:bounce: ~ 2004 PAW Interviews (By Tournament) ~ :bounce:

A new feature of the PAW Tour in 2004 will be the conducting of interviews for the winner and runner-up, along with one other"outstanding performer" from each tournament.

I will interview these players from Roland Garros 2004 onwards by pm and post them in this thread.

Enjoy :wavey: :hatoff:

:worship: Interview with Roland Garros CHAMPION - crazillo (GER) :worship:

Congratulations crazillo, on an unbelievable victory…

crazillo: Thank you very much mate. It is a great achievement and I feel great now.

So how does it feel?

crazillo: OMG, it is some kind of satisfaction. You know, I had some serious problems in the last week, arguments, problems with the League Table in Strassbourg; I even was in the hospital, I had a concussion etc. etc. This victory gives me back some lost confidence which I needed so badly.

Are there any people you would like to thank, fellow players or family?

crazillo: I want to thank some very special people. Most are part of the "Lockerroom" or "Friendship" thread; so thank you to Valentinas, Andys, Luis, Aidan (yes, I mean u Spikey), Peter Pan, Alex, Nir and shorty. I also would like to thank some good mates who are travelling da PAW circuit: CD(poulin), matthias, S-T-E-V-E, Carsten and some more. You are all very special friends to me! :D You believed in me as I didnt do it myself. :wavey:
But a big  goes to my dog and my rabbit who are my biggest fans. My family always supported me as well, I called my sister and mother every day. thank you Alex and Mum. Thanks god I got enough prize money to pay the telephone calculation.

No one expected you to perform well, you were not in particularly excellent form heading in, only in the minor tournaments, what spurred the belief that you could win at such a high level?

crazillo: I always think that those big events have surprising results because a lot of things can happen when 128 players face each other - so surprises are no rare thing!
Personally, I knew some favourites were injured so I believed in myself with the help of my friends/family that I mentioned above.
My "minor tournament results" were very good indeed. I played them to improve my ranking and I kinda liked the atmosphere in Estoril and Budapest, where I was able to finish 3rd each time.

Do you find it interesting that the last 4 players to win Grand Slam titles have been ranked outside the top 100, does this show the depth of the PAW Tour?

crazillo: Yeah, definitely Aidys. :)
I cant add much - just that there are a lot of "newbies" arriving on the tour and they dont show any respect. They are dangerous and I think I am/was one of those "darkhorses."

Interestingly you only went 12-14 (win-loss in picks) throughout the tournament, but you made some vital picks, including belief in the Germans and that “Garbin over Henin-Hardenne pick,” hardly anyone picked it, did you have confidence in Garbin?

crazillo: Yes, I believed in Garbin. I always thought she is a player with an incredible touch. I have watched her several times, for example in a thrilling match against Ai Sugiyama last season (in Philadelphia). She can play incredible well and she just had to make a breakthrough aganist a top player - Henin-Hardenne was the perfect opponent she could get because she was certainly not at her best.
I believed in Anca Barna, but she lost to my BIGGGGGGGG fave Maggie Maleeva. I hate to pick against her, but Maggie clearly surprised me in this tournament.
I always try to balance out my "risk picks" and my "safe picks" - I think I did it quite well in this tournament.

Does this victory give you and the German team confidence.. in the upcoming QF versus Australia?

crazillo: Oh, i dont know. In the German PAW-Thread, all my compatriots were praying I could close it out. You know, no German player won a PAW SINGLES TITLE before I won Miami doubles, but thats something different) and it was an incredible thing that our first victory happened at a Grand Slam.
Me was told by matthias that I would be the best German player right now because my Ranking will jump. I dont think I am the "leader" or something like that because we are a good team, I was respected as the Number 3, I will be respected as the Number 1. We dont make big differences because everyone has to show a good achievement for the team. But a win at a Grand Slam is never bad for someone´s confidence so you might have to change the odd´s Aidys. :)

World No 1 and 2 – SpikeyAidanm and sandg didn’t have the best of tournaments, do you have any advice to give them?

crazillo: OMG, they are PAW legends and I would never dare to give them any advice because I have to admire them.
But I gave you an advice that paid off Spikey. Maybe I should become a psychologist, but not for PAW; I think I will stay with human beings
Just do whatever you think is the best. Take a break (I told you Aidys), but the rest secret of being a succesful PAW pro is a question of confidence and a bit of luck. :) GOOOOOOOOO PAW LEGENDS!

