View Full Version : Sugiyama vs. Tanasugarn - Predictions?

Jun 26th, 2004, 01:14 AM
Perhaps we can call upon our friend VMelb for her expert analysis?

I venture to say that it should be an interesting match. Tammy's record on grass is 41/22 and Ai is 25/25. I don't know what their head to head record is, but I believe this is their first meeting on grass.

I have to like Tammy's chances for making her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. If she keeps her head in the game and has her serve working, it could be very, very good!

What do you all think?

and the tanasugarn spot should begin to LENAD!!!!

head 2 head.. sugiyama leads 3-2.. 5 matches played HC.. last one.. fed cup 2003.. sugiyama won 4-6 / 7-6 / 6-2..

I predict tanasugarn will win 7-6 / 6-4

Well if you don't like them, don't post here.....

I think this has the potential to be a GREAT match - I really hope Tammy can make the Quarter Finals, she is in excellent form.

Good Luck to both players, play your best tennis, and give us a match to remember.

But GO TAMMY ALL THE WAY:bounce: :bounce: :worship: :worship:

Ai Sugiyama will win 57 64 63

Jun 26th, 2004, 03:42 AM
I hope Ai wins but won't be too sad if Tammy wins instead :).

Jun 26th, 2004, 04:07 AM
Tammy is in awesome form . I like her chances.

Jun 26th, 2004, 04:17 AM
Well, I think Ai has better H2H record against Tammy but grass surface favor Tammy's game. I'm pretty sure Tammy will do everything she can do against Ai. She knows playing on grass is her great chance to beat Ai more than other surface.

Last meeting Tammy lost 6-4,3-6,4-6 in Fed Cup play-off 2003 in Japan and she said she played good tennis, moving Ai around from side to side but Ai hit every balls back and finally she hit UE. I think on grass Ai could not do that. I think Tammy is hitting harder than Ai, In the other hand Tammy has to serve well and play aggressive tennis and finish the points quick.

Reaching Wimby QF is Tammy's dream and she will do it. :hearts:

C'mon Tammy.

Go Tammy Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think she should win, Ai has been choking alot lately in matches(For Example Schaul beating her a couple weeks ago), and Tammy on grass is Heaven!!!

Jun 26th, 2004, 06:44 AM
well... I like them both.... but now I prefer Tammy to win...

Jun 26th, 2004, 08:15 AM
Tanasugarn will win in 3

Jun 26th, 2004, 08:34 AM
I'd be really, really surprised if Ai moves through to the QF at Wimby this year.

Anyway, their official H2H is 2-0 in Ai's favour (6-3, 6-3 at Tokyo in '99 and 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 at San Diego in '01) or 3-2 counting all the matches they had (Tammy won at '00 Hopman Cup and '00 Fed Cup, while Ai won at last year's Fed Cup). Both are decent on faster courts, but I agree with jirobkk - Tammy will hit the ball stronger and faster than Ai, not letting her run down those balls.

If this was at RG, Ai would win in straight sets, bagelling Tammy in at least one of them.

Jun 26th, 2004, 08:58 AM
Tammy will win in straight set (but really close.. like 7-6/6-4) :)

Jun 26th, 2004, 10:40 AM
Ai will win 2 set.
She said her condition was the best now in this year.

I watched her 3rd round game... She played incredibly well. She hit forehand, backhand winners from everywhere. I have never seen that strong Ai ever...
so it's scary... but hope Ai can make it to QF/SF/F!

Jun 26th, 2004, 12:33 PM
Ai is really tough ...she's a smart player and if she's in form as ex hopman said....hmmmm...
But I can say this is Tammy's best chance to debut in Grand slam QF.
make ur dream comes true ...Tammy... g'd luck 2 U!

The better will win....evrything could happen and It's really hard to predicted the result of this oriental battle ...!

Very interesting matchup...

I love both players and will be sad for whoever loses. Too close to call but if I had to pick :armed: I'd say Tammy because of the surface.

