View Full Version : Any early whisperings on who the teams might be?

Jun 18th, 2004, 04:54 PM
I know we want find out till post US Open but the teams are usually confirmed by the US Open and it is about now and during the US Open lead ins that the players deide and commit to it. So has anyone heard anything? I haven't

Let's predict who we think will be the field

Australia (obviously) probably lleyton and Alicia again, but I think for Lleyton a lot depends on whether Kim plays. If Kim doesn't play then I think Lleyton might play his hometown event. If not lleyton then mark, but Alicia will play it I think
US-Blake and Lindsay; I know Serena is in with a shot but as defending champs I think the same team should get asked first.
Russia - Myskina and Safin, didn't play their best last time but Nastya is a GS champ now and Safin isn't coming off 12 months ruined by a wrist injury
Belgium- Malisse and either JHH or Kim; as JHH is now the top Belgian she will get first offer but will the organisers want to lose Kim , last year Aus-Bel was the biggest crowd ever and Kim has been a long time supporter of the event and Kim will probably want to play here to be ensured of 6 matches which she will need coming ack from surgery, so who knows but Belgium will be here regardless of which woman they select.

Slovak Republic - Daniela and Hrbaty; even though they only made the final this year cause of Kim and MOlik's innjuries I think they weill be asked back, they are popular and have won before (albeit with different players)
Croatia - Sprem and Ancic; I'd love to see this team:)
Switzerland - Federer and Casanova

Qualifying: Hungary: Mandula and Savolt; I'd like to see them invited back
and hmm does China have a male player? If so I'd say China with Zheng and a guy:p otherwise Korea with Cho and Lee.

Well Alicia Molik has already said that she will be coming back as yet Lleyton has not confirmed and i presume that is because Kim hasn't either

Tanasugarn has said yes but will only play if Srichaphan also agrees to enter

Myskina has also confirmed and just waiting on Marat or Youzhny

Daniella and Dominik have been asked just waiting to hear back from them

Serbia i dont think so sorry mate

Tanasugarn has said yes but will only play if Srichaphan also agrees to enterParadorn might play if he is invited because he is no need to defend Chennai title. (he was runner up). For Tammy !!! I'm pretty sure she will play.

I'd love to see SVK again. I thought they'd ask Kucera before Hrbaty as he was in the final last year and did well, and also won before, but i guess Hrbaty's ranking and results are better.
Hrbaty's got a tough decision to make, last year at Adelaide he said he would be back to defend his title, but he also loves to play for his country. I dont know what i'd like him to do, Hopman Cup is great, but he'll lose points for not defending Adelaide.

I'd also like to see more Asian teams, there werent enough this year. Thailand are always fun, if not then I'd like to see China. They dont have any good male players, but Hungary and Uzbekistan dont either and that didnt stop them.

ozfan44
Jul 9th, 2004, 08:08 AM
Luczak is very Unlikely Azza

Still waiting on Hrbaty to commit the reason he was chosen over Karol is because of his results and rankings this year so far where as Karol has been pretty quiet.

China maybe ill have to find out about that, but i dont think they have a male player of this level dunno i'll check that one!

Sorry before i said Myskina had confirmed however my mistake Myskina has asked to play but undecided between her and Sharapova

They have asked Kim first, trying to get Kim so that lleyton will play here again is the reason and have asked Xavier havent heard back from either of them yet

Fantastic

Tough one for RUSSIA - The French Open champion (Myskina) or the Wimbledon champion (Sharapova)? In marketing terms, Sharapova will probably be the bigger drawcard, but in fairness, Myskina is Russia's best, potentially the next World No. 1 player and holds a good H2H record against Sharapova. Undeniably, both deserve to play here, but only one of them can be invited.