You are likely to move inside the top 30 with this triumph, what are your further goals for this season, I’m sure you have over achieved what you expected?

crazillo: As I became a PAW pro, I set some goals:
1. I wanted to win a tournament this season.
2. I wanted to be Top-60 at the end of the season.
3. I wanted to be well-respected by others for my
modesty and selflessity (Andys knows about what
I am talking) :P
4. I wanted to be the best german PAW-pro at the end of the year

Now I already arrived my season goals. I want to proove my results with some good perofrmances on my favouirte surfaces Grass and Indoors. I want to win one more tournament and become a Top-20-Player. But hey, thats the future so you never know what is going to happen. :)

Congratulations Sascha, enjoy this sensational victory.

crazillo: Thank you very much Aidan. I am really happy and I hope the other PAW players got to know a bit about me. :) Sorry for my English (it really sucks although others keep saying it is fine). Thank you very much and I hope to see you well-prerpared for the Grass-season; my favourite surface apart from Indoors BTW. I hope to proove my good achievements and I just wanna give a big  to everyone who took the time to read this interview. :)

Interview with Roland Garros Runner-up - spencercarlos (VEN)

Wow, spencercarlos, a runner-up (No 2) at the French Open, how does it feel?

spencercarlos: It`s really amazing, i don`t think i had such a strong event, in fact i missed a huge chance if i had picked on Garbin, i usually pick on th juicy points, anyway i feel so happy, great achievement for me, first time ever i get to a latter round in a major.

Why did it take so long to solve the Grand Slam riddle, what turned it around for you, this tournament?

spencercarlos: Well as i said before i tried to pick smarter this time, anyway the event had so many upsets, i lost the last couple of picks in three set matches and you know, it`s a shame i could not win, i was close, but it`s ok have to congrat Crazillo who did a great job as well. I hope i can perform like this on the next slams.

What was the most pivotal pick you did this tournament?

spencercarlos: Peshke over Birnerova, or Ruano over Siguyama, both were juicy  , i think both played a huge part on this.. as i said this was not my best effort i think i could have picked a little better, but overall the result was great.. greater than i expected.

You slipped a bit down the rankings after Miami, you will climb up once again, you always seem to have a good tourney here and there.

spencercarlos: Yes, i am kind of a streaky player, it seems once i see my ranking going down i suddenly have a great event, its rare, i would love to be more consistent.

Are you motivated for the grass court season?

spencercarlos: Yes i am, i really want to be playing wimbledon :p, lets see what happens there i hope to do well and who knows try to conving myselft now with this result that i can perform better at the slams..

Thanks spencercarlos and good luck for the rest of the year.

spencercarlos: Thanks to you, good luck to you as well :worship:

:yeah: Interview with Roland Garros RISER - thekimfan (BEL) :yeah:

Thekimfan, this is only your second PAW Tournament, what an outstanding finish.

thekimfan: Thank you so much! I'm sorry, I'm a bit nervous cause this is my first interview... :help:

So how do you feel?

thekimfan: I was surprised as I hoped to finish TOP-50, I never dared to dream of finishing 21st. I want to say congratulations to everyone who finished above me (and of course all others to ;) ), and especially crazillo who did it just so great! :yeah:

I believe you are from Belgium?

thekimfan: Indeed, and I'm very proud of being belgian!

Belgium has emerged to be a real powerhouse nation this year in
PAW, are you happy to be amongst the group?

thekimfan: I'm very pleased to be among them and I hope Belgium will perform well this year...

