View Full Version : My day at the DFS Classic (Qualifying Round1)

Jun 5th, 2004, 07:59 PM
I'm no good at reports but I'm going to try my hardest :)

First of all was the Amanda Janes/Sam Stosur and Mel South/Maria Kirilenko matches. Melanie played a fantastic first set with both players running about all over the place with some good rallies coming over it, a complete turn around from Mel's performance at Surbiton (It must just have been a poor day ;))She played really well from what I could see matching Kirilenko shot for shot until at 5-5 (or 6-5) Melanie was unlucky to lose her serve and the set :bigcry: And still playing quite well in the second set just wasn;t winning the crucial points, which is a shame, but :yeah: to Melanie who played really well, just her opponent was too good :(.
Amanda Janes  This was another close match, especially on Stosurs serve. In the first set Amanda would serve come to the net straight away and get passed, and this didn't change throughout the first set. In the second it was very close and going into 4-4 Amanda managed to break Sam's serve  and served out the set. After the first set it seems AJ had learned to stay back at the baseline for a while until coming to the net and it work. She had loads of opportunities top break Stosur's serve, but Sam's strong serve helped her out when faced with break points againt her :(. Also, Amanda seemed to think she was Tim Henman but her volleys just went to far wide when it seemed she was going to win the point! :( At the beginning of the final set, Amanda was broken in the first game and then it went with serve for the rest of the match, she did have chances later on in that set, but again, Stosur's serve came to the rescue. Afterwards I saw AJ walking round, and she had a face like a smacked backside, and I'm sure she knew she had a great chance to win a match but she didn't take it!!!
Meanwhile going on on Court 2, was the Tatarkova/Arvidsson match! How did Elena lose it?!?!?!? It was quite obvious she was far superior on grass, and Sofia was just  and this told after Tatarkova won teh first set 6-2, and very deservedly! But, the unforced errors crept into Tatarkova's game and Arvidsson baseline play took advantage. What I disliked about Arvidsson, was her lack of effort to run to the net, which is wht Tatarkova, with the help of many dropshots won the first set, purely because Sofia would not run to the net, even if she could have reached it. After the first set, Elena became irritated with herself, and Sofia just outhit her, and consequently won the match.
Following the Janes/Stosur match was MJS & Bethanie Mattek. And in the first set Mervana was the drop shot queen :o not! She has a good forehand but what looked like easy drop shots landed in the net and she threw her racket on the floor after each chance missed. After some poor shots from Mervana, Bethanie was able to break Salkic's serve and win the sey 6-2. At the end of the first set, Mervana received a medical timeout, for a knee injury, and came back onto to the court with strapping going round her waist and thigh and then after the first game had some more strapping put on. At many points during that set I was sure she would withdraw as she kept limping aswell as throw her racket on the floor after a poor shot. Amazingly, if this topsy turvy match, the set went to a tiebreak, which Mervana easily won 7-1 :D and it seemed the match had been turned around in Mervana's favour. But, during the third set, Mervana lost her serve, and Mattek found herself in a position to serve out for the match - which of course, she failed to do. After this it was Mattek's turn for an injury time out - the reason, a back injury! After this, the momentum was back with Mervana, who, during the 2nd set had began to learn how to do a dropshot. And after each poor shot, or opportunity missed, she would slam her racket on the floor and talk to herself! After the timeout, MJS began to take control of the match and was able to win it 26 76 75 :D
Mervana's opponent in the next round will be Kelly McCain, who seemed to be way out of her depth against Tian Tian Sun, and soon found herself 5-0 down in the first set, after some great winners and returns from Sun, but then, I have no idea what happened, but Tian Tian lost the set 7-5, and she started seeing her shots that used to go in, now go out :o and she, like Salkic, began to bang her racket on the floor and talk to herself! I wasn't paying great attention to this match, just that Sun seemed to fall to pieces and McCain took advantage and won, 75 64.
At the same time over on Court 3 was the Perebiynis/Webley-Smith match. Didn;t see much of this match, but Emily was playing well after the first set, but in the end, Perebiynis' WTA experience told as she won the decider 6-2 :bigcry:
3rd match on Court 1 was the Jidkova/Tu match. In the first set, Alina was hitting errors all over the court and Meilen was playing really well, and should have won the set until Alina realised she could play better and fought it out ;) Unfortuantely for Meilen, Alina greatly improved in the 2nd set and she was outplayed and ost the match. Another draw for Meilen and she won have won, shame she had to best the top seed.
Stevenson vs. Spears was a good match. Alexandra played well, only Abigail played better! It was an extremely close set, with a break of serve each early on. Shame for Alexandra, like Meilen, had she had a different draw she could have won a match. Good play and persistant from Spears.
The last match on court 2, was Roberta Vinci vs. British wildcard Karen Paterson - in a match I thought would be over in no time ;) Karen fought hard and most games were pretty close, and she really did have a good opportunuty to do well. Unfortunately for Karen, Vinci is a lot more experienced and this showed :bigcry: Karen's serve was great, when it went in, and if she had got more first serves it, maybe she could have done a bit more in that set. The serve is good, as is the forehand, but again, she could have won more points if she'd have just hit it back into play and not unnecessarily whacked the ball long. And Karen knew that she could have done better, shouting at herself "Come on Karen" and laughing when she hit a crazy shot, as she knew it was poor, and eventually lost 6-3 6-1 :( :bigcry: It was closer than the score suggests!

All the Brits played really well today and maybe with nicer draws or better shot selection on crucial points could have won/made the score closer in their matches.

Not a very detailed report but I tried my best ;)

Good Luck to;
Mervana J-S (hope the injury is OK), Alina Jidkova (sorry Abi) and Yulia B tomorrow!

Karen played pretty much how i imagined she did from teh stats. Her first serve is huge when it goes in.

karen is so streaky coz she goes for every shot, and when it works she's fine and can beat alot of teh players out there, but if she is missing them (as seh seemed to today) she just goes nowhere.

but thikn this was a good experience and didn't do herself to badly, shame she could of won a couple of more service games, as when she was holding she was holding easily, and was getting close to roby's serve.

Alina :)
Amanda :fiery:

Thanks Peter, good report!

Karen does have a huge serve  and she can use it well, but it is just so inconsistent. She could do so much better for herself with a bit of confidence and a bit more consistency. :)

Karen is a great personality on court though, don't you think!? ;)

Did u see some players practicing?I saw quite a few players practising. I saw, Serna, Loit, Dokic, Sharapova, Loit, Callens, Paterson, a Japanese group of players (don't know who they all were), Asagoe & Kremer. But didn't take much notice of the practising, I prefered to watch the matches.

I think Karen was hitting with Loit when i saw her, before that Loit was hitting with Serna. Callens & the Japanese were hitting with each other. Serna also hit with Dokic.