Fantastic

Team USA - Nothing against him but I'm bored with James Blake - he's very one-note and not as exciting as Paul MacNamee would like us to believe. If Lindsay Davenport retires at the end of the year, I'd like to see Jennifer Capriati take her spot. I'd like to see Jennifer team up with Andy Roddick. And then I'd like to see Ted Watts at his unprofessional worst umpire their mixed doubles matches. That'd be a scream - possibly quite literally!

Roddick apparently is asking for huge appearance fees
Mardy Fish and James Blake are other 2 contenders
latest whispers im hearing is that perhaps gasquet/mauresmo (golovin 2nd choice)

they would like a chinese team but no male with a suitable ranking for this event as yet so unlikely is the word

Federer most probably and Casanova,

Myriam seems to love playing Events such as these, and if Patty is going to be commited to the Goldcoast it is a Roger And Myriam pairing, thats if they want to play, because only one Swiss Team member was interested last year. and that was Roger.

A new Dutch team can't be far off. Netherlands hasn't played since 1997. Out of the men, they could choose from Sjeng Schalken, Martin Verkerk and Raemon Sluiter. Out of the women, they'd have to look all the way down the list to Elise Tamaela and perhaps even Michaella Krajicek. The Hopman Cup has been known to uncover new talent, so perhaps Tamaela and Krajicek aren't such long shots.

Jul 19th, 2004, 06:24 PM
Israel or Holland, that would be good! but havent been mentioned last i heard a Schalken/Krajicek pairing i reckon would do alright!

Don't like the chances of a swiss team as Patty has already said she plans to play GoldCoast in 2005 so they will be speaking to Myriam at Us Open

Clijsters apparently said she will play, but nothing in writing as yet!

Fantastic
Jul 19th, 2004, 06:56 PM
Poor Roger, he wants to come back but can't find a woman to play with. Maybe he's a jinx and the Swiss girls know it. Every woman he's ever played with in the event is now too severely injured to play ever again. If they want new talent, they could try Timea Bacsinszky. But then, he wouldn't want to jinx such a young girl.

Coetzer and Ferreira even tho mandas retired. Amanda loved playing in Perth as it was only a hop, skip and a jump away from South Africa, and she liked the support the expat South Africans gave her. She has asked to play this tournament every year since they last played but Wayne kept refusing because he wanted to spend more time with his family, which was understandable, so she couldn't. It wasn't that South Africa were never invited back, it was that Wayne had other priorities in his life. Sad for Amanda though. Shame there weren't any other highly-ranked South African men for her to partner here. She was definitely a crowd favourite.

Still no word on if they will invite Maria or Anastasia, i hope its Anastasia, she's one of my faves!, Marat will confirm in next few weeks!

organisers are still hopeful that Kim will play, but she has also been approached to play at an exhibition event in hong kong, come on kimmie perth is way better!

It will be ineresting to see how Lleyton goes at the Aussie Open now.

Fantastic
Aug 12th, 2004, 03:49 PM
Lleyton has never really had a real affinity with Perth, even though he did win the WA Open here back in 1998. Mark is a former HC champion and he seems to know how to work up the crowd better. With Lleyton, we never really got to see or hear his "C'mon!" personality and he never really had the crowd on tenterhooks apart from that match with Alicia against Jiri Novak and Daja Bedanova two years ago. Sometimes I think his participation in Perth was just to spite the Adelaide crowd for the bad reception they gave him against Dejan Petrovic. I love watching Lleyton play, so I'd rather he played in Perth than Adelaide. But maybe he wants to be closer to home just after New Years.

Fantastic
Aug 12th, 2004, 03:53 PM
Kim played in the Hopman Cup a year before Lleyton did, so I hope her decision to play for Belgium next year will be independent to her boyfriends' participation. If she doesn't want to play, then at least it paves the way for another nation to contest the event.