What do you think of PAW as a game?

thekimfan: :yeah:
I'm very happy that I've started committing, because it's just such a great game and we're all enjoying it! I also wish to thanks (in name of everybody I think) all people who work so hard to realise this game! I can believe it takes a lot of your time, but it's worth it...

What are your goals for the rest of 2004 PAW-wise?

thekimfan: Just do my best, and enjoying it as much as I can! :D

Do you have any friends on the PAW tour at the moment?

thekimfan: As I've just started, I don't know most posters, though they all seem to be very friendly. I only know kimclijsters4ever very good, who lives in the same city as I do. :wavey: (and where I also can post some of my posts, a very big thank you for that!)

You are going to be rewarded around $US 40,000 for you third round achievement this week, is this a big help for the travel expenses?

thekimfan: Well, it surely will help me to get out of most of the costs, though I still have to rent a room in a cheap hotel, maybe after Wimbledon I can sleep a bit more classy...

Congratulations again, thekimfan, enjoy this moment.

thekimfan: I surely do, good luck to everyone this year!

 Interview with Birmingham joint-CHAMPION - canuckfan (CAN)

canuckfan, how does it feel to win your second title?

canuckfan: It feels great. I had a hard time earlier this year but now it's getting better and better.

You had an amazing first two tournaments last year, you seem to be making the transition up the PAW rankings quite nicely, what has been the key to your success?

canuckfan: Chance plays a big part in PAW. But I would say that following less-known players (who play juniors or challengers) helps a lot when it's time to pick big upsets.

What was the most vital PAW pick you did this week?

canuckfan: Anne Kremer gave me 61 points this week but almost everybody picked her. Without a Sharapova/Golovin joint win on saturday, I would probably have finished in 11th place. And Golovin came back from being 0-3 down in the 3rd set. So Golovin over Loit was probably my most vital succesful pick this week.

How does it feel to share the title with Nexeo?

canuckfan: I'm very happy! I want to congratulate him and to wish him success in the coming weeks!

Do you feel more confident for Wimbledon now?

canuckfan: Well I sucked in my first two grand slams so I will probably have to change my strategy. But a title on grass is a good confidence booster for sure!

Thank you for your time canuckfan and good luck for the reason of the season.

canuckfan: It's been a pleasure. I hope it's the first of many titles because I want to qualify for the year-end championship. I want to thanks Nir for managing this tournament. Thanks to Sandg for always posting the scoring points in record time. And finally thanks to Spikey for managing this great game :clap2:

Interview with Co-Birmingham Winner - Nexeo (BAH)

Nexeo, wow, I believe this is your first tournament correct?

Nexeo:It is actually my second tournament. I played Roland Garros as well.

How does it feel to be a PAW tournament winner so early?

Nexeo:It feels terrific, however, it is a lower-tier tournament... I have my eyes set on Wimbledon.

You had to wait a few months before you could become a pro, did the waiting pay off?

Nexeo:It really had nothing to do with my winning Birmingham.

What do you think of PAW as a game?

Nexeo:It is a very amusing and exciting game.

You are from the Bahamas, first ever PAW player from that country, I guess you will be a role model for others there?

Nexeo:I highly doubt that! LOL.

Cheers Nexeo, thank you for your time and good luck for the rest of 2004 and beyond.

Nexeo:Why thank you, it was my pleasure.

End of Interview.

Jun 13th, 2004, 12:53 PM
Interview with Birmingham riser - matthias (GER)

This is your fifth PAW top 10 finish for the year, how does it feel?

matthias: it feels good, specially to be top10 in such a big tournament. sure, it was "just" a Tier3 tournament but with more then 100 players. and so it is a really great result for me, and i´m really happy about

You gained an early lead by using up all your picks after the second round, is this a new tactic you are experimenting with?

matthias: not really, i just saw there are few points to earn, and i thought i have to take this chance. sure i had one or two stupid picks like Black over Loit. but i think it was a good decision.

