Daniilidou Thunders Past Raymond in First Round Match

The thunder you may have heard coming from Stadium Court at the Acura Classic on Monday night was not an approaching storm, but rather the powerful shot making displayed by Eleni Daniilidou of Greece.

In the first match of the night session, Eleni Daniilidou used her power to break open a close match and eliminate American Lisa Raymond, 7-5, 6-0, in a first round meeting on Stadium Court.

After overcoming a 5-3 deficit and fighting off a set point, Daniilidou took a 6-5 lead and went on to serve out the set in impressive fashion. She blew a 114-mph serve past Raymond’s outstretched racquet at 40-15 to win the first set.

Daniilidou proceeded to go on a tear as she slammed repeated winners down the line and crosscourt past Raymond.

In the first game of the second set, Raymond could only throw her hands up in the air after Daniilidou stroked yet another backhand winner.

Later after she fell behind 3-0, frustration set in for Raymond as she yelled, “Nooooo!” after she sent a forehand four feet past the baseline.

Daniilidou served for the match at 5-0. At deuce she hit a service winner and on match point she executed a perfect backhand volley down the line winner, to end the match in exactly one hour.

“The first set was really close. Actually I really didn’t start very good,” Daniilidou said in describing the first set. “I wasn’t moving good. I wasn’t so focused.”

When asked about the second set, Daniilidou said, “I played very well. I was moving well and I was serving very good.”

Daniilidou and Raymond are tied 1-1 in career head-to-head meetings.
Daniilidou advances to a second round match against Russia’s Elena Bovina.
Daniilidou’s 2004 match record is now 17-15.
Daniilidou is making her third Acura Classic appearance. She reached the second round here in 2002 and 2003.
Daniilidou is ranked 38 in the world.
Raymond was playing in her 10th Acura Classic. Her best result here was in 1995 when she reached the finals where she lost to Conchita Martinez.
Raymond’s 2004 match record improves to 12-16.
Raymond reached the quarterfinals at this year’s Australian Open.
Raymond is ranked 33 in the world.
Raymond’s career record at the Acura Classic is now 10-10
