to believe that. If someone says "I saw a space ship and an alien impregnated me", you may also say you don't believe it, even if the person who says it believes it and the Sun decides to run the story.

On the other hand, if the newspaper defames someone who claims to be a good Catholic girl, by claiming she had an adulterous relationship with a married man, it would have to be true or legal action could follow.
Admit it, you can do whatever you like as long as you don't get caught. Most people probably don't think badly of her for this, but perhaps I'm different.
Perhaps I read too much into it, but if I'm seeing my doctor the newspaper usually doesn't bother to report it. They certainly wouldn't publish my doctor's photograph.

I live in New York and these kinds of claims are run all the ime without repurcussions. If there were repercussions the NY Post would;ve gone out of business ages ago becuase they're always making these kind of claims and they always seem to be untrue. Tabloid newspapers like the Post or the Sun just run stuff if they think there's a one in a million chance of it being true. I remember other incidents where teh sun has had to famous people having a relationship or an affair and the claims turning out to be totally untrue.

It would have done nothing to her reputation because no one has been foolish enough to believe it.

It would have done nothing to reputation except if it is true and people believe it and that is why it can be damaging. Please don't blame me, I didn't post the link to the original article, and I'm not paying good money to read it again.

However after speaking to the editor at the Sun I find they are sticking by their story. They were not going to run it until the reporter produced the picture of the man it is about. Why would they say fat, balding and 44 year old if they are only saying he is a financial backer? You know how these things a done. A man has a word to the journalist, gives his word of honour as a gentleman that the story is true, and then it gets printed. It may only be over a matter of $1,000 or so, but money is not free in this world. The only thing you get for free is security from the police.

With luck it will all go away before the next match starts.

Edward.
Jul 15th, 2004, 12:29 AM
I am not blaming you and I do respect your opinions and viewpoints. Its just I find it very hard to believe that a girl like Maria would be having a relationship with a fat 44 year old man.

I also find it hard to believe that Maria would risk jeapordising her career and reputation by igniting a scandal of that magnitute. I also find it very hard to believe that her parents would allow her to go ahead with it, fully aware of the risks involved.

Yes I read it. Its like the Sun in general.

A load of bollocks.

So you think so? Really?
Why do you say that? Are you a friend of hers?
Do you know her?

The law may be different in the United States, but in the U.K. you don't even have to prove that something isn't true in a case of libel. You only have to convince the court that something published damages a person's reputation. Maybe if there was doctor's certificate but what would that prove? Is a girl not allowed to have a boyfriend anymore, and what does that mean these days? Not the same thing it did 50 years ago when you were growing up, maybe.

You may not believe it but I do, and I would say so in a court of law. You may contact this board and get my email address if you want confirmation.

I'm sure The Sun didn't do this because they wanted to go on a fishing trip about Maria's private life. The printed it because they believe it is true. Do you know what a sugardaddy is? The man who is named should sue them, but he won't, because dragging it through the courts will only damage her reputation more, and the Sun won't name their source. Editors would rather go to prison than break that rule. No the ball is definitely in Maria's parent's court on this one, but I see it running on and on. Just do a search on google if you don't believe me.

I'm still not sure where in the article where it says that they're having an affair. I saw the words father-figure and mentor but not boyfriend. Being a father0figure or a mentor doesn't translate into lover

Edward.
Jul 16th, 2004, 01:42 PM
I agree with houseoflords.

The Sun is an English tabloid. Maria spends much of her free time in the States. She probably hasn't even read the article. And I'm sure Maria knows like the rest of us that papers make up stories to sell copies.

Incidentally, I would like to read the article again. Does anyone have a working link?

If they are doing it to make money, they will only stop when it costs the editor his job. Justice comes from the courts, not the tabloids.

The link does not exist, so I don't think you can publish it again, but if you want to subscribe you may, and then see the whole article in context. It was the tone of it which was clear to me, but I don't know who wrote it, or if he even spoke to Maria herself. That bit about being a sugar daddy but without the sex is credited to a man, but I'm not so sure if it is a direct quote. Do a search for "Maria Sharapova" and "Sugar daddy" and see what comes up.
The point is that it uses the word sugardaddy, and names Mark Fisher

Here is one page of articles about her, and it has some of the quotes from the story. The rest are really positive, and there are even some nice pics.

Don't you love that face?

The thing about it is that she really is so sweet and innocent she doesn't even know what a sugardaddy is.
http://in.sports.yahoo.com/040706/139/2et30.html

Incidentally, I thought it was Maria's parents who paid for hert to train?
So does she have a boyfriend?

Ahh, poor mandy.

But seriously, maria is not dating this 44 year old, he is a 'father figure' as said earlier.

So let me get this straight, this whole rumour/incident started after Wimbledon because Maria, her parents and this man went out to dinner, and because they were all staying at his house?

Did anybody see them at dinner together? Were Maria and this man there? It all seems quite innocent to me, and not enough to start a story on.

Edward.

Yes in a year or two when she has checked out every night club and rave scene on the international circuit. I wouldn't blame her for wanting to keep her private life private.

I'd like to know whether she considers herself lucky or blames all her hard work because tennis is still a rich person's sport in my opinion, and I can't see myself, or even my own father putting so much time or effort into it. If you don't start young you don't stand a chance, and yet for every Tiger Woods of the sports world there must be a few thousand who put in all that effort for no reward.

I'm guessing that she has quite a number of good friends within the tennis community?

This win has made me personally feel so good about her and tennis for a change, that I really hope she wins a lot more, even if she doesn't manage to beat Venus at Wimbledon next year.

Getting this thread back on topic, and admitting that it is none of our business and purely speculation, the reason I suggested Mark Wellington, is, because if he is gay, and I'm only speculating again, and so is she, and as a guy we sometimes get a feeling about these things, it may be convenient in four or five years for her to marry someone who knows something about tennis, and not someone who will be bored by it.

If anyone would like to take my $500, I won't be paying out before the year 2014, but believe she will be married in about the year 2008 or 2009, quite young in my opinion.

Only my opinion is humble. I am not at all humbled by any of the crap life has thrown at me.

But seriously, I notice you have not offered to take that $500 from me, and it is such a small amount, only half what the operating system of that computer you are using probably cost you.

okay, good, but I'd still take that bet with anyone who wanted to. I'd even bet 1000 to 1 on something if the outcome depended on my winning and I was confident enough, Wimbledon for example. I don't think I'd even see it as a risk.

The name marcova when it goes on the world's tallest building will be better known than that of Sharapova in a few year's time, I can promise you. In fact there are two of them. Think Madonna, think twin towers and you will get the general idea. And my wife? yes she is beautiful and understanding, even though we don't see each other as much as we would like because of my work, she loves tennis even more than I do and she also loves me passionately.