Probably two of your most important picks were “Vinci over Kirilenko” and “Vinci over Dechy.” You were quite lucky with the second one?

matthias: yes, it was very lucky with Vinci over Dechy, but i was sure Vinci will have a lot confidence. because she won 3 matches in qualifiyng and beat Kirilenko, thats why i was really sure she can win this. and we all know luck is a important fact of the game

How is PAW growing in Germany, crazillo's French Open triumph must have inspired some youngsters there?

matthias: crazillo´s perfromence at Roland Garros was just amazing. i never thought a german player can win a GrandSlam Torunament yet. but he showed us, and not just us german player that everyone will get the chance to win a tournament and maybe a GrandSlam. and this is the most important message from him win. for all of us.

This is your second semi-final of the year, is your next goal – to win a tournament?

matthias: sure, i think everyone who is playing PAW want to win a Title, but you need to realistically. and i know to be top5 out of more then 100 players is a great achievement.

You adapted to grass really well this week in Birmingham, does this make you more confidence for the Fed Cup QF vs Australia, that is held on grass?

matthias: sure it is good for my confidence, specially after some bad results in the past few weeks
but i think the surface will not be so important for FED-Cup against Australia. Australia is the big Favorit, but we will give our best and will give a great fight, and maybe we can surprise again

Congrats on your performance this week matthias and good luck in the future.

matthias: thanks, and to all the people who spend so much time on this great Game , thank you

End of Interview.

Nexeo's and matthias' interviews have also been posted :)

Jun 20th, 2004, 12:53 AM
Interview with Champion of Eastbourne - Frooty_Bazooty (IRE)

I think Eastbourne has given birth to a new star, congratulations Frooty_Bazooty.

Frooty_Bazooty: Thanks! But a small PAWtion of credit has to go to my number one bitch, Dani :hearts: (sorry about the terrible pun)

You had the crowd on your side the whole week until you faced the legendary WTA Handicapper in the final, and you still didn’t let that put you off.

Frooty_Bazooty: Actually I was more concerned with Hantuchov. He had chosen Dani correctly against Mauresmo and I noticed he had chosen Zvonareva over Kuznetsova also . I did a bit of maths and realised that if the Vera-meister won, then i would be second behind him. so I was really happy when Sveta pulled through there.

In March, the media hyped you as the “Next Big Thing” after some comments that circulated amongst the press, you had plans to make a “Tatiana Golovin-esque debut” in Berlin. You finished in the top 16 there, and every week you seem to be getting better and better. It’s been a rollercoaster ride up hasn’t it?

Frooty_Bazooty: Yeah, I was always conscious of Tatiana Golovin and after she got to the final last week in Birmingham I realised that I had to put on my French accent and really make my move. I didnt want Tati thinking she was the only new hot piece of ass on the tour. I decided to change a few things up to be able to move out of that 8-24 region I seemed to finish in every single tournament and it worked.

After five tournaments, you already win your first title. That’s about as good as it gets, did your performance this week even surprise yourself?

Frooty_Bazooty: It did actually. I've always thought I'd eventually win a tournament but I didn't think it'd be this soon. Whenever I check the league tables, i automatically look towards the mid table area cos thats where i normally am and on thursday i couldnt find my name at all. I was about to post asking if i had been removed and then i realised i was fourth. Thats when it hit me that i had a shot. Picking Dani over Mauresmo really sealed it for me.

Hopefully my win will lead to lots of promiscuous lovin from my new-found groupies. Its all sex, drugs rock and roll from here on.

What spurred that belief in Daniela Hantuchova, you PAWed her all the way this week and she delivered. The pick over Sprem was quite a pivotal one, considering the majority picked Sprem for 8.

Frooty_Bazooty: Dani is my favourite player and I always try to PAW her whenever I can. To be honest, she's been really terrible lately so I was SO happy that she finally got her form back.

You are the lone player from Ireland as of now, however your rise should set a platform for youngsters there to rise, do you have any impressive juniors there?