Fantastic
Aug 30th, 2004, 02:27 PM
There's always a chance Serena could play if Lindsay isn't making the trip Down Under next year. Serena hasn't had her chance to "defend the title" yet. It looks like James Blake may not be able to make it with his injury. I think he's boring anyway. I'd like to see Mardy Fish have a crack. It would be nice to watch an Olympic Silver medallist in action. And I hear the MTF guys think he looks like a 70s porn star. That wouldn't hurt the eyes either, I suppose. Lol. Or there's always Jennifer Capriati if Serena can't make it. I wouldn't mind seeing her return a favour to Paul McNamee for skipping out on him way back in 1994, when she was to have partnered John McEnroe.

Has anyone noticed that whenever Lindsay Davenport plays here, she ends up having a good year? The only exception was 1995 when she fell to No. 12 after having been in the Top 10 for a majority of the season. However, after playing HC in 1996, Lindsay went on to win an Olympic Gold medal. After competing in 1999, she went on to win Wimbledon. Having played HC again in 2004, she's having a very good season and could very well cap it off with a US Open win. It's been something of a good luck charm for her.

Let's hope Patty feels patriotic enough and honoured to be asked to play alongside a great player like Roger rather than play Gold Coast this year - it's a fine tournament, but how often will she ever share the court with Roger? If Marat Safin comes back, I'll go, but if not, I'll save my money this year. Usually, I go every year whether I like the players or not because I just want to see some good live tennis, but I'm being a bit more selective this time. The ticket prices have gone up a few dollars again. The cost for a good ticket is almost $30 more expensive than the first time I bought them. Nothing against the price of the tickets - they are cheap compared to most other functions - but I just don't have enough extra cash to throw around this time. I hate paying bills and shit. i am cautiously optimistic that this is finally going to be the year that Patty and Roger play the Hopman Cup together. The reason i think this is that Patty has gotten a lot less shy in the past couple of years and now she actually seems as though she wants to be in the spotlight, whereas before she would always prefer to go to Gold Coast and have a relaxed week.

Another clue is that this year for the first time in her career, Patty played mixed doubles (at Wimby and the USO) - i think she might have had a longstanding thing about playing mixed, but she has gotten over it.

Yet another reason is that the Hopman Cup desperately wants Roger, and i'm sure they are going way out of their way to entice him to come.

The only obstacle might be if Patty and Miroslava Vavrinec don't get along, and therefore Vavrinec doesn't want Roger to play with Patty. I know that Patty has had some problems with Mikaelian and Gagliardi, not sure about Vavrinec though.

I will ask her about Hopman Cup if I meet her again.

i have similar feelings vogus.

i think patty and mirka played doubles a couple of times amd they played fed cup. patty normally gets along with the majority of people despite her public feuds.

I wouldn't say it was relaxed for her, she has usually been one of the higher ranked players there and gets a fair bit of media attention in the local media.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Monica Seles back playing here next year. Serena Williams (2003 defending champion) or Lindsay Davenport (2004 replacement/defending champion) are the only other possibilities. The others (Jen and Venus) seem to have other commitments. After those girls, we'd have to go all the way down to Chanda Rubin, Lisa Raymond and Meghann Shaughnessy. Rubin is a former champ. Lisa is okay, Meghann is okay, but they are hardly exciting names IMO.

Mardy Fish, Robby Ginepri, Taylor Dent and James Blake (defending champion) are the most likely to fill the male singles spot. I can't see Andre Agassi or Andy Roddick stepping in at the moment, although I would love to see Andy play here. Jan-Michael Gambill is an outside chance. I think Vincent Spadea is committed to Adelaide.

The tagline this year is "The Battle Of The Dome". It sounds like they are anticipating a pretty stellar field.

Stosur has a bucket load of points to defend on the gold coast anyway.

I don't reckon Australia has that great a shot at the cup, they aren't going to be that strong on the mens side whoever it is, Mark isn't in great form, Wayne would probably be the best choice cause he is ok for singles and good for doubles.

Gowza
Oct 1st, 2004, 07:31 AM
todd reid really needs to pick himself up and come through, australia really needs him at the top or at least near the top of the mens game. i reckon wayne might be picked, personally i would go for reid for the experience because even with wayne we dont have much of a shot i dont think. alicia should do well tho.

