View Full Version : Can Lindsay win Wimbledon?

Jun 9th, 2004, 08:11 PM
First of all let me say that my main interest in Women's Tennis is for betting purposes but I always end up having a bet on Lindsay despite the fact she has lost me more than she has won me! The recent French Open was typical, a focused Lindsay Davenport would have won ( injury permitting ) but she seems to struggle to keep concentration throughout tournaments these days.
She has been a professional for 12 years now, I think, and obviously this has taken a toll on her body. She is stuck between a rock and a hard place if she trains hard and plays hard her body gives up, if she doesn't train hard and play hard she will not be competitive, I think she probably knows this and rightfully focused on Wimbledon and the USA Open. She will carry my money in both again so hopefully she can peak for these two and win at least one.

She could, but can she not lose focus during the tournament? Will her knee be ok? Can she get over playing Venus and Serena?

if you take out serena and venus then hell yeah, its her tournie ;)

Venus and Serena have been playing like shit. The only reason she would lose to them is if she is either injured or having one of her mental freak outs. There is no reason she could not win it if she is healthy, all she has to do is actually think she can win it and not be such a bitch. :p

LD will need the sisters to be knocked off to win Wimbledon. Justine and Kim are out of the way which will help her. If she faces either sisters she'll probably be put out. Then if she beats one she'll probably have to face another.

Congratulations to Andrew that's the first time I have seen Lindsay and bitch
mentioned in the same sentence! Bit of street cred for Miss Davenport I think.
More seriously, on the responses so far I agree with Andrew although the Williams sisters are favourites neither is playing that good. However they are playing and can only improve, Lindsay's preparation looks bizarre and I don't see how she can possibly be match fit for a two week tournament. She seems
extremely reluctant to travel away from the States these days and this may affect her motivation. Maybe the USA OPen is a more realistic target with a few more tournaments under her belt.

When she won Wimbledon in 99 she didn't play any warm up event, she just practiced on her neighbour's grass court.

Nikki, thanks for that info maybe she plays better when rested so thats quite encouraging. I seem to recall Bjorn Borg ( yes I'm that old ) used to do similar. Played Paris and then straight to private practice for Wimbledon.

the first questions are whether Lindsay will play Wimbledon or not, and if she plays in which form she'll be. If she plays and her form is good (like Tokyo or Amelia Island 2004), then she can win Wimbledon. Otherwise she can lose also in first round to a newcomer.
So we have to hope that her knee is ok and that she was able to practise full-time.

the questions is, will injuries still bother her?

hi! i'm new here. i'm french, from paris. I think Lindsay is a serius menace to Serena and Venus.
I think my little giant will win Wimby once again this year. She'll be on fire, you'll see.
Good luck!

If Lindsay is fit and focussed and the knee does stay ok there is no reason why she should not have a good chance to win Wimbledon this year. Have not heard how the knee is, has anyone got an update please?

In a word. NO.

Jun 16th, 2004, 07:15 PM
Doby, NO is an answer but why not? For years I have thought a fit, confident and positive Lindsay Davenport would dominate the women's game. Most of the time she is her own worst enemy. Believe Lindsay, believe. It can happen.

Her problem is that she is a mental freak. And with that comes bad results. End.

yes she can! and i think she will! (i believe in our goddess :worship:  )

Yeah!!!!I think that she's got a great chance, but don't worry about her knee, I'm pretty sure that it's ok, she doesn't withdraw (yet?) from Wimbledon, she didn't say that she'll withdraw so let's be positive about her chance at Wimbledon, ok!!!!! When she won it in 1999, no one thaught she would have won, so let's hope again!!!!I agree with you Elske!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just had a look at the latest odds for the Womens singles and Lindsay is the 6th favourite at around 20/1. The Williams sisters, Mauresmo, Myskina, Capriati and Sharapova are all more favoured. It looks very open this year as no one is playing outstandingly well and it could come down to who wants it the most. Thanks for everyone's comments, they have helped and as usual I am going to put 50 on Lindsay which would win me 1000 and my wife a very nice holiday! So come on Lindsay get my wife ( and me ) to a beach for two weeks.

6-2 6-1 :yeah:

Good job Lindsay, let's continue like that until the final!!!!!!!!!

I like the way she's started the tournament and she seems very possitive!

If she keeps this up, I think Lindsay could win. Her only nemisis in her half is Venus. Lindsay just needs to beleive she can beat her and bring her best form!

Go Lindsay!!! :bounce:

Jun 26th, 2004, 10:16 PM
Well her nemesis has gone but I am more concerned over Maria Sharapova, she won't half give Lindsay a match. Vera will be tough but Linds should come through that one. I still believe Lindsay can get to the final, and if she does has as much chance of winning as her opponet, whoever she may be :)