Frooty_Bazooty: Nah, they're all crap. I'm the only good one :p

What are your immediate plans now, how are you traveling to Wimbledon from here?

Frooty_Bazooty: Im gonna play Wimbledon safe, try and do the same there as here. Hopefully if i keep my faith in Queen Dani, i can maybe pull through to the quarters there, that would be sex on a stick

Congratulations on your performance this week Frooty_Bazooty and good luck in Wimbledon and for the rest of the year.

Frooty_Bazooty: Thanks! and thanks to you and sandg for organising another great tournament :worship:

Interview with 'sHertogenbosch Champion - wateva (SIN)

Congratulations wateva, what a week for you.

wateva: Thanks a lot! I'm very excited and happy to add another title to my resume!

This is you second title after Shanghai, a joint title last year, which one feels better?

wateva: Both titles are very satisfying! I believe a top paw player is never complete without at least one title!

Singaporean PAW’s future continues to impress, silverwhite is part of the new brigade along with the more experienced – Je_ne_sais_qoui, Grice and yourself. What do you attribute to your country’s success?

wateva: In my country where tennis has such a limited coverage, I believe our interest in tennis spurred us know more about the players and their playing styles. We are also very united. We often meet up with each other to play tennis and discuss about paw! Hopefully, we can make an impact in Fed Cup next year!

If I’m not mistaken you had a few problems with firefly_ac in the lockeroom in past PAW tournaments, is everything fine between you two?

wateva: Nothing's wrong... He's just another paw journeyman who doesn't deserve my attention!

What was the most crucial pick you made in this tournament?

wateva: It has to be Koukalova over Medina Garrigues. I saw a lot of people posting Anabel over Klara. But I thought Anabel was more of a clay courter, and Klara had a previous win over Anabel. So, I went with my gut feeling and as I predicted, Klara won!

You are one of the most easy going players on tour, do you try and maintain a steady relationship with all?

wateva: Not really... You can only see me actively posting messages during the weekends... I'm really busy on other days, so I'll always try to catch up on weekends.

Your flight is due to Wimbledon soon I believe, are you going to tour around ‘s-Hertogenbosch or fly straight there?

wateva: Of course I'm going straight to Wimbledon! It's the most prestigious Grand Slam! I wish to get more practice on the Wimbly courts to ensure that I live up to my seeding!

Congrats wateva, a great performance.

wateva: Thanks!

Interview with 's-Hertogenbosch Runner up - saab95

Ever since your Shanghai debut last year, followed by an impressive showing in Filderstadt, you have been eyed as “the next PAW superstar,” you took a break at the end of the season and missed part of the Aussie season stretch, were you resting at this time?

saab95: I tried to make PAW more popular in Russia
http://kafelnikov.fastbb.ru/?2-0 etc.
providing of few tennis web-sites takes some time too

You are the best Russian player to come along in PAW, however there are newcomers like Gregorian and Vass22, perhaps you can play Fed Cup next year?

saab95: … In april I was few days with real Russian Fed Cup team
But I hope I can join the PAW's team next time.

Were you expecting to finish 2nd this week?

saab95: … Like webmaster of Lina K. web site I can only repeat her words
"I will play my best and have nothing heavy in my mind, just play."

Anne Kremer seems a delight for all PAWers at the moment, how do you think she will go at Wimbledon?

saab95: …I wish her good luck in the 1st Round. But I think now she isn't the dark horse and we'll get another big surprise from....
you'll see yourself

You have had success in both the “one week” – 13 picks PAW tournaments and the ones over two weeks, personally – which one do you prefer?

saab95: …to win something in your Birthday is the greatest present, you know.

You are seeded for Wimbledon, how do you see your chances at SW19?

saab95: …I think now we have few good russian players in PAW.
And any of them can make good shot here. And I'd like to get last 16 first of all.

Thanks saab95 and good luck for the rest of the year.

saab95: …Good luck all PAW's players in these two graet weeks. ;)

I'm not a PAW journeyman! I slump because of injury.. ( nah... just a mid-career crisis)