Thanks for the news Jiro:) shame for the Hopman Roger isn't going

I'd go for Wayne, I think if he serves well Australia could take out the mixed and if Alicia can come through in her matches that is the tie won. I don't see Todd being great in the mixed, I think Wayne would make Australia a lot stronger than Todd would.

Cool! Russia is playing. I will be off stalking Marat then. :D

Not to ignore Anastasia... because she will be stalking ME! ;)

HC will most likely ask Mark Philippoussis to play for Oz, even if he isn't in very good form. It's all about Stars at this tournament - past, present and future stars - and Mark fits the bill to a tea. Who knows? He might bring Delta to the NYE ball. ;)
Whether or not Mark accepts the invitation is another matter. :(

If not, I wouldn't mind seeing Wayne Arthurs or Todd Reid take his place.

Who else is playing besides Australia, Slovak Republic and Russia? Will USA defend their title? Their top women are either injured or disinterested. It could get ugly if Lindsay and Serena decline an invite. Jennifer and Venus will most likely play the exhibition tournament elsewhere. That leaves Chanda, Amy, Jill, Laura and Ashley.

so you all now know that im not bullshitting as i told you this weeks ago!

STILL waiting for philippoussis to committ and from the way my mate was talking Paul McNamee is really starting to get pissed off that he won't hurry up and make his choice!

Thailand was a team mentioned to me (jiro you may be able to get some more info on this from the players) hopman is keep for paradorn and tammy to play

jen and venus are both going to that asian exhibition event i have been told but they are still hoping that serena will play lindsay is second choice! 90% sure that roddick will not be here agassi has said no (just like every other year!) mardy fish next in line!

belgium is now looking doubtful as kim has indicated she would prefer to have a week off and just play sydney before the aussie open

latest talk is of a possible golovin/gasquet team but i suspect that is just a dream

I was just about to come in here and post about Tatiana Golovin and Richard Gasquet possibly playing for France. How coincidental was that? Hehe.

What are the chances of Amelie Mauresmo saying no to Hopman Cup? What are the chances of Sebastien Grosjean or Fabrice Santoro saying no?

I would love for Tatiana and Richard to come. It would be interesting to see how Richard conducts himself in front of all these kids who will no doubt pester him.

The worst incident of pesty behaviour that I can remember (but it was funny) was a bunch of kids (maybe aged 12-15) harrassing Kim Clijsters on the practise courts for things. First they asked for a wave, then a smile, then a ball, then a towel. Kim was talking to Elena Likhovtseva and never looked at them once. She looked really pissed that they would even talk to her. Finally some smart-arse kid goes, "Kim, give us your bra!" I almost choked on my sandwich when I heard that. LOL.

I've heard that Gasquet can be rather temperamental when he is annoyed by fans. I'd love for him to bitchslap one of those kids. But any sign of bratty behaviour from him and I can almost guarantee some lame "dickhead" joke.

well hopefully mark can will have a drastic turn around in form before then, or we can just hope he forgets about this season and starts next season well. alicia, she's been here a few times before and will be comfortable with the indoors and the format etc, her scoreline against davenport the other day was terrible so she will have to pick up some form as well. but this event is ages away so no reason to worry now. i hope golovin/gasquet play.

i just think it would be more roger not wanting to change a successful formula from last year than him not wanting to play with patty. of course it is possible but it's also complete speculation. i'm not saying patty's attitudes are always justified but if you look at the people she has had problems with it is usually a player who has a bit of reputation for something other than being nice. patty does seem to be very friendly towards the majority of girls on tour. i can't really see roger having major issues with anyone and i do know that patty and mirka played doubles together on occasion and never had any publicised problems. it's a pretty big commitment coming to australia a week early and considering they are away for so much of the year i know i would certainly like to spend more time at home.