Good luck to both Ladies

Rose.... long time no see! :D ;)

Tanasugarn vs. Sugiyama:

Finally, Tamarine's completely flat groundies are having some impact on her opponents!
Tammy really has thumped her opponents so far. Groenfeld copped a thrashing, although i am under the impression that simply could not cope with Tammy's shots on Grass (ridiculously flat and low) .... Gorenfeld is a euro topspin powerplayer... she was the perfect warmup for Tamarine on grass :) .... Tammy beats a solid Kleinova in straights... good win, but it still didn't say much about Tammy's form..
Then, we have the big one... Tammy beats Molik in straight sets... dominated the 1st set and then makes a comeback in the 2nd set and wins! - I saw a few points, Tammy was playing solid indeed, especially, to beat Molik she would have to be seeing the ball well with all those big serves coming at her!

Sugiyama had a good win over Janes.... who is obviously a great grass player despite her ranking... Beat an in form Koukalova then beat Bartoli convincingly. Her form has improved steadily. But her draw was reasonably good considering her experience.

Important to remember these two have beem the top 2 asian players for some time now, they have played eachother numerous times and usually had tough long matches.
Both girls know exactly what is coming at them, there is no excuses to go out on court with no game plan.

This match will come down to variety. there is nothing between these girls groundies.
Sugiyama hits the ball harder then Tammy, and has more variety (ie attacking the net, hits slice). Tammy hits the flatter ball, she also goes for more lines and will surely have Ai covering a lot of court.
Ai has apparently been serving very well.... she has a more powerfull and accurate serve then tammy (not to mention more orthodox), but this is tough... Tammy's nasty slice serves are very low... and she hit numerous aces in one of her matches, when her confidence is high... her spin serves are really effective on grass.
Although Ai is more aggressive and slightly more powerfull, I beleive it will be Tammy who will be dictating most of the play, this is a natural tendency for Tammy on grass.
A lot of this is going to be a mentall battle, both girls know they can beat eachother... Tammy will have to establish her dominance early... Ai is simply too dangerous once she gets on top.

I expect a two setter, a very nervous and tight two setter.

Tanasugarn def. Sugiyama 7-5 6-4

I sincerely hope Tammy makes her first Quarter final at Wimby, she deserves it more then any other player on the tour. :)

so it's scary... but hope Ai can make it to QF/SF/F!

This was my thoughts too.

I have seen Ai for a decade or so, but at any moment, was she never so good. She was FINALLY REALLY GREAT on Friday. I could not imagine how she kept losing so easily for the last couple months.

On TV, Kimiko Date was also impressed and commented on how impossible it could be to beat Ai like that.

Well, tooooo bad that two Asian women in great shape have to face each other.

Jun 27th, 2004, 04:44 PM
I know it's not going to be easy for Tammy to beat Ai but my heart says she can do it.

C'mon Tammy! :D

Jun 27th, 2004, 05:24 PM
so exciting! (at least ..for me)

Jun 27th, 2004, 05:55 PM
Tammy will win in two tight sets 7-6 (8-6) 7-5.

Go Tammy. I am sure you can do it.

Jun 27th, 2004, 06:48 PM
I WANT THEM BOTH TO WIN! They will end in a tie and both advance to the Quarterfinals!!!!! YAY!!!!!

Jun 27th, 2004, 11:47 PM
I think that Tammy looks sharp this year at Wimby and I really like her chances against Ai.Her victory in 2 sets against Molik proves it.

Tammy in 2 sets 6-3, 6-3.

i pick tammy in qf since the beginning of the tournament :)

Yey!!! It'll be tonite!! So exciting!!
In Japan, it starts at 21:00 or 0:20 on NHK!!

Can't wait!!

Show us a good match, both girls!!

Jun 28th, 2004, 07:05 AM
I would normally pick Tammy but I think the long doubles match would have took a lot out of her, and she needs to be 100% to take out an in form Ai. So I pick Ai in a close match, but I really hope Tammy can win!
